Are Retained Placenta's Heredity?

My mother had retained placenta's with both my sister and myself. I'm wondering what the chances are I'll also have this; is it heredity? Is there anything i can do to prevent it?

Straight-forward answers plz, something easy-ish to understand.
Thanks.

Retained Placenta?

with my first two labors i have had retained placenta both times. my second was also unexpected as the first placenta because i was not expecting it to happen again, and it did..so now here i am on my third birth coming july 15th and im wondering what my chances are of this happening again..it was a very scary thing and not being able to hold my little one to have to go into surgery blood transfusions and all im also wondering if there might be anything i can do to help this from happening again and what my chances could be of avoiding this from happening again.thx everyone!

Well I too had a retained placenta with my first child (12 years ago) and I am pregnant with my second (13 weeks). My doctor told me I had to deliver in the high risk section of the maternity ward because the chances of it happening again are high. Its just so I am closer to the operating room she said. I read the chance is 50% for it to happen again and since you have had two I assume your chances are higher. I am worried about this too. It sucks not being able to hold your baby much after the birth. But I read there is nothing we can do. I have done lots of research (well as much as I could find on the internet as there isn't that much info).  (+ info)

Retained placenta...?

I have had a good search on the www but cant seem to find a great deal of info?

I had a section for my first pegnancy - twins that were in 'undesirable' positions for a natural delivery ..

My 2nd birth was 'natural' although heavily assisted and i had a retained placenta that caused endless complications..

I am expecting again and my midwife tld me today that because i had a retained Placenta for my last birth i am more than likely to have the same problem again, hence the consultatnt wanting a section.

Can anyone please advise if it is likey to have subsequent retained placeta if it happened in a previous birth/delivery..

Any www links would also be fab !

Thank you :)

I could only find one study (that doesn't mean there aren't many I'm missing), but it looks like within this study in Nigeria, the normal percentage of retained placentas was 1.9% and the number of retained placentas where there was a previous case was 13.3%. Socioeconomic factors, care or anything else didn't seem to be risk factors, however previous cesarean section alone was at 13.3% as well. Here's the link:

FYI - I use PubMed to do my searches for medical stuff:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/

Along with the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, which is a fabulous group that takes all the studies out there on a particular subject and then does a meta-analysis of the results:
http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/en/topics/87.html
You might check out the study on an oxyticin injection into the umbilical cord as an alternative way to manage retained placenta, instead of surgery?
http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab001337.html
It might be worth a printoff and a carry in to your next appointment...the worst they can say is "no"...

I hope this helps!  (+ info)

Will retained products of placenta come out a person's uterus without intervention?

4 weeks ago I lost my baby. I had to hold his lifeless body in my arms. The pain & sorrow I felt I can never describe in words. As if that was not bad enough I got the worst treatment in Darren Valley hospital where we were treated like mere numbers, the nurses were so rude and obnoxious. We was left unattended to for nearly 48hours. In the end after many agonising long hours I was given tablets to induce my baby who by the way was still breathing inside of me. I was pumped with so much morphine I became hysterical. My baby finally came out stillborn. Guess what? They hospital still managed to leave some retained products of placenta inside my uterus measuring 31*18*15mm. I have been from one hospital to another as I am STILL bleeding and having pains and I've been told to wait & see if it will come out by itself. My husband & I going sick with worry as we have not been able to move forward with our lives. Will the retained products of placenta come out byself, how long should I wait?

I'm not a medical professional so not totally confident on my facts, but I've been led to believe that retained placenta could cause an infection and often needs to be removed under a surgical procedure, for the mother's safety. Would it be possible for you to talk to a different doctor or perhaps try to contact a different hospital, to see if you can get a second opinion?

I'm so sorry for your loss and hope that you are able to grieve for your baby without this added worry before long xxx  (+ info)

retained placenta and home births?

hi i would like a home birth for my second child my first labour was 4 and a half hours with gas and air so that was ok but i had a retained placenta ive never been told why and my midwife said she will try and find out but doesn't think it would happen again and thinks it was because i had the injection to make it come out has anyone had any experience in this and would i have to be rushed to hospital in this situation? also my first baby big for my frame (im 5 foot and size 6uk and she was 8 and half pounds) so i had to have stitches can the midwife do this at home if i needed them? thanks in advance

I am a community midwife in the UK. There is a slightly increased risk of having a retained placenta again but it is far from a certainty that you will have one. The injection aids delivery of the placenta and reduces the risk of excessive blood loss. With your history I would recommend you have the injection of syntometrine this time.

You are still able to have a homebirth. However if the placenta was not delivered within an hour of the birth you would be transfered to hospital by ambulance (sooner if bleeding). Your midwife will discuss this with you and a consultant. Factors influencing the safety of recommending a home delivery for you will include how much blood you lost last time, reviewing your last delivery notes to see how adhered the placenta was when it was manually removed and how close you live to the hospital.  (+ info)

Any one ever had a retained placenta if not some advice on my next delivery?

i had a retained placenta with my first but also had forceps delivery an had placenta manually removed it was a really bad experience for me with a really long recovery i couldn't physically walk for 8 weeks i am 38weeks an 2 days an im booked in at my request for a c section because of my experience i am just wondering if anyone has suffered with a retained placenta an what there experience was with that an any delivery's after as im still unsure im doing the right thing in going for c section some of your experiences would be really helpfull in either changing my mind or reassuring me

i had retained placenta after my second child, most of the placenta came awaybut some was left. notthing was done for me for 3 months, i then had to go and have a d'n'c which went ok. my third delivery was normal everything went as planned and didn need a c section, the choice is yours but if your worried about delivery i would go with c section as your anxiety will be no good for you or baby, good luck,xx  (+ info)

Has anyone sued for retained placenta (accreta) / Medical negligence due to doctor leaving in after delivery?

I gave birth 6 weeks ago to my second son. During 4th week, I was still bleeding and had bad back & abdominal pain. I called the doctor again & had to go in to hospital for an emergency D&C b/c he said there was retained placenta pieces in me from the delivery! He said he was surprised at the size of the piece & that it was still "thriving"! This really made me angry, b/c to me, this is negligence on his part. Especially b/c I was given Cytotec to be dialated (and after much research, the doctors know that this can cause the placenta to break apart & remain attached to your uterus), and also, he had to manually use his hand to remove my placenta b/c it wouldn't come out - should he not have done a sonogram to be sure he got it all?? I had to undergo a D&C, in which I began hemoraging, had to have a balloon inserted in me for two days, undergo a blood transfusion & spent two days in hospital. 2 wks after d&C & 6 wks after delivery, still bleeding! Has anyone sued for similar events?

This definitely sounds like something to sue over, it's complete negligence.  (+ info)

Is there anyway to prevent a retained placenta?

Im 26 weeks and pregnant with baby 3. When I gave birth to baby 2 it was a fast labour and delivery it was 1 hour in total. I was in the hospital carpark in the ambulance when baby was born. When my midwife pulled the cord it snapped and she lost the end holding the placenta. I had to have a manuel retrieval Baby was a home birth but I needed gas and air so was sent to hospital in ambulance. As i had a retained placenta i have to have a hospital birth but im worried about having a retained placenta again. Has any1 any advice on ways prevent this. Ive talked to the midwives but they werent very helpful.
----------

If you have already had a retained placenta in a previous birth, you have a higher risk of it happening again (Tandberg et al 1999: 33-6). There is not much you can do to prevent it happening again if it was due to the placenta adhering to an old caesarean scar, or placenta accreta.

Retained placenta is more common in premature births than those born full term, probably because the placenta was designed to stay put for 40 weeks, so if you have another premature labour, it may happen again (Dombrowski et al 1995).

However, if the retained placenta happened because the cord snapped or the cervix closed too quickly after having the oxytocic injection, you may wish to discuss with your midwife whether or not to have a natural third stage with your next baby. By allowing the placenta to deliver naturally, you avoid the possibility of the cervix closing too quickly and trapping the placenta.  (+ info)

DID ANYONE HAVE A RETAINED PLACENTA?!?!?

MY BABY IS 15 MONTHS AND WHEN I HAD HIM MY PLACENTA WAS RETAINED & SPECIALISTS HAD TO REMOVE IT MANUALLY I HAD IT ALL NATURAL IT WAS SUPER PAINFUL!!! I AM 10 WEEKS PREGNANT & IM SCARED IT MIGHT HAPPENED AGAIN! HAS ANYONE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM?? & I NEVER WORRIED ABOUT ASKING WHY IT HAPPENED.. NOW IM WONDERING THOUGH. I HAVE MY APPOINTMENT FRIDAY BUT I WANNA KNOW YOUR OPINIONS..
----------

my placent was a no show, over a hour after delvery, so they manualy removed it, not relising it was embeded in my uterus, so they left peices behind, I had thro my whole PG placenta edema, so i was sent home and was just fine, till 2 weeks later i strated bleeding and passing HUGE clots... ER gave me little pills to help expel the placenta bits, so the next morning i took my 1st pill but since they were embeded, the pill sent me into a even worst hemmorage making me lose over 1/2 my blood before we even made it back to the ER.. rushing me into surgery for a D&C and possible historectomy.. luckly the D&C worked, and with some blood transfusions, i survived...

NOW im 26 weeks along with our second, and i too am very worryed, but the placenta on my US is diffrent and while they cant tell if its ingrowned again, i feel like its not by how thick it appears compared to my 1st babys... anyways.. MY DR said that its very unlikly for it to
happen again...

i REALLY think it should be every hosp policy to do US to check for placenta if it haas to be manualy removed... but its not... so if it happens again, i will request one, if my placenta shows up by its self well then i will assume all is well...  (+ info)

I am sorry for what you have gone though I cannot understand why the doctors and nurses have been so horrid to you
you should go back take your partner or mum with you there is a simple operation they can do to remove anything that's left called a D & C you can be home again a couple of hours later  (+ info)
