My gums are swollen and hurt extremely bad. At the moment I have a cold sore and viral pharyngitis. Normal?

I've had the cold sore for four days and the viral pharyngitis for three. Never had either before, so I have no idea what's going on.
----------

Others have addressed your gums. I agree that you need to see a dentist about your gums.

I don't think the cold sore is related, other than a flare up of cold sores is common if you are stressed, or if you are ill or recovering from an illness.

Many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, and never have a flare up of cold sores. We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, and children pick it up easily as they often share food and drinks, and may be less concerned about hand washing and hygiene. Cold sores can be transmitted even when the person does not have a cold sore, though it is less likely to happen then.

There is no over-the-counter medication or home remedy that cures cold sores. Only time will take care of that. But there is a good prescription medication for cold sores. It will make them go away much faster, and as a result of taking this medication you will have far fewer outbreaks of cold sores.

The absolute best treatment for cold sores is a prescription medication in pill form called Valtrex. It was intended for genital herpes, but cold sores are caused by the same family of viruses, and Valtrex stops colds sores in their tracks. None of the other treatments come close to the effectiveness of Valtrex, not the ointment Zovirax, and certainly not Abreva or anything else. Ask your doctor about it to see if you would be a good candidate for this medication. My doctor prescribed it for me for cold sores about five years ago and after taking it only a couple of times I hardly ever get a cold sore any more, and before Valtrex I was having several attacks a year. On the rare occasions that I do get one now, it is gone almost immediately when I take the medication - in about a day. In the meantime, here are a couple of informative links.

Have you ever had Laryngitis and Pharyngitis at the same time?

I do and I cannot speak! voice is gone to the point where even whispering hurts. It is driving me nuts that I can't converse with my friends and family. That is why I am so active on this site tonight. Tell of your experiences with being a temporary mute.
----------

Yes. In fact, whispering will only do MORE harm to your voice. If you are going to speak, just talk as if nothing is wrong with your voice. The best thing to do is to stay quiet. :-) it'll resolve in a few. No worries.  (+ info)

Should i go to school with pharyngitis?

I just got diagnosised with pharyngitis and im 14 i was wonder should i go to school

Details

my prescription was a 30 tablet bottle of omoxicillin (500g tablets) and i have had this for 5 days should i go to school or no?
----------

Bless your heart, Cody! I'll bet you have a really sore throat, don't you?
The question is: do you feel well enough to go to school? Pharyngitis makes you feel miserable and actually, it is not contagious after 3 days. Since the doctor prescribed Amoxiciillin, your sore throat was not caused by a viral infection because antibiotics don't work on viruses. But it must have been pretty bad because you were given 500mg tablets and it's likely that you are supposed to take them 3 times a day for 10 days. Did he tell you that if you take a glass with very warm salt water and gargle with it, it makes your throat feel better? You would probably would rather eat ice cream, though!
Bottom line: I would leave that decision up to you on how you feel. Just don't be kissing any of your girlfriends, OK?
Hope you are feeling better soon! Thanks for the opportunity to answer your question!  (+ info)

How are rheumatic fever, streptococcal pharyngitis, and an anaphylactoid reaction related?

An infection of the throat (pharynx) by steptococcus pneumoniae gives you steptococal pharyngitis, or strep throat.

Unfortunately, a particular streptococcus variant has a surface antigen that "looks" a lot like surface proteins located in the heart muscle and heart valves. If a step infection goes untreated by antibiotics, the body will make antibodies against this surface antigen.

Consequently, these antibodies can turn against the structures in the heart and heart valves. In severe cases, the heart and it's valves can be damaged.

Additionally, a body-wide rash can develop, also as a result of antibody function, giving rise to the term 'scarlet fever'.

Bottom line? Treat streptococcal infections promptly.

And anaphylactoid reaction? Not sure of the connection.  (+ info)

how long does a viral pharyngitis last for?

My first winter formal is this saturday and i've had this since wesday? will it be gone by then? it started to get better last night but i thought i would wake up without but i still have it plz help!
----------

Without serology to determine the exact virus, that would be impossible to answer. So, a rough guess is anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks, assuming you have seen your doctor and are on something to prevent a secondary infection. Gargle several times daily with a warm salt-water or dilute hydrogen peroxide will also help (do no swallow either).

I have Pharyngitis? Well the throat redness and all not going away?

I have little pimples and all in my throat. My doctor said it is my normal throat but I think it is Pharyngitis. Well the doctor said I had Pharyngitis, but my other one says it is my normal throat. Please I don't wanna die. I am really stressed and all about this. I have no fever or any other soreness. Is it Pharyngitis?
----------

Pharyngitis is what the doctor said so that is probably what you have. Do not stress, it might ease your mind to get a second opinion. Nobody can diagnose you from a distance. Go to another doctor if you feel it necessary. Tell them that you want to rule out a strep infection. Gargle with warm salt water. Relax. Good luck. (I do not believe you have a life-threatening disease, by the way.)  (+ info)

What does Pharyngitis feel like in your throat?

My throat feels lumpish,,,,Not really sore but feels like a lump in my throat,,,,when I gargle salt water,,it seems to help....doctor prescribed antibiotic,,,,has anybody ever had Pharyngitis?
----------

Just like the person above me said, pharyngitis is the medical term for a "sore throat." If it makes you feel any better, there is a nasty strain of cold going around this season that sounds like what you have. I have known at least 20 people the past couple months who've had it, including myself. It is nasty, and just settles in your throat making it VERY sore, and there will be a lot of mucous (sorry, I know that's gross) involved once things start to move. It also might end up affecting your voice as well. When I first got it, it was like I just couldn't clear my throat out, no matter how much I coughed and swallowed and tried to clear it. Just get plenty of rest and fluids, and keep the talking to a minimum. Anti-inflammatories (Advil, Tylenol, Aleve, etc.) will help to ease some of the discomfort. Gargling with some warm salt water might also make you better faster.

Get well soon! :)  (+ info)

What is the most common cause of bacterial sore throat/pharyngitis?

a. food allergies
b. Streptococcus pyogenes (a bacteria)
c. Haemophilus influenza (a bacteria)
d. Candida albicans (a fungus)
----------

(b) Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A Streptococcus, is part of the normal flora of a certain percentage of healthy carriers. It can cause a series of infections that differ enormously in their severity. Apart from viral infections, Streptococcus pyogenes is the commonest cause of sore throat or "strep throat" as it is usually known. It can also cause skin infections following burns and wounds  (+ info)

Can pharyngitis effect the gums in the mouth at all?

does is swell up the gums or give painful aches?
----------

No it doesn't. It sounds as though you have a gum problem. Gums should be firm and light pink in colour.

If they are red, inflamed and bleed at the slightest touch, you need to act now. Ignore any bleeding, seriously. Brush twice a day, ignore the bleeding I know it's difficult, but it will calm down the prob. I can give a more detailed discription if this is the case.  (+ info)
