I have Osteoarthritis in my knee...don't want to cancel wedding in 5 weeks.?

Please, if anyone can help I would be forever greatful. I was just told I have osteoarthritis in both knees. I was give cortisonce injections into each knee 2 weeks ago today. The swelling is the same. 3 days ago I was started on Lodine every morning for paid & swelling. The knees are the same. I am scared I have to cancel my July 7th wedding. I would never be able to stand for a wedding/reception. Everything is paid for. Also, my future inlaws purchased us a honeymoon package of 10 days in Italy to visit family. I could never walk the airport, let alone Italy. I don't want them to lose money but they did not purchase insurance. If I don't go, we all lose. The doc says if the swelling goes down, my knees will feel better, but nothing has worked. I've rested and iced both knees for about 4 weeks. If anyone can suggest something I can try or tell my doctor to do, please tell me. What is supposed to be the most important day of my life will soon be my worst. Thank you

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors are a class of nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory agents. These specific COX-2 inhibitors appear to be as effective as current non-selective NSAIDs in treating the pain and inflammation of arthritis. the most commonly used one is "Lyrica," ask your medical doctor if you could try this drug. It works fast and many people are switching to this type of drug for Osteoarthritis. Also swim every day as this will help strengthen the knees without placing stress on the joints.

I've also enclosed a link where you can read about natural herbs and supplements that could help.

I truly want you to have a wonderful wedding.  (+ info)

Has anyone ever had a cartilage transplant in knee joint or knows a site where I can ask such patients ?

My mother has been suffering from osteoarthritis and her doctor has suggested a cartilage transplant procedure wherein the healthy cells are allowed to multiply in a laboratory, harvested and then transplanted to the location of pain (here: the knee joint). Has anyone of you ever gone through the same procedure or knows someone having gone through the same or a site where I can find such patients?
----------

Angelwid,I can only suggest that you go on line and type in the search bar patients that have gone through cartilage transplants.I had a torn Meniscus and when the orthopedic surgeon went to repair it he had found that I had a hole in the actually bone, this led to a bigger surgery for me,I had to have a cadaver bone inserted in to my leg.It took a long time for me to come back as far as walking,I couldn't bare any weight for 2 months on the leg and then I had to have a lot of physical therapy.Don't worry your mom will be just fine,I even fell down and broke my hip and had to have 3 titanium screws inserted to hold it together because they felt I was too young for a new hip,I've had in total 6 knee surgeries and have come back just fine from all of them and I'm 53 years old.People have knee replacements done every day,and I know that your mom will make a come back from having this done,I hope at least this gives you some reassurance in the surgery that she has to have.I hope this helps you out and I wish your mom the best,Tomb Raider.  (+ info)

Osteoarthritis in my knee, I'm only 31, what are my treatment options?

Hi all. I'm 31 years old. I DO NOT have insurance, and I pay out of pocket for all my medical expenses. I put off going to the doctor about my right knee for some time. It makes a terrible cracking and grinding noise if, when sitting, I extend my leg and lower it. It hurts walking up/down stairs and my knee often feels like its going to give out on me. I had an X-ray done on my right knee, and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

I'm pretty sure the same thing is going on in my left knee, too, just not as bad.

I was given a steroid shot in my right knee and told that if it gets any worse, call them again.

Now I'm left with weak knees that hurt when I climb stairs. I am afraid to exercise cause I don't want to injure it more, but I have about 30 excess pounds to lose (which would probably help the knee anyway). I have no idea what to do. I can't seek a second opinion... I spend all my extra cash on the first opinion, X-ray, and steroid shot. Paying for physical therapy is out of the question. Does anyone have any advice?

I am advised leg bone soup for osteoarthritis. Can anyone suggest equally effective vegetarian alternative.?

Doctors have advised me to take leg bone soup daily for osteoarthritis of knee joints. But I am a vegetarian. Can anyone suggest an equally effective vegetarian alternative ?
----------

There's not a vegetarian alternative that will give you all the same nutrients, but there are vegetarian options for joint health. What you get from the leg bone soup would be collagen and cartilage, which help connective tissues including joints, skin, ligaments, etc... the only sources for those are from animals.

The main vegetarian options for joints would be Vegetarian Glucosamine (make sure it says Vegetarian as it can be made from shellfish or corn), MSM (an organic source of Sulfur), Tart Cherries (they help to metabolize Uric Acid, which is a common irritant of the joints), Danish Rose Hips, and Bromelain (from Pineapples). The hard part is that the best nutrient to help you the most will depend on what nutrients your body is lacking to cause the problem... you might need some nutrients that are from animal sources to best benefit your condition (the collagen and cartilage that was advised by your doctor, for example). Good luck and I hope I helped!  (+ info)

Can a person ride horses after they have bilateral knee replacements?

I am 52 years old and just had right knee replaced September 2, 2009 and will soon be having left knee replaced due to osteoarthritis.
----------

go and ask your doctor. my riding instructor had this and she rode without stirrups for a while so no pressure was on her knee and then started with a very long stirrup so only a little weight was on the knee and worked back up to normal riding. ask your doctor first though because every ones bodies are different!  (+ info)

What's a way to help knee pain/ability without the use of glucosamine/chondroitin?

I have the glucosamine, yet there is controversy over its effectiveness on knee-related OA (osteoarthritis). I'm looking for an alternative to chondroitin. Anything? Thanks.
----------

There is good evidence that the best thing you can do for your knee joint is to have strong muscles to support it. See a physiotherapist/physical therapist for appropriate strengthening exercises (it is important to make sure your patella/knee cap is tracking properly and that your feet aren't exacerbating the problem, which can happen if the arches are not maintained when you are standing and walking), and consider hydrotherapy/water exercises too.

If you are overweight, losing weight will help (less for your knee to carry around).

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate are naturally occurring in the body anyway, so they won't hurt if taken at the appropriate doses. Some people find fish oil is helpful too.  (+ info)

How long does a total knee or total hip replacement last?

I know that it depends on usage and that everyone is individual but do you know in general how long they are supposed to last? I had a total hip done in Feb and just had a TKN (knee) done 6 weeks ago. I'm doing VERY well for a knee replacement and I'm VERY happy about that. But I never really asked my doc(s) about how long they work till they wear out requiring revision surgery. I've HEARD from 10-20 yrs but is there something more exact out there? I'm female, 44, osteoarthritis, hepc, asthma, and bipolar if that helps. Anyone? Do you know? Any serious replys (or guesses!) are greatly appreciated!!!!!! Thanks a bunch in advance.
I *do* have osteoporosis and Prednisone is what CAUSED this bone death/deterioration (I took it for asthma for only 1 1/2 months!). I also take (for other reasons as well) 1200 calcium, 1200 magnesium, and 800 of vitamin D daily. So I guess I've got it covered. Author #3....you sure seem to know what you're talking about......did you have a joint replacement as well or did someone you know have one? Unfortunately in 15-20 years from now I will be 59- 64 or so and will have to go through revision surgery if I have a normal life span. This all sucks in a big way but I did it once........I can do it again. Thanks to all of you but sorry #1 and 2.....I'm picking #3 right now cuz I think that #3 knows "where it's at" the most. Thanks #1 and #2 too though. You were all helpful!!!!1
----------

about 15-20 years unless you have osteoporosis are or taking medicines like prednisone which might weaken your bone structure where the appliance might come unglued - I'm talking about knees here but I'm guessing stats for the hip are similar.
If I were you I'd be taking a good calcium/magnesium supplement daily along with 800U of vitamin D. The vitamin D is what makes the calcium and magnesium work well so don't forget it.

exercises and osteoarthritis of the knee?

I am a 28 year old female that has osteoarthritis of one knee. Basically I need a total knee replacement but I keep getting told I am too young. I try to exercise and strengthen my leg to see if that will help the pain. I have had Orthovisc injections and steroids.

My question is what are some good exercises to do to strengthen the leg. I cannot go up or down stairs, squat, put pressure on my knee, and walking for more than about 15 min causes pain. I usually do the elliptical or the stationary bike and a series of leg lifts with ankle weights. Any other suggestions?

Thank you!
----------

Start exercising slowly, and work up to performing exercises several times daily, if possible.

From the beginning, pay close attention to flexing and straightening the leg. It may be more comfortable to have someone move the leg for you while you are sitting or lying down. Ask a friend to help. But work at getting it straight and keeping it straight.

Next, begin gentle exercises. Tense the muscles in your upper leg, front and back at the same time, so that you are exerting force but your leg isn't moving. Exert the force for two seconds, then rest two seconds. Do ten repetitions three times a day.

Begin gentle active exercises. A bicycle in low gear is a good place to start. Stationary bicycles are fine. Be sure that the seat is relatively high. Your knee shouldn't bend to more than a right angle during the bicycle stroke.

Swimming and walking are probably the best overall exercises. Gradually increase your distances.
Avoid exercises or activities that simulate deep knee bends because they place too much stress on the knee. Knee problem can develop from the feet, so proper shoes can help.
See your doctor if pain remain after six weeks. I hope this helps you. And good luck.  (+ info)

What can a new trauma do to a knee with osteoarthritis?

I had an ACL repair done to my knee many years ago. I had a complete recovery and no problems since. In January I was hit by a car while walking my dog. The car hit the same knee. Since I have had mobility issues and server pain. After an MRI I was told I have bad osteoarthritis which I didn't even know I had. The Mri was done about 3 months after the car hit me. My doctor says I now need a total knee replacement, because the car hit me. The insurance company says that the need for the knee replacement is from the osteoarthritis not the car hitting me. My question is what damage could have been done to change the knee to cause me so much pain and mobility issues? How can I prove that even though I had arthritis (unaware to me) that the surgery is directly from the car hitting me? What would a new trauma add to a knee with osteoarthritis?
