You need to do specific exercises to strengthen the muscles in your leg. Usually these exercises are given to you by your physical therapist.  (+ info)

what other options do i have apart from physio therapy for a dislocation of a patellar?

i have had a problem on my knees for quite a while now, about 3 years, they both dislocated every other day and are very painful i am only 18 years old, i have had lateral releases on both of them before but they have both snapped. i have been waiting for about 8 months now for any news from the hospital and i don't know what else i can do. i can not keep going on like this. i also can not work and i can not claim for any disability allowances and i need to know what i can get on some form of income as i can not get sick pay.

Slight knee dislocation, should i go to the doctor?

Hi, my kneecap slides slightly outside of the groove it's supposed to. I was running for 2 hours the other day, and my knee was completely normal, and then the next day it hurt a little bit to bend my knee and to walk down stairs. It clicks when I bend it, and I looked it up and I think I have a mild patellar subluxation or dislocation...something like that. Anyway, should I go to the doctor?
----------

I would go to your doctor and request some physical therapy. If this doesn't help then I would go to an orthopedist and let them reevaluate your knee and see what to do next.

What is this treatment for the patellar tendon called?

I went to the doctor today and he numbed my patellar tendon to see if that reduced the pain and he said if that worked then they could do some kind of steroid therapy to help fix that. However it was not just steroid shots it was some other kind of therapy and I cannot remember the name of it. Does anyone out there know?

Thanks!

You need to re-train the quad muscles to help the biomechanics of the patella. Recommend you see a Physical Therapist to learn how to do it right.  (+ info)

What is the possibilty of a 2nd shoulder dislocation?

I dislocated my shoulder while playing hockey. While laying down on a stretcher, it popped back in. I am willing to do anything the doc/therapist says because I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. I will also start playing non-checking hockey. I am wondering, what is the possibility of a second dislocation? I am 20 1/2 by the way.

I did a report on this last year. The following is a summary of pertinent research findings:

Hovelius et al.
For patients aged 12-22 who were treated with a sling: 47% had re-dislocated by 2 years later. By 5 year follow-up 55% had had at least 2 dislocations since the initial one and 28% had undergone surgery for instability. 34% had had surgery by 10 year follow-up. Recurrence not affected by sex, type of trauma, or activity level.

Kirkley et al.
40 skeletally mature patients under age 30 with first time shoulder dislocations were treated either with a sling or surgery. After 32 months 47% of the non-surgical patients had had recurrences compared to 15.9% of the surgical ones. Numbers were the same after 79 months.

Other studies showed similar results. Essentially, research shows a high incidence of recurrence. This in one case where young age actually works against you.  (+ info)
