What can I do to confort my best friend who is going into surgery?

My best friend is 16 and she is going into surgery for an Osteochondroma. She is really hates pain and the whole idea of going into surgery freaks her out. I love her to death and i want to help her calm down. I know telling her everything is gonna b okey is good but what else can I do to comfort her. Maybe I can buy her something that will call me her down before the surgery. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Osteochondroma Question?

I'm 15-So I have an *osteochondroma in the middle (key word middle ;) ) of my femur- Because of the placement my doctor told me that usually people get more of these tumors all over their body. He didn't find any by feeling my arms legs and head after and before the surgery but should i be worried about more tumors forming/growing else where on my body? I'd ask my doctor or physical therapist but i got out of physical therapy a while ago and its expensive to schedule an appointment with my CHOP doctor. Also, I know it could be genetic- if I have kids are they going to have these/this tumor?

Yeah so thanks. I know some of you are probably rolling your eyes because i should just be grateful i got out easy but it just stresses me out- I was really lucky-shouldn'tt have been able to use my leg because of the size and placement of it- and i had a great chance that it was cancer- and also that after the surgery that a would split my femur in a kajillio pieces. I'm just waiting for my luck to run out- you know? Thats like story of my life- HA! and I'm only 15. Can't wait to see how the rest of my life plays out- anywayyy :)

I'm sorry you had to have something like this to deal with at such a young age. I'm not an expert in the area but my understanding is that the hereditary type is when there are numerous osteochondromas involved. Males tend to carry this type more than females. Hopefully the type you have is going to only be one osteochondroma and they tend to stop growing when you reach adulthood. Your doctor will probably want to recheck you every few years until your bones stop growing (adulthood). I hope this helps. Good luck with your physical therapy and healing! (+ info)

what are the chances if an anesthesiologist making a mistake?

Im having surgery next friday im only 13 and Im getting a osteochondroma removed from my right femur. what are the chances of someone messing up on my while surgery?

This is very very very unlikely. There is more chance of you getting struck by lightening on the way to the hospital. Anesthesiologists and surgeons perform all types of operations every day, 7 days a week all year round and have to have years of intense training for this. They are highly skilled people who know exactly what they are doing and there best interest is the safety of patients. After all you go to hospital to get better. When is it you hear of people dying from a simple procedure, hardly ever if not never in your lifetime, just relax, everything will be fine. (+ info)

I have an osteochondroma. Should I be worried?

I was diagnosed as having an osteochondroma on my femur near my knee and a small cyst inside my knee after visting an orthopedic surgeon for knee pain. I do have a prior history of injury to that knee. The knee pain I was experiencing did not appear to be due to injury (sudden severe pain when I wasn't really moving) but would last for a few days and was gone. I haven't had much knee pain (just a touch of stiffness) since I got custom arch supports for my feet. The osteochondroma was diagnosed when I went for x-rays and an MRI of my knee. My doctor does not think that the osteochondroma was the source of my pain (i'm not so sure since the spot he pointed to on my leg where the growth is is where my knee pain was). I am a 21 year old female in generally good health. My doctor wants to see me for further x-rays in April or May and will x-ray both knees in order to do comparisons. I know my one leg is longer than the other.
I do not have any cartilage or ligament injuries, so that was not the cause of my knee pain.
My knee/leg started hurting again tonight after I bent it when I was playing with my dog. It seems to be about where my doctor pointed out where the osteochondroma was. My leg now feels sore and the muscles are really tense right near the bottom of my femur/top of my knee on the outside of my right leg (which was where the osteochondroma is). This is about the same spot I had the intense pain before. At least this pain isn't as bad.

When I initially felt the pain i felt almost like something went snap in the vicinity of my knee joint/end of my femur.

I'm not supposed to go back to see the surgeon until april or may when I get another set of x-rays, but if this happens again I might go back sooner. Or at least go talk to my family doctor about it.

It seemed like my knee was fine since november except for one night. I got orthotics in november too and they seemed to help with some of the problems with the area, but now the pain is back.

osteochondromas are generally harmless..usually causes of pain near osch is a bursitis........ swelling of a tissue covering osteochondroma ...
or a fracture of osteochondroma ...at its base...
or pressure on nerves or blood vessels.....
yeah if u have osch near growing part of bone it will be lengthier.
what about the cysts?were they meniscal cysts?

there are a lot of possible causes of pain around knee none seems to be significant as to need immediate treatment in you....

go with your doc....report if anything serious /different from usual occur....

I have a Osteochondroma. What's going on?

I kind of noticed a little bump on my left knee,just a little below the knee elbow or whatever you call it. I kind of just noticed it maybe a month and a half (I think) and I didn't really worry about it.

But then I showed my mom and she told me to get it checked out so we went to my doctor. We took a couple x-rays and told me that he'll call me the next day.

So he called my house and tells me I have something called Osteochondrona. I got kind of worried about it. He told me I had to get a MRI (I really don't know what that is). He told me that it could of been caused by a injury but I'm not sure when I had a injury. So my doctor thinks either i got this Osteochondroma thing or I could have some type of cancer.

I have no idea what this is and should i be worried about it? I saw that it's type of a tumor and I'm only 12 so when I hear tumor I think it's something seriouse.

Oh I forgot to mention. My doctor also kind of noticed that the little bump moved side to side but not up and down.

He told me that this wasnt only below my skin but behind my bone i believe he said.

It doesn't really cause any pain either.

if you need an MRI then that's what you need to do. it is just a fancy xray, doesn't hurt, you just lay very still while they take these special xrays of your leg.
the doctor isn't even sure of what you have until he's run all the necessary tests, so don't obsess about it until you have all the facts. (+ info)

who has osteochondroma?

My sister had a bone tumor near her hip joint. It was very painful and had grown until it interfered with the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. She was put on bed rest for 6 months and given several types of treatment. While it's a benign bone tumor, still it is very painful. (+ info)

Has anyone ever heard of Osteochondroma????

It is a benign bone tumor consisting of projecting adult bone capped by cartilage projecting from the lateral contours of endochondral bones.

Osteochondroma are the commonest benign tumor of bone. This are usually first diagnosed in persons between the ages of 10 and 25 years and typically are situated near the ends of the long bones.

Because osteosarcomas rarely become malignant, operation is not always necessary; however, any large osteosarcoma in a location susceptible to traumatization probably should be removed. (+ info)

How to read my MRI results for my left knee?

Its says I have:
1.) Partial thickness tear of the anterior cruciate ligament
2.)Oblique flap tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus
3.) small osteochondroma arising from the medial femoral epicondyle

my ortho says i need surgery. can someone give me a better understanding of my MRI results. and how long i will be ut if i have surgery? i'm 19 year old female and this was caused by a car accident. thanks in advance

Basically, you have two torn ligaments in your knee, and the tears are bad enough that surgery is needed to maintain the stability of your knee. There is also an abnormal amount of bone formation on the inside part of the thigh bone, which I am sure that the doctor will also want to remove. (+ info)

Does anybody know how to deal with the pain of a bone spur?

So last year I was diagnosed with an osteochondroma, which is basically a fancy word for a benign bone tumor/spur. It's always hurt, but lately the pain has escalated. I can't get it removed...yet, so I was wondering if anyone knows a good way to manage the pain when exercising. I take NSAIDs but they don't seem to help that much. Please help
the bone spur is on the top of my fibula and I take aleve for the pain. The doctor has only told me to take some aleve

you can try an shoe insert and if that doesn't help i would talk to you doctor about your pain and maybe ask about a cortisone shot, it helps with inflammation which may help your pain. (+ info)
