How long does a root canal due to an abscess take to heal?

I recently had a dental abscess so I went to my dentist on Thursday, who performed a root canal, I was prescribed a small amount of amoxicillin to be taken afterwards. The pain has not subsided however, it's still constantly there and I'm having to take a fair amount of painkillers each day along with using clove oil to try and stop the pain.

How long should it normally take to heal? Should I go back to the dentist first thing Monday? Any other advice?

I just had one and it is not that bad...

The worst part for me was getting the numbing shot. The whole procedure will take at least an hour.

Have your dad ask for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and the dentist will do that... It helps you relax.

It hurt for a couple of days afterwards but prescription strength ibuprofen took care of that for me.

What exactly causes an abscess after surgery?

I had a recent hysterectomy and started running a fever four days after returning home. A CT scan showed a small abscess (about an inch) and I am responding to antibiotics after another stay in the hospital, so they are not going to do surgery or a needle aspiration. How does this happen?

How quickly does an abscess spread/become dangerous?

Last Thursday I noticed a red spot about a quarter inch long on my breast. It had a raw spot in the middle. I didn't think much about it because it was small, but I wondered where I'd got it. About twelve hours later there were two other open spots and the red had radiated out. Now I'd say it's a circle of pink about one inch across with a bright red spot and the three sores in the middle. It hasn't really got worse, but it hasn't got better, and tonight I noticed a puffy pouch of skin directly beneath it. The pouch isn't discoloured.
I don't know if it is an abscess, and I don't want to freak out too soon and go to the doctor for nothing. But I can't find any concrete info on abscesses. How quickly do they become dangerous? And does this sound like an abscess?
There is no pain, unless it is jabbed forcefully. The only other pain was when the spots first appeared, and they only stung when touched.

An abscess can be dangerous if not looked at by a doctor. This is obviously new. I would at least consult a pharmacy for an over the counter ointment and if that doesn't help, see a doctor.  (+ info)

How quickly can a tooth abscess become a risk?

A few years ago, I got a root canal but I did not get it capped. Starting yesterday, I started having a faint kind of sweet taste in my mouth and the tooth I had the procedure done on feels kind of "stiff." I don't have bad breath just the faint toothy sweet taste.

I'm in an MBA program that has me busy for 12 hours a day so I probably won't be able to get in to see a dentist for about a week or so. Is this a risk? Is this even an abscess? Thanks in advance!
----------

Any dental abscess should be treated seriously. If what I remember is correct, there is an increased risk of spreading the infection to your heart faster because you have no valves in any veins in your head/neck. So the the bacteria can travel in blood much faster. They just had documentation of a child dying from an untreated dental abscess. In our clinic, we will not even risk elective dental work on someone with an abscess for fear that we might spread the infection. Get a quick dental visit, when you get a chance and put your mind at ease =)  (+ info)

Do I have to worry about a tooth abscess that has drained?

I have a badly chipped, dead tooth and limited funds for a root canal, so I have been putting it off.

I say it is "dead" because there is no pain.

A few hours ago, it started to throb a little, so I checked my gum in the mirror and saw a pointing abscess. I put my finger on it to see how hard it was, and it burst with a small amount of bleeding.

Now, I know I have to see the dentist, but I am concerned more about the infection than the tooth. Since the abscess has drained, do I need to see the dentist tomorrow? Or can I wait till the end of the month when my check comes in?
----------

You need to see a dentist as soon as possible, before they can do a root canal (assuming that one is possible) you will need to be on a course of antibiotics. If you start the meds then you will be ready for the root canal when your cheque comes in.

A draining abscess will give you really bad breath.

Ignoring an infection anywhere in your body can lead to septicemia (blood poisoning) which ultimately can lead to death. Get it fixed.  (+ info)

How do your know when to get help for a tooth abscess?

One of my back teeth had some gross-smelling fluid leaking from the gum area. I think it may have been an abscess, but it has mostly subsided now. Reading about heart attacks caused by tooth abscesses, though, I'm freaked out. So when do you know when an abscess is serious?

An abscess is a NEED HELP issue, there is no when, you have one, seek IMMEDIATE attention before your jaw rots out. Crap, go to the dentist.  (+ info)

How can I permanently remove an abscess?

I have an abscess in the lobule of my right ear. I have had 2 before, which I squeezed out, but this is the 3rd one and it's almost ready to come out. Is there any way to permanently kill the infection.

I took antibiotic tablets for the first removal, which was recommended by a doctor, but it didn't work. I'm thinking of killing the infection at the source with a cream. Any suggestions?
----------

An abscess will often keep coming back if not completely removed. This is often done by breaking up the capsule of the abscess. The body will do the rest. You can't do this.

You can try the cream, but it may still come back.  (+ info)

How long will it take an abscess tooth to get re-infected?

Dentist told me that mine tooth was trying to abscess and the infection was what caused it to hurt. I finish taking my antibiotic on December 24. How long do I have to make an appointment before it gets infected again. I asked because the dentist office has been closed because of the Holiday.

Has anyone ever had an infant develop an abscess on their bottom?

My 6 month old son has an abscess that was not cured through antibiotics. We are going in the morning to see a surgeon who will have to put him under and then drain it. I am very nervous about my baby going under anesthesia and then caring for the wound post op. And to top it off we are moving across the country on Friday.
----------

Oh honey i am so sorry you are going through this, just make sure that when you get moved you find a doctor the first chance you get and get him in just to make sure he doing ok. Also I would do a mapquest and map our doctors and er room just incase he gets worse or something happens. Bring lots of comfort things in the car for him. They will be very carefull with the anesthesia so dont worry about that, he should be in and out very quickly. Just make sure that you are the first thing he see's when he wakes up. Good luck.  (+ info)
