What is more pain full, a fracture or a dislocation?

I can dislocate very easily and in the last 2 months i have dislocated both my knees and my thumb, also in the last year i have fractured my hand, wrist, foot and ankle.A few times i have fractured and dislocated at the same time and when doing this all i feel is pain and i would like to know what is causing most of the pain, the dislocation or the fracture. If you know because you are either a doctor or have had similare experiences could you please tell me as i would really like to know!
----------

i think it would be very dependent on where both the fracture and dislocation occur. and what other structures are damaged in the process. fractures can damage a lot of the surrounding soft tissue and pierce the skin (compound fracture). a dislocation would also hurt a very large amount as well and soft tissue - ligaments, tendons and muscles are stretched and torn.

as far as which causes more pain when you have both at the same time it doesn't really work like that. the brain prioritises new signals over repeating ones - thats why staying still can help. also holding someones hand/rubbing it can reduce pain. the new signals can, to use a cliché, drown out the signals of pain.

distraction itself is a very powerful analgesic as the brain filters more pain signals out. morphine also instructs the brain to filter more aggressively.

What is the quickest way to get rid of patellar tendinitis?

I've had it for five months and it isn't getting better. Is there any way to get rid of it completely?
----------

See your health care provider as soon as possible. Runner's knee (patellofemoral stress syndrome) is a condition in which the kneecap (patella) rubs roughly against the end of the thighbone (femur) when the knee moves. Exercises or surgery is the quickest way to alleviate the pain. Other exercises, such as riding a bicycle (if not painful), rowing, and swimming, can be continued to maintain physical fitness.
Commercially available arch support placed in both exercise and street shoes may help.
Sometimes, shoes inserts have to be custom-made. Best of luck.  (+ info)

How can you tell if your patellar tendon is ruptured?

I have pain and a palpable defect on the tendon, however I can extend my knee fully and bear weight on the affected leg. How do I know if it is ruptured? What can I do if it is?
----------

Injury or over use of a joint or tendon can result in pain redness, heat and inflammation of the bursa, a condition known as bursitis which often develops quickly, over just a few days. Apply ice or cold packs for 10 minute periods, one an hour or as often as you can for 48 hours. Continue applying ice (15 to 20 minutes, 3 times a day) as long as it relieves the pain. Call you doctor if you have signs of damage to the nerves or blood vessels, such as numbness, tingling, a pin-and-needles sensation below the injury, or pale or bluish skin. If your knee is red , hot swollen, or painful to touch. If you are limping, or if pain does not improve within 2 days. For more information go to wwwwebmd.com.  (+ info)

What is the difference between a patellar tendon and an ACL?

i know that they are in the knee, but what is the difference?
----------

Simple

Patellar tendon is a tendon meaning it connects bone to muscle. It connects the kneecap to the leg muscle. It controls the movement of the kneecap. If it's torn, you will probably need surgery. It can also get inflamed known as tendinitis.

The ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament is a ligament meaning it connects bone to bone. It connects the tibia (shin bone) to the femur (thigh bone). It's more commonly torn than the patella tendon and is usually torn in sports such as soccer or football where there are tackles, rapid stops, and changes in direction. If it's torn, you will also need surgery. Sprains to the ACL are common. It controls the movement of the shin bone in comparison to the femur so it doesn't shift too much down.

How can i get rid of patellar tendonitis?

i play football and after each practice, or when i play in the park my patella tendon hurts. My therapist said it was pateller tendonitis. I checked out a few websites, alot said ultrasound and these special herbs
----------

while that was a good description by the RN, let me help you out. patellar tendonitis might not mean that there was a direct injury to the knee, it may have also been overuse and poor warm-up routine prior to your activity. at this point, she's right with why you're PT didn't help you out. At least tell them to ask your referrer (pcp, ortho doc, whomever) to add an isometric quads strengthening program as well so they're allowed to help in that area. include VMO's, strengthening, conditioning, and HEPs. this will help with your rehab process. also, while heat is a good source of blood circulation, tenonitis is inflammation. why send blood to that region to make it swell more? if anything, adding ice will aid in inflammation (as well as NSAIDs like the RN mentioned). so ice, heat, ice, heat. a knee sleeve with patella support can help. so at this point, modify your activities for 4-6 weeks, no heavy loading/impacting on the knees. physical therapy should help with the added program, and ice/heat (give up the heat after a day or two and strictly do icing - make sure you dont ice directly to skin as it will give you frost-bite symptoms), and careful NSAID use. thanks to the RN for a good description of things.

no ultrasound, or herbs needed. unless its the herbs that...well, nevermind. :-)  (+ info)

What exactly is a dislocation of a joint?

I dislocated a finger but I am just curious to what the means(besides it popping out of place) Did the tendons tear? Ligaments? thanks.
----------

Dislocation just means that the joint came apart a little - or a lot. The tendons will stretch pretty far, so they will probably be OK. If you'd torn them I bet you'd know. Once you pop the joint back to where it's supposed to be ice it good - with real ice. 20 minutes on/20 minutes off. And it should stop hurting in a couple days.

If you have a chiropractor, he/she can put one of those fingers back in with no problem. It's sometimes hard to do it yourself as you need both hands.   (+ info)

What is High Grade Patellar Chrondromalacia with Full Thickness Cartilage Defect?

I damage my knee and receive an MRI. The Dr told me it was minimal and no worries, to go to PT for them to strengthen my quads. I went to PT and the wall squats are causing me to now feel grating in my knee and popping. The pain is increasingly worse. Am I seeing the correct people?
----------

I also suffered from patellar chondromalacia and I know from experience that it's a really painful condition. Chondromalacia is the softening of the articular cartilage in your knee. When I was rehabbing, my ATC had be doing wall squats that REALLY irritated my knee. Squatting puts a lot of stress on your patellar tendon and cartilage. You should be getting physical therapy, but the physical therapy should not be putting you in acute pain. If the pain is sharp, tell your PT that squats really irritate your knee. He/she should adapt your PT regimen to continue strengthening your muscles around the joint, but maybe you need to slow down a little.  (+ info)

How do I care for an instantaneous knee dislocation?

I was playing basketball and while running I landed on my knee funny and it popped in and out of its socket for a millisecond. It didn't hurt at all and I have decent range of motion.

I have been icing it and I elevated it to avoid swelling. Otherwise, is there anything else I should do? It's definitely straight and doesn't hurt, and I don't need x-rays or anything because it's so minor.
----------

If your ROM is good, and there is no pain associated -- continue with your Icing for several hours, elevate, and restrict the motion for the rest of the day. Tomorrow resume normal range of motion.. but don't play any sports, etc. Let the tissues heal from the possible dislocation damage - -which would be stretching , micro tears of ligaments, and so on.

Sounds like you've got it under control --

If pain develops consult a physician.. if swelling lasts more than 24-48hours consult a physican. If you notice hypermobility in the patella, you guessed it, consult an M.D.  (+ info)

How to tell if you have a dislocation hip/leg?

After an car accident someone in the car got hurt. About 20 doctors have no idea whats wrong.

Symptoms include: Severe pain in hip to back thigh, foot/leg pointing outward, leg is weak/ severe constant pain (resting or walking). Short leg, one doctor concluded she has Sciatica.

Spine is clean nothing noticeable and back does not hurt.

Is it possible this person has a dislocation in her hip/leg?
(All the doctors have paying more attention to the spine and never looked at her leg.)
----------

Sounds like a nerve entrapment, probably within the hip, due to inflammation. Best of Luck  (+ info)

What is the best way to tape a ring finger to prevent dislocation?

Ok, I play football and I dislocated my finger. Thinking it was just a jam and that it would get better, I continued playing and it got worse. So in the end, I had to get surgery to realign the top joint of my ring finger. I get the pin out this week. I am looking for the best way to tape my finger to help prevent it from happening again. A thorough explanation would be appreciated. Thanks
