Acetone is sometimes produced in pathological conditions such as diabetes or when following extreme dieting?

approaches.

true or false?
----------

That's true. Acetone is one of a number of ketones that come about due to the break down of fat and muscle tissue.

In diabetes, glucose can not be used by the muscles to make energy. The body begins to experience 'starvation' as you need glucose as the predominant source of 'food' to stay alive. To combat this lack of 'food' it breaks down fat and muscle tissue which, in turn, causes the release of ketones ... acetone being the one that you can often smell on the breath of the sufferer. In diabetic patients, it's just one more step ... to the point of ketoacidosis ... where the blood becomes acidic and great damage is, or can be, caused to a number of internal organs.

People who follow extreme dieting techniques often get to the stage of ketosis ... the step before ketoacidosis. This, in itself, is a recognised [recognized] way of losing weight, though many doctors consider it not such a healthy thing to do. This is the basis of such diets as the Atkins Diet, and other such dietary systems.

The acetone on the breath is also noticed in countries where starvation is rife, such as some of the African nations, etc.  (+ info)

enlist the pathological conditions responsible for high levels of serum amylase?

An amylase is an enzyme that breaks starch down into sugar. Amylase is present in human saliva, where it begins the chemical process of digestion. Foods that contain much starch but little sugar, such as rice and potato, taste slightly sweet as they are chewed because amylase turns some of their starch into sugar in the mouth. The pancreas also makes amylase (alpha amylase) to break down dietary starch into di- and trisaccharides which are converted by other enzymes to glucose to supply the body with energy.
Increased plasma levels in humans are found in:
* Salivary trauma (including anaesthetic intubation).
* Mumps — due to inflammation of the salivary glands.
* Pancreatitis — because of damage to the cells that produce amylase.
* Renal failure — due to reduced excretion.
Total amylase readings of over 10X the upper limit of normal (ULN) are suggestive of pancreatitis. 5-10x times the ULN may indicate ileus or duodenal disease or renal failure, and lower elevations are commonly found in salivary gland disease.(Wikipedia)
Increased amylase levels may indicate:
* Acute pancreatitis
* Cancer of the pancreas, ovaries, or lungs
* Cholecystitis
* Gallbladder attack resulting from disease
* Infection of the salivary glands (such as mumps) or an obstruction
* Intestinal obstruction
* Macroamylasemia
* Pancreatic or bile duct obstruction
* Perforated ulcer
* Tubal pregnancy (may be ruptured)
* Viral gastroenteritis

I think my child has PDA Pathological Demand Avoidence syndrome?

I have researched a number of conditions to explain my childs behavior, this condition seems exactly right. Has anyone got experience of this condition? I want to go and ask the doctor if my child has it, and if theres anyting they can do, but it's quite unheard of and i don't want to look like a hypochondriac or put my child through any tests unnecessarily. Any ideas?
----------

I have a child who is diagnosed with pathological demand avoidance and asperger syndrome. The behaviours from the two conditions are quite different but do overlap. Living with a child with PDA can be a nightmare and really frustrating but at times it can be very rewarding. My daughter was diagnosed at the Elizabeth Newson centre in Nottingham where they specialize in this condition and how to support the child afterwards. To get a child diagnosed is quite difficult as some Primary Care Trusts will not recognise the diagnosis. You should first go to your GP and ask him for a referall to a clinical psychologist who will be better able to help you. Also you may have to wait ages for an appointment as these services tend to be very over-subscribed. Try the National Autistic Society website for more information. Good luck.  (+ info)

How to cure a pathological liar in an effective way?

A 10 year old girl found to be a pathological liar. What could be done better to her?
----------

EACH time you KNOW she's lying say.."is that a lie or the truth?...and that REALLY happened?" After enough times she'll catch on and maybe catch herself.. Remember...there are PATHOLOGICAL liars (were it's a sickness), and there are HABITUAL liars, (lying out of habit)  (+ info)

In the lungs, how does anatomical dead space relate to residual volume?

In the lungs, how does anatomical dead space relate to residual volume?
----------

There is no relation ... Anatomical dead space is the gas in the conducting areas of the respiratory system, such as the mouth and trachea, where air does not come into contact with the alveoli of the lungs (does not participate in gas exchange). Residual Volume is the amount of air that stays in the lungs after a maximal exhalation. It is generally an indicator of "gas trapped" at the alveolar level, when elevated.

Anatomic dead space is estimated to be 1ml/lb lean body weight, which is approx. 25 to 33% o Tidal Volume. Where as RV is approximately 1.2 liters, and is based on height, age, and ethnicity through predicted equations.  (+ info)

What are some conditions that could lead a person to not being able to wear contacts?

What are some conditions that could lead a person to not being able to wear contacts? (Yes, eye conditions obviously.) Needed for research for a story; any reason will really do, as long as this condition still allows the person in question to wear glasses.

Thanks!
