Looking for information on Photophobia (light sensitivity or intolerance).?

I'd like more information on photophobia other than "can be caused by other illnesses or by medications, etc" I'm curious if it is possible to be born with this condition. How it is to live with these symptoms long term. And if this condition makes you more prone to developing blind spots or damaging your vision in other ways such as general vision deterioration.

So basically something that isn't the usual textbook explaination. it's research :D

I'm having eye pain, and photophobia. What causes it and how do you cure it?

Sensetive to light. I just got surgery - abdominal. I don't know if this is relevant or not.

Everyone is different and some of us are sensitive to light more then others . Why are you having pain in your eye , well I am not sure but all I can say I don't think it's relevant to your recent abdominal surgery . I would consult with a qualified Eye specialist just to make sure that your condition isn't anything serious . No one can be really sure . I wish all the best and a speedy recovery soon .   (+ info)

Why is photophobia a symptom of infection?

Photophobia is abnormal intolerance of light. It's mechanisms are not particularly well understood.

In meningitis, it is likely to be secondary to the irritation of the meninges (membrane-like layers surrounding the brain) which in turn irritates one of the nerves supplying the eye, causing photophobia.  (+ info)

I think Chanel sunglasses is much better to photo phobia, this are the example.  (+ info)

My eye is red and it aches horribly & has bad photophobia. Not pinkeye. What's wrong?

More the inner sclera than the outer. It hurts to even have it open unless in the dark (photophobia, as I mentioned), and I know it's not pinkeye, both because I've had it before and the symptoms were quite different, and because this redness is a little more localized with more intense pain.

i would go to the opthamalogist right away. There is pain involved so you better go before you do permanent damage. They usually have an emergency hotline or something. Quit reading this and go!  (+ info)

how do i know if i have photophobia?

Im not terrified of light or anything but i am sensitive to sunlight and i do tend to cringe when im exposed to it, I am perfectly healthy and havent had any biological problems since i was a kid, and when ever im exposed to sunlight i also always sneeze right on contact, should i be concerned or can i keep on with my life?
----------

A phobia is a fear. So if you're not afraid, it's not a phobia to light.

An allergy to light is possible but highly strange. Try wearing dark sunglasses everytime you go outside for a week and see if that does anything. Then take your findings to a doctor. He may refer you to an allergy specialist. I would say it's worth it, since sensitivity to sunlight can cause skin cancer --- you should look out for yourself as best you can. Know your body.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Do you have photophobia?

and no, it does not mean that you are afraid of pictures.. lol... it actually means that you are afraid of bright lights. Or your eyes have extreme sensitivity to light and you find yourself avoiding bright lights for fear of it hurting.

Anyways, I have it. I always have, but it was never this bad until I had pink eye last Thanksgiving. Now it's worse and it doesn't help that I work down in a basement with no windows. When I walk out of the building, my eyes instantly burn and start tearing.

What are your symptoms after the zigzag lights go away?

I start with sudden lights in my vision for about 20-30 minutes. Sometimes it is followed by one sided pain, photophobia and generalized fatigue for several hours. Is this common?
----------

Uh NO!!! you may have a serious problem and you should contact your doctor immediately. Sudden lights in your vision could indicate a retinal tear and or mini stroke....go.  (+ info)
