Does the fact that someone has developed Osteoporosis necessarily mean they?

are postmenopausal? Thank you for your help.
Okay. If it isn't what med would they give such a person since most of them say for postmenopasal people?
Hey James D..which med is best..the po or the Iv kind??
----------

No. Having osteoporosis does not mean you are post menopausal.

But being post-menopausal does increase your risk of developing osteoporosis since your estrogen levels decrease and estrogen is important in maintaining bone density. Although, lifetime exposure to estrogen may affect a woman's risk for breast cancer

If you have a deficiency in vitamin D or calcium that could also explain why you have bone loss. Did you recently get a T score and was it lower than -2.5? Also did they check your vitamin D level?

The daily recommendations for Calcium and Vitamin D intake for Adult Women & Men
*Calcium* *Vitamin D
1,000 mg 400-800 IU - 19 through 49 years
1,200 mg 800-1000 IU - 50 years and over

Edit: Part 2: They do have 3 oral Bisphosphonates on the market.
Actonel: Tablet: Once a week (35mg) or Once a month (150mg) dosing
Boniva: Tablet - Once a month dosing
Fosamax: Tablet - Once a week: only one available as a generic.
Reclast: 15 minute IV infusion - once a year - can be very expensive, check your insurance for coverage

The oral medications are taken first thing in the morning, with a plain glass of water, remaining upright and without any other food for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

All four of the medications are equally effective and if you plan on getting pregnant none of these are recommended. I suggest you decide based on cost and personal convenience.

Evista is one of those medications for post menopausal women with osteoporosis but bisphosphonates can be used by anyone. There are other medications but Bisphosphonates are typically the 1st choice.  (+ info)

What are the effects of gonorrhea on postmenopausal women/ women with their tubes tied?

It seems like most of the serious effects of gonorrhea in women are related to pregnancy complications. I'm looking for general info about this disease and women who can't get pregnant, either bc they are postmenopausal or have had their tubes tied. What will their symptoms be? Are they any less likely to contract the disease? What will the effects of the disease be? Thanks
----------

If the tubes are tied, then gonorrhea can cause endocervicitis that can end in a pelvic inflammmatory disease or tuboovarian abscess formation

What can I take for osteoporosis other than prescriptions medications?

I have been taking prescriptions meds for osteoporosis for 5 years. My bone density tests show no improvement, slight worsening of osteoporosis. My doctor says it's severe. I have a medical condition called gastroesophageal reflux for which I take medication and the osteoporosis meds seem to affect my reflux, also I have not felt well generally since I've been on the meds for osteoporosis, i.e. aching muscles and bone pain. I take Calcium with Vitamin D - I drink milk - are there any herbal or over-the-counter natural products that would be just as good as prescription medications for osteoporosis?
----------

The Vitamin D-calcitonin system is complex. Well functioning kidneys, sunshine and weight bearing exercise, as well as a good source of Ca++ are the only non prescription things that really help. At maximum, people only absorb less than 20% of available calcium. Milk is not the best source, as there is competing phosphorus, which somewhat displaces the intestine's ability to absorb calcium. I would suggest the soft chew calcium supplements.

Are you in a position to be able to hire a trainer for weight lifting? Not one of the high school jocks, but someone with physical therapy training? Yoga, or tai chi would be good, as improved balance lessens the chance of a disastrous fall.  (+ info)

What are some helpful ways to treat osteopenia (or osteoporosis) without using prescription drugs?

I'm working for a lady who has osteopenia (a form of osteoporosis) and she wants to try some alternative methods of treatment. She's also trying to find some sort of vitamin or supplement that would have calcium, vitamin D, Boron, Mangesium, and/or other components that help protect bone mass. If you know of any or can give any tips, please let me know!
----------

those are all good but D3 is better than D.
I take hylaronic acid too. Walmart sells it in the vitamin aisle.
Omega fatty acid is also good.
antioxidents, ginkgo, C, E, zinc and selenium are also good.  (+ info)

What is the single most important factor in reducing the incidence of osteoporosis in older women?

8)Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has been shown to be one way to reduce the incidence of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women, however recent clinical trials have indicated there are dangerous increased risks of heart disease, stroke and various cancers associated with HRT. What is the single most important factor in reducing the incidence of osteoporosis in older women and when do women need to start being concerned about this?
----------

I think the best method to help prevent osteoporosis is exercise. Exercise strengthens the bones in men and women.

Also there are good medications on the market to help prevent this condition:

If the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is the only issue under consideration, then bisphosphonates such as alendronate, ibandronate, or risedronate are more effective than menopausal hormone therapy in preventing osteoporotic fractures, and less likely to be associated with substantial adverse effects. So far, bisphosphonates are the most effective category or prescription medications for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis.

hope this helps..  (+ info)

The best exercise for osteoporosis is weight bearing exercise like running, walking, jogging, water aerobic exercise.....

Where is the evidence that osteoporosis causes bone fractures?

Please refer me to well-controlled, peer-reviewed studies that show:
1) Osteoporosis causes bone fractures.
2) Fosamax and other biophosphonates not only slow down bone density loss or increase bone density, but also prevent fractures.
Thanks.

Its common sense if the bones become less massive and deteriorate go on yahoo and do a image seach .The bones of women are 35 % less massive than men so they are more susucpetible to back problems than men so women should really taske it easy on there back.  (+ info)

Is combined Tamoxifen plus hormonal therapy better for breast cancer in pre or postmenopausal women and why?

I'm getting a massive mental block and can't remember or figure out which is the answer:

Is combined Tamoxifen plus hormonal therapy better for treating breast cancer in premopausal women or better for treating postmenopausal women? Why?
----------

You might have a mental block, but dozens of your questions have been answered by contributors with, to my knowledge, not the courtesy of a thankyou from you let alone a best answer.

They are not used together.

Types of hormone therapy
There are several types of hormone drugs used for primary breast cancer including
* Aromatase inhibitors * Tamoxifen
* Pituitary downregulators

Aromatase inhibitors
Although women who have had their menopause do not produce oestrogen from their ovaries, a small amount is produced by the adrenal glands (small glands above the kidneys). Aromatase inhibitors block this oestrogen from being made. So these drugs are used for women who've had their menopause. You take them as tablets once a day. There is information below about
* Aromatase inhibitors for early breastcancer * Aromatase inhibitors to prevent breast cancer

Aromatase inhibitors for early breast cancer

The aromatase inhibitors anastrozole, exemestane and letrozole can be used to treat women with early breast cancer, who have had their menopause. They are given after surgery and other treatment and aim to reduce the chance of the cancer coming back.
Tamoxifen
The type of hormone treatment which can be used for premenopausal women is to stop the ovaries from working with particular drugs or to remove the ovaries, so that they do not produce oestrogen. This is called 'ovarian ablation'. If you have not yet had your menopause, and you have ER positive breast cancer, you will usually be offered tamoxifen hormone therapy, and possibly chemotherapy. The chemotherapy will often stop your ovaries working, but not always.  (+ info)
