How do I get thinner and leaner calves?

Yes, i've heard many answers as to running, and weight loss could reduce the size of the calves. But I've been observing, that most pro basketball players, NBA players, etc have lean calves, but their upper body are big and bulky. How do they maintain their muscle mass and still have thin and lean calves?
example: dwayne wade, kobe bryant
well, again, if you have large muscle mass on upperbody, when you run, you make your calves bigger. It's basically weight training, so doubt it's running.

how can you tell the difference between pneumonia and a cold flu and cough?

how long does it take to progress into something serious. like say you get sick start coughing and think you are sick then you make an appointment to see a doctor in a week. can the pneumonia spread super fast and kill you? i mean if you are elderly and you are trying to see a doctor as fast as you can but say you cant get in for a week. or you dont think it is serious... until it is very developed. can it develop in a week?
----------

Pneumonia is the lung's reaction to a bacterial or viral infection in the lungs, and it can develop as quick as a day. If you feel like you have something worse than a cold, then instead of waiting for a Doctor go to an ER or better yet go to a walk-in clinic and let them know of your symptoms. They will do a chest x-ray to determine if you have pneumonia. Signs of pneumonia include a "wet" chest, coughing up sputum that is green or yellow colored and/or foul smelling, shortness of breath, and possible fever. Most common sign is shortness of breath.  (+ info)

How can I lose weight, without making my calves get any bigger?

I know running is the best cardio exercise to help lose fat, however it makes my calves a lot larger. And genetically my calves are big because my whole family all have short thick calves. And I know running is just going to make my problem worst! So what can I do? Any exercises or suggestions?
----------

Swimming might be better, you might also try learning to walk differently to use ;the other muscles in your leg more than the calf muscle itself.
Try shifting your body weight, and focus on pressing down through the heels which will place more of the emphasis on your glutes and hamstrings. Use those muscles to more, it may take practice.  (+ info)

What's the difference between viral and bacterial pneumonia?

I can't believe I'm this old and still can't seem to get this right. My mother-in-law (she's 80 and lives with us) is in the hospital with pneumonia, apparently developing it rather quickly. She has had several trips to the ER about her back (sciatica) recently, and someone said she could have gotten it there.

What I can't seem to get through my head is which one is contagious ... it's viral, right? I don't know which one she has yet (hubby finding out now), but if it's viral then my next question is going to be what should I do to protect my kids and me, who are home with her all day lol.
----------

The most common way you catch pneumonia bacterial or viral is to breathe infected air droplets from someone who has pneumonia. Another cause is an improperly cleaned air conditioner. Yet another source of infection in your lungs is spread by an infection from somewhere else in your body, such as your kidney. Your risk of catching pneumonia is determined by the specific bacteria, virus, or fungus, the number of organisms you inhale, and your body's ability to fight infections.

Germs are spread both by aerosolized droplets that you breathe in (such as from a sneeze), and through body fluids left on surfaces like counter tops and door handles. If you avoid people who are coughing or sneezing, and wash your hands frequently, you can reduce your chances of catching a virus.

I would suggest keeping everything sprayed with a antibacterial agent of some sort, but make sure it does not hurt your mother-in-law. Cleaning everything with Pine Sol, strict hand washing, and make sure your mother in law covers her mouth when coughing or sneezing. You could also buy face masks and gloves for you and your children until she is no longer contagious. I would ask the doctor also how long your mother in law will be contagious

Hope this helps.  (+ info)

How effective are calf raises for fat calves?

I know that spot reducing is a myth but will doing calf raises reduce the fat on my calves?
And how many will I need to do daily, and how long until I see results?
----------

When people try to sell you products or magic machines, just remember these fundamental concepts.

Muscle burns fat. Even at rest, the more toned your muscles are, the more fat they will burn.

Your body will burn its fat reserves in whatever order it wants to, you can't control that. (The idea of "spot reducing" is indeed false.)

Toned muscles will firm up and eventually build up. So targeting an area for strength training (including calf raises) WILL affect that particular muscle or set of muscles.

Therefore, doing calf raises will firm up and eventually build up the muscles in your calves. In so doing, your calves may appear larger (bigger muscles with fat on top) for a while.

Your best bet for losing fat anywhere on your body is a full body strength training workout using weights or machines. Calf raises are essentially weight lifting, as you are lifting your entire body weight with those muscles. The more muscles that are toned, the more fat you will burn off (all over). If you start a program like this, you will see results very soon. That's why all the advertised work out problems guarantee results in 30 days - because any sort of regular weight training workout will show results in that time period. The problem is that people don't know what they are doing and don't work out properly.

An hour before working out, drink a protein shake. Right before you work out, stretch GENTLY to warm up your muscles a little. Never bounce or overstretch. After you finish your workout, stretch out your muscles. Just stretch gently and hold. That will prevent soreness the next day. Immediately after your work out, drink another protein shake. Protein feeds the muscles.

Success comes from putting the time in. There are no short cuts.  (+ info)
