?Ever hear of Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumors Of Infancy?

My son was born with these rare tumors, Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumors of Infancy. He is seven now and I have never met or heard of any one else with this condition. All I can find is case studies and medical info. I know all the info about the tumors, but we want to know of some one else who has dealt with or is dealing with this.

Have you talked to NORD? They will know, or know who to ask.

Ever heard of, or know anyone with Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor?

I have a cancer called Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (PNET). I know it is rare, and for curiousity sake, want to know if anyone has either had it, or knows anyone with it or who has had it, and what their experience is or was with it. Thanks
My tumor is in the left side of my chest, against the chest wall, and had pushed through and wrapped around a few of my ribs. Prognosis seems to be good, finished chemo, radiation, heading into surgery soon.
----------

Hi Anna,

I have seen a few patients with PNET as I work in the field.Symptoms, outcomes, everything is so variable depending where it is , how treated etc.
You might find it interesting to go to virtualtrials.com (this web page is endorsed by National Cancer institute) .They have also chat rooms where even the rarest tumors find others who have it.
I hope you are doing well and everything will go very well.
All the best from mary a  (+ info)

Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor Cancer while Pregnant?

I am 22 years old, and just found out i am pregnant. I was diagnosed with Primitive Neuroectoderal Tumor in 2006. In the past year I have gone through 4 surgeries (remove tumor, reconstruion, put in and removal of port), 23 cycles of chemo (11 of vincristine, doxyrubicin, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, etoposide, and ifosfamide, and 12 cycles of cyclophosphamide and topotecan), 25 rounds of radiation. My tumor is in the chest. Does anyone know of any research or ideas?
----------

Anna,
Are you in remission or still going through treatment? I'm trying to understand if you are worried about further treatment if you are pregnant or if there will be problems with this pregnancy given all your prior treatment...  (+ info)

Has anyone ever encountered "Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy" or know of someone who has?

There are very few cases of this cancer even being reported or documented since 1918. Has anyone ever encountered this type of cancer personally or know of someone who has? My son is 21-months-old and is currently undergoing chemo for the disease and reacting well so far to the treatment. Just wondered if there are others who have had experience with it or not. From the stats that we have seen so far from research, not many survive.

What causes tumors in rats and whats the best way to prevent them from occurring?

A few years ago when I was a freshmen in High School I had a siamese rat which got 2 tumors under her front legs and a large one on the side of her face. Now I'm in college and just yesterday I brought a female fancy rat (named Macie) which is about 3 months old.

What could I do to prevent Macie from getting tumors?

What causes tumors in rats?
----------

Congratulations on your new rat.

Most tumors that rats get (both female and male) are mammary tumors, even though they aren't all actually located on the chest. Many people very effectively prevent their development in females rats by spaying the rat. That is one option if you are really concerned about tumors.

Other people (including myself) do not choose to spay because even though there is a risk that our rats will get mammary tumors, most mammary tumors are benign and a good, reasonable vet will remove them for a relatively small cost. This is a less serious operation than a spay and can extend a rat's life up to a year in many cases!

Many people don't realize that it is cheap and easy and relatively safe to take most tumors off of rats (as long as you have good rat friendly and experienced vet), so this is something you should keep in mind. There is no reason to live in fear of tumors.

The other really important thing to keep in mind is diet and exercise. This article is a very good introduction to rat dietary needs and has a list of foods that cause and prevent cancer in rats: http://www.ratfanclub.org/diet.html

Exerisise may lower the risk of cancer and other diseases.

Believe it or not things have changed rapidly in the rat world during the last ten years and cancer is no longer the number one threat to pet rats' health. Mycoplasmosis, a bacterial infection which all rats have and have had for decades, now kills more rats because it leaves them vulnerable to infections by secondary bacteria which humans have made stronger by over using antibiotics!

To learn about this and anything else you want to know about your rat's health I suggest this website: http://ratguide.com/health/ It is the rat keeper's bible.

Finally, I would like to encourage you to get a same sex companion for your single rat as rats lead much heathier lives and are much friendlier pets if they can live in pairs. I suggest you read this article: http://www.nfrs.org/company.html  (+ info)

Do eyeglasses mess up your peripheral vision? Do you use your peripheral vision much when you drive?

I've been wearing contacts for most of my life. But now I have an astigmatism and the lenses to correct it sometimes shift, causing blurry vision. I'm afraid this will happen while I'm driving. Laser surgery is too expensive right now, so I'm thinking of getting eyeglasses to use while driving. My concern is that the glasses will interfere with my peripheral vision. Not a problem most of the time, but will it affect my driving?
----------

Eyeglasses don't really do much for the peripheral vision because peripheral vision isn't really designed to be detailed or clearly-defined. You'll still notice lights and movement, and your natural instinct will be to turn your head towards such stimuli.  (+ info)

Can I sue the cigarette companies for Peripheral Arterial Disease?

My father smoked for 40 years and although I've tried to get him to stop many times and he has on occasion but now Peripheral Arterial Disease has really got him in pain all day long, he doesn't drive so he is very restricted, I know they have been sued for emphasima before but this is new and very common?
Its amazing to me the amount of anger and uncompassionate comments that has been received. Do you think growing up trying to get my father to stop was simply a matter of doing it. He is addicted and when he started smoking it was pushed on him. It doesn't stop the pain seeing him suffer. Our community can't even support those who need it. Where is the compassion in the world.

Underthesea223 you give me hope that our community still has hope for the people in it.
----------

I am very sorry to hear about your father.

Unfortunately, you would find such a lawsuit very expensive and probably very unrewarding. Even if the case was won, the only ones who would really make money are the lawyers. You would also be confronted every day with anger and bitterness towards a company that cares far more about selling cigarettes than about your father's life. I'm sure you have a lot of anger and fear and perhaps even guilt. Trying to sue the cigarette industry is not going to absolve you of any of this pain; in fact, it will probably only make it worse because you will have to think about it every day and use it to drive you forward.

I hate to say it, but you will also face a lot of people who will judge your father for his habit of smoking cigarettes. It's terrible, I know. Again, I am very sorry to hear about your father's illness.  (+ info)
