What is the prognosis for a person diagnosed with pancreatic cancer?

I have a friend with whom I cannot communicate who has recently been diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas and I am wondering how long a minimum to maximum period of time he can survive this disease.
----------

Generally it is very poor. The only patients who survive are those whose disease was found incidentally. Less than 20% survive the first year, about 3% at 5 years. At stage 4 the median survival is 2-6 months.  (+ info)

I have shooting pin pain in my upper right abdominal area, is this a symptom of pancreatic cancer or disease?

I've had it for a long time and I am just wondering because I know that upper abdominal pain is a symptom for pancreatic cancer. My pain is SHOOTING PIN PAIN
I was wondering if this is a symptom for pancreatic cancer
Please Help
----------

. I suggest to you that you go to the doctors, if anything so that you can get piece of mind. My mom died of pancreatic cancer just last Wednesday and I think that if you ever have pain in the (bread box area) upper stomach, you should have it checked. Good luck and think positive, be brave and get it checked.  (+ info)

Is it possible to beat and permanently survive pancreatic cancer?

my friend's mother passed away recently from this horrible disease.

just want to know if the genuine prognosis is always as bad as I believe it is.
----------

People do survive it, but its considered to be the toughest cancer there is.

If caught early, while its still confined to the pancreas, the survival rate is around 20%. However, the problem is that very few people are diagnosed at that stage. It grows and spreads fast to to the surrounding organs, like the stomach and liver. Once that happens, only about 3 or 4 out of 100 survive it.

One thing about pancreatic cancer though, is that it rarley effects anyone under 50. Even Patrick Swazye who was late 50s was considered quite young for pancreatic cancer. The vast majority of people who get pancreatic cancer are elderly.  (+ info)

Is there any sure shot cure for pancreatic cancer other than surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy?

my mother is suffering from this disease.doctors have ruled out surgery.does anyone know about healers who heal and cure cancers by their supernatural powers?
----------

Please don't waste your money on any of these. Stay in the accepted medical field. If you want to, you can always consult another MD for a second opinion. If any of those other people say they can cure your mother with "healers" and using supernatural methods, don't believe them. If you want to try holistic methods as a way to feel better (note I didn't say they can cure- they can't), but they might be able to comfort her. I'd advise her to also be attending a religious group of her choosing for the same reason- support, esp. emotional. Maybe they will help her find peace & acceptance. Pancreatic cancer has NO cure- I'm sorry for that fact, but fear you may listen to people who will present you with "those they healed", who are part of the scam. Two celebrity stars who had pancreatic cancer and all the money in the world, had tried in all ways possible to find a cure. Michael Landon even tried some of the non-approved treatments, even going to Mexico for "coffee enemas". They didn't help. Patrick Swayze is still fighting to complete the first season of "The Beast" on TV, and if you look at his pictures in the tabloids you can see how this disease progresses, & he has tried everything medicine has to offer. Please don't spend money on unapproved treatments for your mother. Do whatever your MD tells you to do, get the treatments he advises, and please get hospice in when you can no longer tolerate the chemo & radiation, so they can make her comfortable. Honey, I'm sorry but this is a bad cancer with no cure yet.Love & care for your Mom for she needs YOU not other healers. Your love is the medicine she needs.  (+ info)

My husband has pancreatic cancer with liver metastatic?

We were told yesterday that the 12 weeks of chemo and 5 weeks of radiation are not working and the cancer has spread and he also has a spot on his lung now. Does anyone know the progression of this disease? What should I expect as the disease progresses?
----------

Oh, that is bad news. I am sorry you are having to go through this. He will get weaker as the cancer takes its toll. This happened to my grandmother. After it spread to her liver, then it spread to her brain. She got weaker and weaker, eventually sleeping a lot and spending all her time in bed. She died peacefully in her sleep. It was some comfort to know she wasn't feeling any pain. Spend as much time with him as you can. Make him comfortable and enjoy what you have left.  (+ info)

What make pancreatic cancer so different from other cancers?

From everything that I have read about pancreatic cancer it is uncurable. Breast cancer, leukemia, and other kinds of cancer can be cured/brought into remission and I was wondering what is so different about pancreatic cancer that does not allow this type of cancer to be cured/go into remission?
----------

Pancreatic cancer can be treated for cure under very specific conditions. It spreads by local invasion and via lymphatic channels. If it is caught early prior to invasion in the local vasculature, it can be treated for cure via several procedures - Whipple (pancreaticoduodenectomy), Total Pancreatectomy, or Distal Pancreatectomy. A major issue is catching it early. The symptoms of this disease early on are usually no symptoms, vague abdominal pain, mild discomfort. It is hard to detect. There is also no good screening that is cost effective. The reason for this is the cancer is not that common, and the tests available are not that cheap. This makes for a very inefficient screening method. The ones out there currently that can detect pancreatic cancer include CT scan of the abdomen and Endoscopic Ultrasound. Both of these tests have their own drawbacks. CT scan of the abdomen involves radiation that may set you up for a cancer. Endoscopic ultrasound requires sedation, a specialist (gastroenterologist), and has risks of perforation. Also the tests need to have a high degree of sensitivity (meaning that there is a high number of people who have the disease also test positive). Endoscopic ultrasound is being used more for symptomatic pancreatic cancer, but I do not know of studies used for screening the general population.

Another issue is it's proximity to other organs. It is near the duodenum, stomach, inferior vena cava, aorta. It is also a part of the biliary system and liver. It can spread to many important organs easily.

There is some increased hope on the horizon as new chemotherapy drugs are being developed. Dr. Vickers at the University of Minnesota is doing clinical trials on a new medication that will hopefully help with treating the disease.  (+ info)

What are some cancer diet-friendly meals for my neighbor with pancreatic cancer?

My neighbor has pancreatic cancer. Both she and her husband are both elderly and my husband and I want to help them with their upcoming family dinner to celebrate their son's engagement. I understand a cancer patient's palate can be extra-sensitive and she has talked to me about the chemo-induced nausea she deals with daily so I want to make sure it best meets her needs. From those with experience, what would you recommend we make for them?

We're looking for entree and dessert ideas.
Thank you!
----------

For Entree:
Fresh green salad using balsamic vinegar/olive oil

For dessert:
Make smoothies. Mix together organic blueberries with apple, grape, cranberry, or guava juice—anything but orange juice. Citrus fruits can contribute to or exacerbate mouth sores, and you’ll want to do everything you can to avoid those. Throw in a banana and some plain yogurt.  (+ info)

What is the correct and incorrect mechanism of pancreatic cancer?

What does this actually mean? I tried to research the
"mechanisms" of pancreatic cancer, but I couldn't find anything. Please help :)
----------

Is this a multiple choice question? I don’t really know what they want, but mechanism means the process to achieve an end. So I read it as meaning the correct and incorrect treatment, but treating cancer is not that cut and dried.  (+ info)
