Who has had herniated disc surgery to relieve nerve compression? What was your recovery like?

I'm having this done on Thursday. I'm not scared, just want to know what I should expect. Please, don't freak me out (lol)!!!!
----------

While I, myself, has not had this done, I have assisted on MANY, MANY, MANY of these surgeries.

A small incision is made. The surgeon gets down to where the disc is bulging out. Removes the bulging portion and makes sure that nothing else is pressing on the nerve. Then he closes the wound with sutures.

Once you are in the recovery room and awake, you will notice that your pain that you had before the surgery is gone. Your nerve is no longer being compressed, so your pain is gone. You may have some pain and soreness because of the incision and surgery itself, but patients say that it is nothing like the pain they had when their nerve was being compressed. Depending on your job, you would most likely be back to near normal activity in about 2 weeks. Everybody is different and has different pain tolerances. The surgeon would also send you home with pain meds if you needed them.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Muscle wasting questions due to ulnar nerve compression?

Can muscle wasting due to ulnar nerve compression recover even partially through long-term strength training workouts even if the hand never reaches the same results as a healthy hand?
Does muscle wasting stop after ulnar nerve surgeory?
----------

The human body has the same regeneration system as amphibians that regrow limbs. Ours does not work automatically you have to direct it. The basic information is posted here http://www.helium.com/tm/148271
The results are completely dependant on the amount of time and effort you put into fixing the problem.  (+ info)

Mal de Debarquement Syndrome
A support page for people with MDDS

Mal de Debarquement Syndrome
A persistent rocking or disequilibrium sensation after prolonged exposure to motion
How to pronounce mal de debarquement
UPDATE: Mal de debarquement syndrome is often abbreviated to just mal de debarquement (MDD) in the literature. This unfortunately often gets confused with the more common "major depressive disorder" also abbreviated as MDD. Thus, we are endeavouring to get people to refer to it as MDDS to avoid this confusion.

Take the new Mal de Debarquement Syndrome online survey!

Welcome!
Welcome to the Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MDDS) support page, a page designed for people who have this rare and poorly understood vestibular disorder.

The goal of this page is to:

gather together information to help people with mal de debarquement
provide a support group to discuss what does and doesn't seem to work in coping with MDDS
contact other MDDS patients around the world
learn more about the current medical knowledge with respect to MDDS
discover other resources and information concerning MDDS

Quick Spins -- other causes.
In essence then, MVC is a syndrome of vestibular (quick spins, possibly combined with motion intolerance) or positional auditory symptoms that respond to treatment with medications for neuralgia (e.g. carbamazepine or oxcarbamazine), and in which other reasonable causes (i.e. Meniere's disease, Migraine, labyrinthitis, fistula) have been excluded.

Logically, there is nothing about this constellation of symptoms that requires a vascular origin. The key features of the syndrome boil down to what should describe an electrical problem - -very brief and strong symptoms, that respond to neuralgia medications. Anything that irritates the vestibular nerve or central vestibular pathways, should cause similar symptoms, and the literature says that it does (e.g. Moon and Hain, 2005).

Thus a more reasonable name for this syndrome is vestibular paroxysmia.  (+ info)

what is compression of the 8th cranial nerve has any one been daiganosed with that and what did you do?

That nerve is responsible for your sense of hearing and deals with your bodies' sense of balance as well. Damage to this nerve may cause deafness, ringing of the ears, dizziness, vertigo and vomiting (from the sense of nausea). I found a ton of information at the following website regarding treatment and rehab. It usually includes valium and something for the nausea like phenergan along with rehab exercises with your eyes, etc. http://www.medicinenet.com/vestibular_balance_disorders/page4.htm  (+ info)

Do I have ulna nerve compression?

About 3 time a week I wake during the night with complete numbness/paralysis down the inside of my forearm and my 5th finger and half of my ring ringer, bilaterally. Moving my arm releases this almost instantly, but I have recently been noticing very light pins and needles during the day, and when I swim I also get pins and needles in the same location (my little finger and ring finger). I am 26 and otherwise completely healthy. Is this something I should be concerned about?

maybe -treat the pain, see a chiropractor, get a massage, avoid repetitive activity, soak your arm in the hot tub, do yoga, and see your doctor.  (+ info)

Chronic back pain. Reason:Exiting left C7 nerve root compression.Whether surgery required ?

C6-C7 disc shows moderate left foraminal subligamentous extrusion. MRI appearance suggestive of chronic disc.Extruded disc with associated postolateral osteophytes-leading to narrowing of left C6-C7 neural foramen-resulting in compression of exiting left C7 nerve root.Uncovertebral osteophytes contributing to the posterolateral osteophytes/neural foraminal narrowing.

It's a LAST option- often leaving you worse than you started. The Cervical area is tricky- if they slip you are in big trouble. I would try less invasive treatments and I would give it time.  (+ info)
