i have Optic neuritis what are the chances of it coming back and me having ms?

Your chances of developing MS in the next ten years are 38% according to a study done by the Mayo Clinic. Did they do an MRI to look for the lesions that are indicative of multiple sclerosis? If they did an MRI and found even one lesion your chances of developing MS are 56%. Are they going to treat your optic neuritis with steroids? If they do your chances of developing MS are greater according to studies. The chances of the optic neuritis coming back if it is not the result of MS are minimal if you do not have or develop MS.  (+ info)

I'm having a little trouble with depth perception, like I can't get the toothpaste on my toothbrush straight, and it takes me several tries to get a cap on a pen, and typing is a little awkward. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't seem to notice this with things further away. Any advice? Will I get used to this?
I'm actually only looking for people who have personally experienced this.
But thank you milk for saying I will adjust.

I didn't have it for the same reason but I did have the same symptoms. It will take some time but you will gradually adapt to this & compensate for it but it will get better.  (+ info)

Can somebody please tell me more/share with me about the condition of Neuritis and its treatments?

Neuritis is a complex process involving inflammation of the nerves, resulting in irritation that interferes with normal nerve function and the areas served. Specifically, it affects the peripheral nerves (those outside the brain, spinal cord, or central nervous system), blocking sensory and motor functions, with pronounced symptoms.

Homeopathic Medicine & Treatment for Neuritis
#Aconite. [Acon]
In simple neuritis acute stage, caused by exposure to cold, Aconite is the only remedy needed when applied early. The numbness, coldness, tearing pains, nightly aggravation, with mental anguish, will indicate the remedy.

#Arnica. [Arn]
This remedy seems to have a selective affinity in relieving terminal nerve pain and the soreness and bruisedness will be the indications. Many observers think it all sufficient in neuritis. It it fails some resort to Bellis perennis, which is very often curative with intense nerve pains and great soreness. O'Connor and Butler recommended it highly. It also suits, as well as Arnica, traumatic cases.

#Hypericum. [Hyp]
Traumatic neuritis with sharp cutting pain, where nerves have been lacerated and the parts exceedingly sore.

#Rhus toxicodendron. [Rhus-t]
In the traumatic occasionally, but more especially in the rheumatic variety is Rhus curative. It has tearing, drawing and shooting pains. Exposure neuritis --or that due to over exertion coupled with exposure finds in it a curative remedy. It also suits the gouty form. General Rhus symptoms such as amelioration by motion and aggravation from coldness and dampness will prevail. Elliott finds Ferrum phosphoricum and Kali muriaticum the best remedies in rheumatic neuritis.

#Cimicifuga. [Cimic]
Alcoholic neuritis will frequently indicate this remedy. Ledum and Plumbum are also remedies for the alcoholic variety, and the latter is especially indicated in cases where atrophy appears, no matter what the variety.

#Arsenicum [Ars]
is a powerful remedy in neuritis and its best field seems to be in multiple neuritis of a severe type, with the characteristic symptoms of burning worse at night and relief by heat. It will suit especially the broken down constitutions, anaemic conditions and irritability so often accompaniments of multiple neuritis. Phosphorus is also frequently indicated and employed in the multiple variety.

#Anantherum muriaticum [Anan]
Has cured root neuritis and Thallium should be studied here. Carburetum sulphuris has been used successfully in neuritis, especially in the sciatic variety.

Anyone heard of Optic Neuritis?? Anyone Experienced/Can Tell Me What it is?

I have Bilateral Optic Neuritis (ON)
I have no sign of MS...
I'm having the same symptoms of when I got it the first time, so could I get it again??

Thank You x
----------

It is an inflammation of the optic nerves in both eyes. It can be idiopathic or due to a neurological disease. In other words, sometimes no cause is ever found. Somewhere around 40% of the people who get it do develop multiple sclerosis or some other neurological disease within ten to fifteen years.

I had optic neuritis as a presenting symptom of MS, and it involved a lot of pain. Of course not everyone experiences pain with it. Usually it happens in just one eye rather than both eyes and begins to resolve itself in two to three weeks. However, it can result in reduced color vision, poor night vision, permanent blurred vision or blindness. Yes, you could get it again. Most of us only have a single occurrence of it, but that is not always the case obviously.  (+ info)

what is the best way for curing an optic neuritis?????

As the answer above it depends on the cause........And I don't think there is a complete cure for Optic Neuritis but some vitamins "B1,B6,B12" and Folic Acid may be useful. The best cure is treatment of the original cause..If diabetes diet control beside medical control to blood glucose level will enhance the case..  (+ info)

i have optical Neuritis in one eye. it is very blurry and the color is gone can lasic surgery fix that?

i have had it since 2002 it not going anywhere
----------

Unfortunately, LASIK will not fix any problem with the optic nerve. All refractive surgeries (of which, LASIK is just one) are limited to correcting the way the eye focuses light. The optic nerve is the cable that takes the signal from the eye to the brain. No amount of focusing light can make up for a problem with the optic nerve.

As for optic neuritis, there are three main optic nerve disorders that present as an inflammation of the optic nerve head (or neuritis):

1) Transient optic neuritis that is most often present in younger adults and may be associated with multiple sclerosis. This type often shows improvement over weeks but there is always at least some mild loss of color vision and it can recur.

2) Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) tends to occur in middle-aged men and often leaves a permanent visual field defect as well as loss of color vision.

3) Arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) is an emergency. This tends to occur in older adults and can rapidly lead to blindness in both eyes unless it is treated with high-dose steroids. Often there are other symptoms such as weight loss, fatigue, temple soreness or headache, jaw ache with chewing. Vision loss is permanent.

Hope this was helpful.

Has anyone here ever been diagnosed with Optic Neuritis?

but did not have Multiple Sclerosis? Did you develop MS later on? If there was a different cause for your ON, did you ever find out what it was?
Thank you for the links gangadharan_nair.

I am familiar w/ this condition, I was diagnosed with it in June 2005 and my brain MRI came back normal so I'm just hoping there are others out there that have experienced this and can share their stories.
----------

In less than half the cases of ON and abnormal brain scans, there actually is absolutely no cause, and it simply resolves itself within weeks to months. It's about 55% of cases in which ON is actually MS (yeah, I'm one of the 55%). Remember too, that only 3% of people who have ON and normal scans will have another MS symptom in the following 2 years.

Not a great answer to be sure, but I'm assuming you've heard of the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trials. Only 7.5% of patients who had ON and normal brain scans who were treated with IV steroids went on to develop MS, as opposed to 16% who were treated with oral steroids or placebo. Actually, oral steroids alone produced more ON symptoms than the placebo.

As a result of the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trials, ophthalmologists now treat patients with optic neuritis with either IV, followed by oral, steroids, or no treatment at all. Specifically, patients are not treated with oral steroids alone. For those patients who are treated, the regimen is typically 3 days of IV steroids followed by 10 to 14 days of oral steroids.

Hi, has anyone suffered from Optic neuritis?

I was diagnosed with Optic neuritis 3 months ago after going completely blind in my left eye. I know about the condition and possible links with MS etc. 3 months in i only have about 60 percent vision in my left eye with very little periferal vision. Has anyone suffered this condition and what were your lasting effects or did you make a complete recovery? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Mercifully, not I.
