Start with anticipating what the needs of the infant will be once he's d/c'd to home from NICU. Will he need nutritional support, continued medical care from specialists, medications, home health, continued ventilation or supplemental oxygen supplies? Any other DME or other equipment? Who will be the primary caregiver? Will there be a backup to provide respite? What about the family? They may have knowledge deficits, fears and other concerns that need to be addressed. The parents may need to be educated/trained in the care of the infant and the infant's needs. The family needs a support network and resources to turn to when needed.

can severe eyeball laceration be effectively repaired & blindness be circumvented?

Dear all,
My nephew was involved in a motorcycle accident last Monday. The impact on his left eye resulted in laceration at the back of his eye which covered almost 50% of his eyeball. I was told that most of the contents of his eyeball was expelled.

The Opthalmic surgeons managed to sew back his eyeball. The optic nerves doesn't seem to be affected, but the prognosis was that he will be blinded and his condition is totally irreversible.

They are more concerned about the possibility of sympathetic ophthalmia right now.

Is there any chance that there are techniques, procedures or new technology that may assist him to regain at least partial sight on his left eye.

Thank you.
