How do I donate to a public cord blood bank?

I am due in about 4 weeks, and have been interested in Cord Blood Banking for research developement purposes. All of the private banks cost to much (insurance will not cover it) and most of the time it is held for your personal use, not to be used for research or to help others in need. I want to donate my baby's cord blood to a public bank (which is free and gets used to help others in need and/or for research). I have come up against a brick wall when trying to find a way to donate as there are no public banks in my area. Does anyone know of a way to donate to a public bank if it is out of your area? If you know of any that are in the central valley of California that would be helpful as well.

As one of the few who's benefitted from a cord blood transplant, I know how priceless it is. You can find out more from the link I've referenced on how to donate cord blood. It might be too far along in your pregnancy to donate now but you can contact stemcyte and they'll send you a kit to take to the hospital with you when you are about to deliver. This option allows your dr to collect the cord blood after your baby is born, especially if your hospital is not a participating hospital.

Here's the story on how cord blood saved my life:

How much does it cost to bank Cord Blood?

I'm planning on banking my baby's cord blood. So I was wondering what it costs. Has anyone banked their baby's cord blood?
----------

You should find everything you need to know right here - http://www.viacord.com/pricing-storage-plans.htm

Now this is only one bank, but I would guess that they all cost about the same.  (+ info)

How does a baby die from a cord around the neck?

I saw a question about someone losing their baby at 8 months due to a cord around the neck. Several others posted that they knew someone it had happened to as well.
My question is how can a cord around the neck kill a baby in utero? The baby is not breathing - so what happens to kill the baby - anyone with a link please post this as well - it would be helpful.
----------

It not only cuts off the blood flow to the brain, but cuts off the food supply as well. I lost a baby this way at 16 weeks. Once the baby dies, either you start to miscarry naturally, or you would have to get a D&C to remove the baby.  (+ info)

What part of your spinal cord would you have to damage to die?

What parts of the spinal cord tell the heart to beat and the lungs to breath so if you damaged it you would die pretty suddenly?
----------

The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular bundle of nervous tissue and support cells that extends from the brain (the medulla specifically). The brain and spinal cord together make up the central nervous system.
The spinal cord itself doesn't regulate the respiratory or cardiac centers, they are located in the brain.
Infections in the spinal cord fluid can travel to the brain and affect these areas.Trauma to the brain would cause deterioration(due to lack of blood supply) to these areas and eventually death.  (+ info)

Has anyone stored their baby's umbilical cord in a cord blood bank? How much does it cost?

I was just wondering about cord blood banking. I would appreciate any opinions on it. What it is. Whose done it and how much it costs. I think it sounds great to do.
----------

We have my son's cord blood stored at ViaCord. I think it was about 2,000 for the initial fee (collection and testing etc). I think we now pay $10 a month for storage.
I was up in the air about whether or not we should do it. I then realized I would rather be safe than sorry. My friend's cousin passed away last year, he was only 10. The doctor's said if his cord blood was saved he would have lived....that scared me enough to do it!  (+ info)

can a nuchal fold be a false postitve depending on how the baby is positioned in the womb during the test?

ultrasound yesterday to check the baby and the tech. said that the nuchal fold was thicker than he wanted. The test was done at 21 weeks...doesn't the fold increase in thickness as the baby gets bigger? All other test negative or abnormalities

How long does it take for the umbilical cord to fall off? And is it normal for it to be leaking liquid?

My son is 11 days old and he still has his umbilical cord. I thought it was doing really good but then today it had made a small stain on his clothes that looks like blood. It is detached on one side but still well intact on the other. People say to clean with alcohol but doctor said to just keep clean and wipe off when giving bath. Is this normal? And how soon will the cord fall off? Does the blood mean it is infected?
----------

If its just dark blood staining I wouldn't worry. Bright red blood would indicate injury to the stump, like maybe it got pulled a bit. If it's got pus and smells bad it might be infected. I didn't use alcohol on my babies' umbilical cords, just a drop or 2 of breast milk at every diaper change. Stumps fell off after less than a week. I would try breast milk for a few days and wouldn't be surprised if that does it for you :)  (+ info)

What happens to the umbilical cord after the baby is born and it is cut?

I was wondering what happens to the umbilical cord after it's cut from the baby???
I mean what happens to the rest of the umbilical cord that is still in your uterus
----------

The other end of the umbilical cord is attached to the placenta. It is expelled after the baby is born.  (+ info)
