How to reduce body weight which help in reducing the osteoarthritis knee pains?

My mother is aged by 65years, can anyone tell me the best way to lose her weight, she is suffering with osteoarthritis knee pains. She walks little but could not do exercise.

Sincere thanks,
----------

By any chance is there a seniors water exercise program in her area? This is a great non-stressful exercise particularly for people with osteo-a. It will not only give her better health and take off the weight, but Iit seems to help some people with the arthritis.
Getting into a group may also introduct her to other women with similar issues - the group aspect tends to encourage all of us to get with the program!  (+ info)

How should treat with knee Osteoarthritis?

I am 27 and play basketball. Recently injured my knee while playing. Orthopedist says I have a knee osteoarthritis.

Thanks in advance.
Thank you all for answering. They took the X-ray first then the MRI. Thanks again all!

At this age you want to protect the knee as much as possible. To do this you want to do activities that strengthen the knee muscles and keep trauma to a low point. Basketball is not a low impact activity so the choices there are somewhat limited. First put gel inserts into the shoes to help with absorption and keep your shoes as new as possible. When the shock absorption feels like it is going they must be replaced. Playing on cement is not a good idea but if you must play try the hardwood. Short of that you must exercise the entire leg. Super slow exercises are the best way for you to go. All movements should take ten seconds to do in each direction. You only need one set per exercise movement. Weights are really low in super slow patterns as the speed of the movement requires more effort but there is significantly less stress. The use of machines is a better choice for you than free weights. A switch in exercises might also help you. There are plenty of them out there that have low stress levels to the knees. Remember just building up the quads is not the answer but the entire surrounding musculature must be addressed. As the doctor for a referral to a physical therapist. They will be able to help you in this endeavor.  (+ info)

what is the best treatment for osteoarthritis knee problem?

my mom has developed knee problem from osteoarthritis. She is 55 years old. due to the problem, she couldn't do the gardening she likes doing.

I would recommend Homeopathy Treatment for your mother.

For right knee, take Arnica 200 - 3 doses 1 day then Bryonia 30 - Daily 2 doses.

For left knee, take Rhus Tox 200 one day 3 doses then, Bryonia 30 - Daily 2 Doses.

For both the knees - Bryonia 30 - Daily Twice and Aurum Met 1M - intercurrently.

Consult a Doctor/Registered Physician before use. I strongly recommend that dont take it without consulting a doctor.

For Heaven sake dont opt for surgical treatment.

Give Medicines to your mother with Strong Belief.

Wish your mother a Speedy Recovery.

God Bless.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis in the knee/hip?

I wondered what the symptoms were, what the pain is like and what tests dr's carry out to diagnose? Also, can osteoarthritis run in families-if your grandmother and mother had early onset osteoarthritis is it more likely you will develop it? Any help appreciated, thank you!
----------

dad has osteoarthritis in his hip and knee.

the symptoms are the usual obvious ones, aches, pains and cramps, but also you can find it hard to walk at times and the leg may completely seize up.

it can be genetic but also weight and other factors play a bit part. if you have been overweight for a while it can put a strain on your joints, or if you have an accident, even if it was ages ago, it can cause osteoarthritis.

most of the time you can just got for an xray to check fo it, and a blood test will be needed aswell.  (+ info)

Should I have surgery for knee osteoarthritis?

I am only 26 and I have early stage osteoarthritis in my knee. My MRI did not show any meniscal tears. I took physical therapy for 8 weeks and it seemed to help but now it's getting worse. My knee constantly pops when I walk and I can't exercise much. My surgeon wants to "scope" my knee and "pick" the bone but from what I've read online arthroscopic surgery doesn't have good reviews. Has anyone had experience with it? If so what was your experience and what was the recovery like?
----------

I would try to opt for a repeat MRI or arthrogram...there is a certain percentage of meniscal tears that will not show up on MRI (ie, false negative). A repeat may pick it up.

If still negative, I would seek out other conservative treatments such as cortisone or synvisc injections.

If all else failed, yes, it may be worth it to have a better look inside...arthroscopy is a relatively simple procedure to recover from, (about 4-6 weeks of PT) and most are off their crutches in 3-7 days. That is, provided, there was no MAJOR damage found.  (+ info)

What kind of exercise are suitable to relief knee pain cause by osteoarthritis?

In addition to what has been posted above ,by 'thelastp' I would recommend doing Quadriceps exercises.

Quadriceps is the muscle in front of the thigh. Developing that muscle prevents disabilities due to osteo arthritis of the knee.

One such exercise is

1. Lie on a flat surface with face up and legs extended and together. With each leg do the following exercises
2. Raise the extended leg about 9 inches wit knee extended and count up to 10 seconds and lower. Repeat about 15 times.
Do the same with the other limb too.

Do these exercises at least once daily through out.

Best and quickest treatment for the knee osteoarthritis ?

I'm 46 years old, I'm a very sport man, suddenly I had a pain in my right knee 4 months ago. After I made X-ray, doctors said that it is knee osteoarthiritis.
I'd like to come back to my sport as quick as possible.
----------

The bad news is, osteoarthritis is forever, and ultimately progressive. The good news is, the best treatment for it is a healthy lifestyle. As a 'sport man', you should be able to do this well.

Healthy lifestyle: this means keeping your weight down a slow as you can and engaging in weight bearing aerobic activity 4 to 6 times a week.

The problem with arthritis is it is an overuse that progresses to a loss of articular surface on the joint with accompanying pain and swelling. Avoid sports that are really really hard on the knees, like ski jumping. Running, if done properly, usually helps, as does weight lifting. You might want to consider a good knee brace as well.

The final thing to consider is 'pills'.

Your problem is a chronic inflammation. A good anti-inflammatory might be in order. Talk to your doctor to get his/her input, but good choices are Alleve [naprosyn] Motrin [ibuprofen] and Celebrex [my favorite, but expensive]. At first you may get away with taking only as needed, but trust me, you will get the most benefit from daily use. Remember, it is progressive damage from inflammation, so why not keep the inflammation at bay?  (+ info)
