How do I get rid of chronic external otitis?

I had never had ear problems until last year. I have seen 2 specialists and they told me it was "swimmers' ear". I don't swim and they reccomended I wear ear plugs while showering. I did this and it didn't help.
It constantly feels wet and itchy in there. Sometimes it swells, sometimes it is painful, sometimes it drains a fluid, sometimes it bleeds. There is constant ringing. It's driving me mad.
I've paid hundreds of dollars for drops to put in there. I've put alcohol in there. I've put paroxide in there. These things help, but if I stop, it comes right back.
A co-worker mentioned that I may be allergic to my pillow. I bought a new hypo-allergenic one, but nothing changed. I haven't changed my soap or shampoo or hairspray in years, so it's not that either.
I'm willing to try anything. Any suggestions?

I just heard this one the other day. An alternative medicine Doc says to dissolve sea salt into warm water and drop into ear, leaving it for a minute. He swears that it will kill the infection... It's cheap and won't hurt you!! You might try taking allergy medicine as well... Something has to be causing it!  (+ info)

Otitis Media how long does it take to cure?

Iv had otitis media since Monday and its a like this feeling in my ear that i have water in it just wondering how long does it take to cure?? I dont feel any pain from my ear and the doctors just gave me alot of pills to eat..so are antibiotics others idk....Any ideas?
----------

Antibiotic therapy can take 7-10 days to clear up an ear infection depending on the severity. If fluid behind the eardrum begins causing pain ask your doctor for a referal to an otolarygologist (ear nose and throat doctor). They can make a tiny painless incision in the eardrum to relieve the pressure and take out the fluid.  (+ info)

What are the functions of the three tunics of an artery (intima, media, externa)?

Also, which tunic is thinner in a vein?
----------

U should understand the structure and the composition of three tunica to understand this
1) Tunica intima is the innermost layer which is covered with endothelium.. This is one of the most improtant layers.. They prevent the adhesion of the blood cells to the wall of the vessel and prevent the thrombosis and further complications of thrombosis.. If endothelium gets disrupted fatal thrombosis can occur..

2) Tunica media is the intermediate layer which contains smooth muscles which help in the increasing and decresing the calible of the artery.. whenever the BP increases, these relax and increase the calibre and reduce the BP.. And whenever the BP falls they contract and decrease the calibre which maintains the pressure... These are operated thro a complex mechanism for which this page is not enough!

3) Tunica externa is the serosal layer of the artery.. This helps in maintaining the integrety of the vessel.. If this would'nt have exist, the artery would have torn apart like an elastic baloon.. This provides the tensile strength to the vessel...

This is just an overview of the functions, I cannot explain them in detail here..

regarding the veins, They also have all the three layers, but unlike arteries the tunica media or muscular layer is extremely thin.. Hence veins cannot change their calibre much.. In low pressures they collapse and in high pressures distend..  (+ info)

what is the pathogen of otitis media?

what is the etiologic agent of otitis media? its pathogenisis? incubation period? mode of transfer?
----------

Etiology:
Pneumococcus species, Haemophilus influenzae (untypeable), and Moraxella species are the bacteria most commonly involved in acute otitis media. Various viruses, of which the most frequent are Rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), are often involved in acute otitis media.

Incubation period: according to the organism
Pathogenesis:
Acute otitis media usually arises as a complication of a preceding viral upper respiratory infection (URI). The secretions and inflammation cause a relative obstruction of the eustachian tubes. Normally, the middle ear mucosa absorbs air in the middle ear. If this air is not replaced because of obstruction of the eustachian tube, a negative pressure is generated, which pulls interstitial fluid into the tube and creates a serous effusion. This effusion of the middle ear provides a fertile media for microbial growth. If growth is rapid, a middle ear infection develops.
