It means that she had cancer that had spread through her body and they weren't sure where the tumor was located that started it and that she had a blood clot in the lung.  (+ info)

this showed up at age 12 or so. im now 42 and want this gone. doc's say i'm lucky, it looks good and under total cotrol.i did the manual lymph drainage wraps/massage. i'm really tired of 2 legs that are different sizes. ive had 4 kids and it still looks good. maybe i should just be happy.

You need to be more specific about what information you need.
It is unusual to have a diagnosis of cancer of an unknown primary. At a minimum there should be a histological type such as adenocarcinoma, clear cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, etc.
If it is simply cancer or carcinoma it is most likely because the only biopsy was an FNA. In this case a tissue biopsy should be obtained.
From a tissue sample special stains can be done to narrow down or determine the primary site. This is often done in addition to various scans of the body.
Every effort should be made to determine the primary site so that the doctors know how to treat it otherwise they are working in the dark. This is one of the main reasons unknown primaries generally have a poor prognosis.  (+ info)

Is your mother receiving chemotherapy? That will definitely decrease all the blood cells (Pancytopenia), including the hemoglobin and hematocrit. (H&H) The hemoglobin is the measure of the oxygen carrying capacity of the red blood cell and the hematocrit is the percentage of red blood cells in the body. These numbers decrease when the number of red blood cells decrease (as you would assume). Chemo kills the fast growing cancer cells while still decreasing the blood cells. Cancer patient's often have low white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets for which they are monitored daily. If you mom's H&H gets too low the doctor will give her a blood transfusion which is very common for people with cancer. Best of luck and hope this helps!  (+ info)

I doubt there are any.

Cancer of unknown primary origin is exact what it sounds like. They are unable to determine where in the body the cancer started. It has metastasized (spread).

Because the cancer cells were progeny of normal cells that de-differentiate their function (all cells began as stem cells, they differentiated to a specific function like heart muscles or blood, etc.) The less differentiated the cancer cells are more aggressive and the more resistant they are to treatment in general. Cancer cells usually become less and less differentiated and their variety increases with time because of genetic instability.

If breast cancer spreads to the brain, in most cases, it still has characteristics of breast tissue cells. Therefore, it is not brain cancer but, metastasis of breast cancer.

I know what I wrote is not encouraging but, hopefully, your husband can be one of the few that get a spontaneous remission.  (+ info)

unknown primary is a really poor diagnosis. Please make sure that they have run every test under the sun. Without knowing the primary it becomes very very hard to follow the protocol. I have not seen any patient with this diagnosis because we manage to figure out what the primary is. check out national cancer institute web page, www.cancer.gov under diseases section there is an option for unknown primary.
