what is the neurological differences between vegetative state&Locked in syndrome?

some bedridden patient either in vegetative state or locked in status, but what is the neurological differences between 2 terms.
----------

Individuals with locked in syndrome are conscious and can think and reason, but are unable to speak or move.
You may be able to communicate with this person by means of eye blinks. You can start with, saying to the patient. Can You hear me? Blink twice for Yes. If the patient responds then you can go on to Blink once for No, and in this way carry on a limited conversation.
Patients with locked in status, in rare cases may regain certain functions.
Be supportive, tell patient you care about him/her. Read to patient, talk to patient, as you would to any other friend.in normal conversation, you do not have to speak louder, or slower.

Cure or treatment for Vegetative State?

My mother is 41 years old and has been in a vegetative state for 3 months now due to random oxygen deprivation. Doctors have no idea what caused her to stop breathing. The only treatment I know of is still in clinical trials- Zolpidem or Ambien (the sleeping pill). We will be attempting this trial next month, but if it doesn't work what else can we do or try? I have been doing as much research as I can think of. I am desperate. Please help if you know. Anything is appreciated.
----------

This may not be very helpful, but I have read about music with lyrics that the patient likes being played over expended periods to people in comas.

I don't recall what positive effects were claimed, but if I were you I would have wanted me to tell what I remembered.

Best wishes.  (+ info)

Do vegetarians go into a vegetative state within 20 years?

Well that medical term had to come from somewhere...
----------

In the same way that meat eaters become fear, as you are what you eat.  (+ info)

Can you come back to life from a vegetative state?

Please answer!
----------

Once the brain has ceased to function I will say no you cannot.
However as long as there is brain activity going on you can be comotose and recover to some extent usually requiring extensive physio and socio therapy.  (+ info)

ethics of individuals in a vegetative state?

i am writing a essay for my english class and i would like feedback on the ethics of individuals in a vegetative state. For example, whether or not they should be taken off of life support or kept on life support. Also, should the choice be left up to the family members or should the doctors be able to decide what is best? thanks for the help!!!
----------

The person should let family and friends know what they want so if something happens they can tell the doctors. My family knows my wishes.  (+ info)

Is vegetative state part of the coma process and does anyone get better in this state? Responsive to things.?

Apparently he just came out of coma a week ago but he has been responding to me for a while. How do they know he's not still in a coma? He puckers when I tell him to for a kiss. He crys when I talk about accident or grandson he was close to. He looks pissed and scared when I talk of his motorcycle accident. I just don't understand and hoping that with time, he will be more like himself. Still no movement in lower extremeties. On EEG's they show that it looks like brain is normal but not sure if there could be something else wrong since he isn't responding the way the want him to. Is vegetative state a part of coming out of a coma and will he progress? He did have spinal cord injury but neck back together and I have asked for them to do more testing to see if anything has changed with spinal cord since they put his neck back together.
----------

If there was a head injury you can see many types of reactions. It can be a long process & you may not know for awhile just how the recovery will go.  (+ info)

how can i help my friend cope, his mom is in a vegetative state in the hospital?

what makes it especially worse is that it came out of no where, they went to the hospital told him she had a brain tumor and so they operated immediately. She dint wake up from the operation and she may be brain dead. Right now she is relying on life support, by the way he is 16 and so am i

Conscious in a Persistant Vegetative State?

A recent study has shown that some people who are in a Persistant Vegetative State are still conscious and able to form coherent thought. This potentially adds a new dimension to discussions about euthanasia.

Personally it scares the willies off me to think that I could be kept alive fully aware of my surroundings yet trapped in my own body, unable to express myself to those around me.

What are other peoples thoughts on this new revelation?

I saw that on the news too. Sounds creepy to realize that if a person's in a coma that they really want to try to communicate but can't. My sister and I disagree completely on this. If I go into a coma and the doctors believe it's gonna be a longterm thing, I don't want feeding tubes or anything like that. Just let me go. My sister on the other hand wants to be kept alive by any artificial means necessary for as long as it takes her to wake up. I don't want to be asleep for 20 years then wake up with no quality of life. But that's just me. If someone else wants to be kept alive, I respect that.  (+ info)

Do 'vegetables' wake up with any knowledge that they were in that state?

Well the ones that do get out of it of course, I'm referring to PVS(persistent vegetative state). And is there evidence that their mind was active while in that state?
----------

I saw on t.v. quite some time ago, where this woman was basically in a vegetative state. I can't remember exactly for how long, but it was a long time. The doctors basically said she had no brain activity and was braindead. She did eventually come out of that comatose state. She lived, and was apparently fine...but described that she could hear the people suggesting to take her off from life support and she couldn't say anything to stop them or tell them that she was indeed alive.

Just as a side note, though it is not quite relevant: Recently in the news...a woman's brain was dead/inactive for about 18 hours. She shocked the doctors by coming back to life.  (+ info)

Does this really mean "vegetative state"?

My aunt had a heart attack and is now in the hospital.
About 3 days after the heart attack the doctor was testing her for any responses and when he pinched her collar bone she made a face in reaction to the pain but he said she was in a vegetative state. Is this correct? They have intibated her and the nurse said she has to give her something to calm her down because my aunt simply won't let her change the tube and do what she needs to do for her. Also, she was biting on the tube and when her daughter-in-law told her not to bite it she stopped.
Is this really a person in a vegetative state?
----------

NO!!!!!my grandfather recently had heart surgery..i dint know what drugs they put him on, but this story sounds exactly like his. he was out for about 2 months. when i would talk in his ear, he would kick his feet. he grabbed out when they were changing the tubes and he would mumble sometimes. my grandmother and aunt were fighting the doctors allot and slowly he started to come out of it.
during his recovery, his mind was relay messes up too. he would tell me about his "trips" to Mahobey (where ever that is) and he told me how the water there is crystal clear, and it was the best water he ever tasted. like i said he was put on ALLOT of drugs during his time in the hospital, and if you ask me, he was acting allot like someone who just got home form the Vietnam war. .....I DON'T KNOW WHAT DRUGS HE WAS PUT ON BUT IT SOUND TO ME LIKE YOUR AUNT WAS PUT ON THE SAME DRUGS!  (+ info)
