What is the connection between malignant neoplasms and crabs?

The more common term for malignant neoplasms, cancer, is Latin for crab, and the word "carcinogen," meaning a cancer-causing agent, comes from the Greek word for crab, "karkinos." What is the connection between these two seemingly unrelated things?
----------

Cancer, both the disease and the astronomical constellation, derive from the Latin cancer or cancrum, meaning crab. The astrological sign, of course, is said to resemble a crab and the disease was so named by the ancient Greek physician Galen (129-200 A.D.) who noted the similarity between a certain type of tumor with a crab as well—the swollen veins around the tumor resembling the legs of a crab.

Old English adopted cancer directly from Latin and used it for a variety of spreading sores and ulcers. This early sense survives in the modern word canker. From c.1000 in a manuscript called Læce Boc (Leech Book), collected in Oswald Cockayne’s Leechdoms, Wortcunning, and Starcraft of Early England, Vol. II, 1865:

Gemeng wið þam dustum, clæm on ðone cancer.
(Mix with the dust, smear on the cancer.)

And from Wyclif’s 2 Timothy, 1382:

The word of hem crepith as a kankir

The word was being applied specifically to the disease we today call cancer by the beginning of the 17th century. From Philemon Holland’s translation of Pliny’s Historie of the World:

Cancer is a swelling or sore comming of melancholy bloud, about which the veins appeare of a blacke or swert colour, spread in manner of a Creifish clees.

The astronomical sense of cancer is from the Latin name for the constellation of the crab. The name was known to the Anglo-Saxons, but only as a Latin name and was not assimilated into English until the Middle English period. It appears in Ælfric’s De Temporibus Anni, written c.993, in a list of the constellations of the Zodiac:

Feorða • Cancer • þæt is Crabba
(Fourth, Cancer, that is the crab.)

The Anglicized name appears c.1391 in Chaucer’s Treatise on the Astrolabe:

In this heved of cancer is the grettist declinacioun northward of the sonne...this signe of cancre is clepid the tropik of Somer.
(At this first point (head) of cancer is the greatest declination northward of the sun…this sign of cancer is named the tropic of summer.)

How is it possible to have an ovarian cyst while on hormonal birth control?

A 4 cm ovarian cyst exists while on either birth control pills, or nuvaring. The doctor says it is a follicular cyst, yet all my research shows that hormones prevent and shrink ovarian cysts.
Pelvic pain/pressure has existed for several years, and many tests and procedures show nothing other than 1 cm fibroid & the cyst.
----------

i was on the patch when i had my first cyst it was 5.5cm, the patch was hormonal, so i would say yes, after getting off the birth control it went down to 2.5cm.
hope this helps, and good luck!  (+ info)

How do i set up a fundraiser for ovarian cancer?

I am 19 and my grandma has ovarian cancer. I want to do a car show in a parking lot or park or somewhere like that. I want to have a donation bucket to raise money and give it to an organization that supports ovarian cancer.

How should i go about starting this? Where do i start? And any helpful tips?
----------

You should contact an organization that is already founded and active. Fundraisers and drives are always in the making and in action. You can generate more money and you can get all of the tools you need from the your community organizers or organization headquarters. There's no reason for you to 'pioneer' your own fundraiser when there are already many out there. IF you absolutely are stubborn and you want to feel the rewards from just getting out and doing something or putting a donation jar at a store or event then you simply go to the place that you want to place it at and tell them your story. One of the first questions you will confront is: Who are you affilliated with? If you haven't researched or contacted organizations then you can't simply say you are affilliated with them. Well, you can but if they aren't aware of this you can be arrested for fraud. AND, some places won't accept non verifiable legitimacy (your word) as a precursor to accepting donations. Research or google ovarian cancer. If you want to help your grandmother with money for her medical bills then the best thing for you to do is to connect her with an existing donor base. There are millions of people who need help and help is out there; you just have to find it.  (+ info)

How will I know when my ovarian cyst ruptures as far as symtpoms?

Ihave a 2cm ovarian cyst. Go back for a ultra sound in a few weeks to watch it. Its very painful and I am off work so I am wondering when I will know or what I will feel when it ruptures if at all.
----------

Pain. Intense pelvic pain. When one of mine ruptured, I couldn't even move. Luckily it only lasts for about 30 minutes depending on the cyst. You'll know!
It felt like everything in that general area seized. My vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries and even my rectum. If you start feeling this, take some ibuprophen, sit and wait for the pain to subside. I had some nausea as well. My nurse told me she's had women who have had to pull off the highway because it was so intense. I don't want to scare you, but just prepare you.
Another thing - it's a good idea to inform your doctor after you think it's ruptured, they'll want to get you in for an ultrasound.  (+ info)

inoperable ovarian vein incompetence, what is the best way to live with this ?

I desperately need someone to be specific about looking after myself to minimise pain and risk in everyday life as my ovarian vein incompetence is inoperable, and I can't get advice from my GP as they don't know enough about it.
----------

I've never heard of this condition. You need to seek out a specialist who is familiar with it. How about your gynecologist? Deal with someone who is an expert on the topic of woman's pelvic disorders.  (+ info)

What happens in the 4th stage of ovarian cancer How long is life expectancy in this final stage?

My best friend is in stage 4 of ovarian cancer. She has hospice at her house. It seems to me, that she only has a few weeks left to live. Can she continue to live for 3 or 4 more months? Or does it depend of the individual person? Her cancer has spread to many of her organs.

What to expect when getting an ultrasound for ovarian cysts?

Every month, I get the worst cramps ever. They hurt so bad that I can't do anything expect for lay down. Nothing has helped either. My mom took me to the doctor and she put me on birth control. But, I have to go back and have an ultrasound down to check for ovarian cysts. What can I expect? Will the make my mom leave the room? Will I have do have something in my vagina? Please help :P
Thanks so much(:
I'm 15 almost 16.
----------

Don't panic. An ultrasound is all external. I have had them done, for similar reasons. I can walk you through the procedure step by step from my own experience.

With regards to your mother, if you need the support you can ask that your mother stay with you, I'm sure the technician will have absolutely no problem with that. If you'd prefer you can also ask that she leave the room.

When you arrive they will probably ask that you to change into a gown and lay down on the examining table. The technician will put lubricant on your pelvis, above your pubic area. Next they will use the ultrasound to scan your ovaries. Think of the device like a barcode scanner. There might be a bit of pressure so they can get a clear look at your ovaries, but certainly not anything painful.

For me, the most uncomfortable part of the procedure was was the feeling of the lubricating jelly. If you do experience any pain, just inform the technician. Over all, don't be worried, they won't be looking at your vagina at all.

Also make sure you drink plenty of water before your appointment and don't urinate, this helps with a more clear picture as well. That information should be provided to you by the office where you are having the exam done.  (+ info)
