Photophobia?

For some reason my pupils are always very dilated, which causes me a degree of photophobia even in normal light. For example, if I walk out of a building into daylight, even if the sun isn't out, the brightness causes significant pain for a couple of minutes before I get used to it.

I'm mildly short sighted, which I wear glasses for and have done for the past year.

Is there anything I can do (other than wear sunglasses all the time) to stop the photophobia? Eyedrops or something I could use to constrict my pupils??
----------

Hello there ! Well the best thing you can do is find out the underlying cause of your photophobia!
"Often, photophobia is a symptom of another underlying problem, such as a corneal abrasion, uveitis, or a central nervous system disorder such as meningitis. Light sensitivity may also be associated with retinal detachment, contact lens irritations, sunburn and refractive surgery.

Photophobia often accompanies albinism, total color deficiency (seeing only in shades of gray), botulism, rabies, mercury poisoning, conjunctivitis, keratitis and iritis. Certain rare diseases, such as the genetic disorder keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD), are reported to cause photophobia. And some medications may cause light sensitivity as a side effect, including belladonna, furosemide, quinine, tetracycline and doxycycline."

The best way to treat photophobia is to treat the underlying cause. In most cases that makes the photophobia stop.

If that doesn't work and your still experiencing extreme photophobia there are prosthetic contact lenses that are specially colored to look like your own eyes. Prosthetic contact lenses can reduce the amount of light that enters the eye, so your eyes are more comfortable.

Best thing to do is see an ophthalmologist to find out the underlying cause of your photophobia and you can work from there!!! :) hope that helps a bit  (+ info)

How long does photophobia last and what can I do to alleviate the problem?

I've been sleeping in my contacts. I know it was a bad idea, but it's too late now. My eyes are way too sensitive to the light. What can I do besides wering sunglasses?
----------

You need to go to an eye doctor. Sleeping in your contact promotes infection. Conjunctivitis or pink eye will cause photophobia. You will need antibiotics. Also sleeping in your contacts will promote calcium and other mineral build up. This can also contribute to your photophobia. I used to wear contacts.. I get conjunctivits several times and I get sick of it. I went and had lasik laser surgery done and it was the best thing I have ever done. It is somewhat pricey but, not as pricey as it used to be. Plus, it pays for itself by me not having to buy contacts and cleaning supplies for the contacts and make appointments to see the eye doctor once or twice a year. I definitely recommend doing it. I hope this helps. Good luck.  (+ info)

What is best for photophobia when using a computer: "night vision glasses for driving at night", or gunnar?

Do "night vision glasses" do any help or is just a color, compared to gunnar glasses which have XXI century technology?
----------

If glare is your problem, I would suggest getting an anti-reflective coating for your lenses. This usually costs between 50 and 90 dollars. I would not suggest gunnar solely for computer use.  (+ info)

What is best for photophobia and visual fatigue?

Now, there are those led displays, which have 1000000:1 contrast and 120hz refresh rate, but, is it that enought to get rid of visual fatigue when working on a computer, or Gunnar glasses are better
----------

Feeling visual fatigue at a computer can be from a few different things. Sometimes your eyes can get tired from feeling dry. You may also be experiencing asthenopia from needing glasses. If you are over 40 years old I know for sure this is what you are experiencing. You may also just need glasses.  (+ info)

Can you have photophobia (light sensitivity) without having an eye disease?

I was reading about photophobia and it seems to be caused by diseases or cataracts. Is it possible to have eyes which are overly sensitive to light, without there being any underlying condition?

Basically can you just have sensitive eyes without there necessarily being a cataract or a disease?

Thanks in advance.

Yes it's possible.
But people should get in checked out just in case.  (+ info)

Extreme Photophobia after chemotherapy?

I developed sever photophobia following chemotherapy.I have been evaluated by several Drs, and they state everything is fine. I see glare off of everything, and sometimes everything goes dark for about 1 minute then everything goes back to normal.
----------

Yes, photophobia may be caused by chemotherapy.

You can have it checked by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist or eye care specialist) where you can be informed of management and treatment. Meanwhile, you can wear dark colored glasses to minimize the light that enters your eye.
