Is a niacin flush good for any conditions?

Those familiar with niacin will know it causes a powerful "flushing" reaction, a warm, tingly, sometimes very itchy sensation all over much of the body if you take a large enough dose, due to the niacin dilating the capillaries. Aside from what niacin is good for(lowering cholesterol, among other things), is the flush good for any conditions? I have heard some people recommend it for dry skin, since it will increase circulation to the skin due to the dilating of the capillaries. Anyone know anything about this?
----------

One of my guru's who was a Dr. Rammurit S. Mishra, M.D.(he was a published author)said that the flush indiciates that the niacin is reacting with your anatomophysiology at its optimum when the flush occurrs.

For a number of years(way back when) I was on a medically prescribed dosage of 9 grms.(1,000 mlgs.) and the same for Vit.-C daily for a few years; the term for this type of medical modality is popularly known as "Mega-Vitamins", and is clinically, professionally referred to as "Orthomolecular Medicine - here's a link:

http://www.orthomed.org/

My understanding is that an equal amount of Vit.-C should be taken with that of the Niacin. There is a form of Vit.-B-3(Niacin=Vit.-B-3 essentitally)termed Niacinimide, biochemically which does not produce that flush and is suppossedly equally as effective as the Niacin.

I would caution you against the unprescribed usage of Niacin without medical supervision; as I recall, it can be harmful to the kidneys if not taken with an equal amount of Vit.-C.

Sorry couldn't answer your specific question - "is the flush good for any conditions" - but thought the above comments and link might be helpful.

TAKE CARE, and good luck,

What conditions or diseases make you thirsty quickly?

I know diabetes makes you thirsty quickly, but what else makes you thirsty quickly. Any conditions or diseases that have a symptom of increased thirst? Thanks

Are you vegetarian?? If you are, do you supplement with a multi B complex?? vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is part of that complex and a deficiency in it will cause nausea and vomiting, dry mouth so bad that no amount of water will resolve it,excessive urination and night sweats and muscle cramps... it will also contribute to night muscle spasms, leg cramps, hand numbness ..... vitamin B6 is essential for the production of magnesium and hydrochloric acid in our bodies and must be present for the production of red blood cells and antibodies......... so without it you would be suffering from all the symptoms of iron deficiency anemia too like fatigue and exhaustion, dizzy spells, excessive feelings of being cold, nasty headaches, paleness of skin .... along with having other digestive issues such as bloating and cramping, constipation etc....eat more foods rich in B6 such as lean meats, fresh fish, cantaloupe, cabbage, unsulphured organic blackstrap molasses, unmilled brown rice, eggs and oats.

Buy yourself a multi B complex containing all the B's ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 and folate etc... as they all work best as a group.... a liquid supplement would be the easiest to assimilate for your body.

Don't buy any of the B complex individually but rather as a whole complex unless specifically instructed to do so by a nutritionally oriented physician or naturopath.

The B complex of vitamins is a water soluble complex and as such our bodies can neither produce nor store them.... therefore we need to ingest them on a daily basis or suffer the stress related side affects.

Things that will rob you of your precious supplies of B vitamins are stress, antidepressants, antibiotics, laxatives and diuretics, otc cold and flu meds, alcohol, eating too much tinned food or protein or processed sugar, eating too much frozen fruits and vegies, sodas, pop and soft drinks ..... caffeinated drinks such as coffee and tea will also rob you of your B vitamins.

take care of you

peace baby

Why are african american men often suseptible to skin conditions on the back of their heads?

I work in downtown Chicago and meet alot of people everyday. I see many people, including african americans and I notice that there seems to be a significant amount of black men that have skin conditions on the back of their heads, mostly above the neck area. It is either a discoloration, boils, scarring, or lesions. Is there a reason I see this alot with african american men and not in other races?

im not racist; this is a legitamate question. i never see it so much with other races. Im just curious.
----------

The skin condition that you concern yourself with has to do a combination of a few things amongst African American men. The first one is the way that they get their hair cut. It is usually cut very close to the skin. The type of oil that they put in their hair to make it manageable. The grade and texture of the hair and finally dirt and sweat. Now combine all of this together and this what you have. Most African American males use some type of oil in their hair to make it look nice. What this also does in the process is close the pores on the scalp and around the neck area so now the scalp can not breathe and some of the hair follicles are now trapped under the skin. The next process is the cutting of the hair. This will make the hair curl under the skin causing the small bumps which you generally see. There is also the outside factor that the barber's clippers may not be at their cleanest. If a man was to place a hot rag on that area to open the pores and not get his hair cut so short and change the oil that he uses. He will see that his neck start to look better. He can also use some rubbing alcohol to help dry up the oil which is trapped under his skin.  (+ info)

Why would a doctor make a teen girl get a thyroid ultrasound?? What thyroid conditions are there?

Why would a doctor make a teen get a thyroid ultrasound? What thyroid conditions are there?
The doctor believes that a 17 year old has a lump in her throat.
What could show up in an ultrasound?
What conditions result from thyroid problems?
----------

The lump in the throat could be an enlarged thyroid gland. The ultrasound will see if that's the case. If a thyroid gland is enlarged, then it's probably not working right. It might be an autoimmune condition, where the immune system attacks the thyroid, so the thyroid has to work much harder to produce the correct amount of hormone. If that is the case, they you can take thyroid hormone orally, no problem.

If one's thyroid gland is not producing enough, then you're hypothyroid, and likely will be tired, sluggish, gain weight, have weak nails, dry skin, limp hair.

If one's thyroid gland is producing too much, then you're hyperthyroid, and likely will have heart palpitations and be nervous, and perhaps lose weight.

Thyroid problems are very common, and very easy to fix.  (+ info)

Tips and advices on keeping the face and heel in good conditions?

What all should i apply to keep my skin(face) in good conditions and my heel's pain and it has rough surface how to make it soft and good.
----------

hi there

For your face first of all, you have to keep it clean by using special face soap according to your skin type. try to wash your face at least 3 times a day. Secondly, put on some kind of masks frequently.
" Cucumber& honey are good - you will notice the diffirences if you use them twice a week"
" use fresh potato for your eyes area"
" use sun protection"

For your heels, keep it clean by washing them as mush as you can - I wash my feet when ever I go out - do massage if you have the massage machine for feets, for the rough surface use "vasline for heels" apply a layer and massage the area then scrap it with the black stone. also it is good if u uses creams and wear scoks over the night.

thats what I do myself,,, bye :)  (+ info)

I hurt my anatomical snuff box tendon, how do i treat it until i get my ultrasound in a few days?

I hurt my anatomical snuff box tendon, but have to wait for 3 days to get the ultrasound but the doctor thought i'd get it right away so didn't tell me how to care for it. What should I do until monday? Thanks
----------

It is difficult to know what the doctor would have wanted. I don't know the details of the injury or what they would be looking for with ultrasound. That all being said you can always play it safe by going with the most conservative care which would be immobilization.   (+ info)
