Why are women experts on penile anatomy?
I chose to become educated on circumcision for several reasons. For one thing, I am a mother and wife. My son and my husband are both uncircumcised. I kind of feel that it is my "duty" to protect and defend the men in my life, and to stand up for the rights of men and women in this country.

Also, I am a human rights activist. Say what you will, but I believe that on a core level, male circumcision is a human rights violation. I can't believe that, this is how we greet a two day old infant into this world!! Just because they cannot speak doesn't mean that they do not feel pain. How exactly would you know what they feel and don't feel?? And why is it that nobody seems to care whether or not the pain is unbearable... citing some stupid notion that "they won't remember it anyway." Maybe, just maybe, buried deep in their subconscious mind, they DO remember (because the subconscious never forgets).

Just as people are outraged at the idea of female genital mutilation (or female circumcision), I am outraged that we live in a country where it is somehow okay to mutilate boys penises for cosmetic purposes. Do you know, that in cultures where female genital mutilation is practiced, the women who have had this done to them most often DEFEND what has been done to them, and readily offer up their daughters to undergo the procedure as well?? Do you think that makes it okay, because they cannot see that it isn't?? I don't think so.

Several years ago, when I was about 22 years old, I read a book titled "The Great Cosmic Mother : Rediscovering The Religion of the Earth" by Sjoo/Mor. This is book is a wonderful piece of feminist literature that details the history of the oppression of women for the past 6,000+ years. Sexuality, of course, is linked to the Goddess (or feminine aspect) and all attempts to destroy or interfere with human sexuality (typically made by male dominated religions) are seen as an assault on the mother goddess.... e.g. an assault on women.

I believe, that circumcision is also a WOMEN's issue. If you assault a man's sexuality, you are assaulting the aspect of him that is able to connect with women and with his own "female aspect" (e.g. his anima). This is not to say that a circumcised man cannot connect with women, just that he may have a harder time doing so (both physically and psychologically, since these are so deeply intertwined) without first dealing with the pain inflicted on his own "inner female" at birth.

Before you laugh and say that these ideas are ridiculous... take a good look at the religions that circumcise. What are their central beliefs about the roles of women? About the shared roles of women and men? I'm not talking about watered down, modern versions of these religions, I am talking about their CORE beliefs.

Feminism is not just about protecting women. It is about protecting what is sacred, normal, and natural. IMHO, feminism and humanism are one in the same.

I think that, if you do a little bit of research, you will learn WHY this issue is important to both women and men. More importantly, you will learn that this is a HUMAN issue, because it is male HUMANS that are being violated by this procedure on an hourly basis.  (+ info)
