How long does it take for bacteria to show up in pneumonia?

My Mom is very sick and in critical condition with a terrible pneumonia, she has had many tests and a bronchoscopy done a few times. I was just wondering how long it takes for that bacteria to grow and show up, because they still don't know where the infection is coming from. It could be viral, but her white blood cell count is high, in the 20000s. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.
----------

It depends on the person, and it depends on the type of tests they are doing. They should be doing chest x-rays regularly to check the progression of the pneumonia.

There are blood tests to help show if there is an infection in the body, if they order a CBCD (a complete blood count and differential), that is one of the most common tests used to check for general infections. If her white blood cell count is increased, it IS a sign of infection. To determine if the infection is bacterial, they should look at the 'differential count', which is a breakdown of the 5 types of white cells in the blood. If the 'Neutrophils' are elevated, then it is most likely a bacterial infection (and then it could probably be treated with antibiotics), whereas if the 'Lymphocytes' are elevated, it is most likely a viral infection.

It sounds to me like they aren't giving you enough information. Don't hesitate to ask plenty of questions, or even ask for a second opinion.

Good luck, hope your mom starts feeling better.  (+ info)

Is it possible to have pneumonia or bronchitis without a fever or having a cold/flu first?

Is it possible for a person who is in their twenties to get pneumonia or bronchitis without a fever? And do these always develop from a cold/flu only? Everyone who has had pneumonia or bronchitis that I know has had a pre-occurring cold or flu and had a fever. So if someone has all the symptoms of either do they have to have a fever and have had a recent sickness to be diagnosed or is it possible to be healthy one day and come down with pneumonia or bronchitis the next day, seemingly out of nowhere?

Why do alcoholics sometimes develop pneumonia and die after heavy drinking bouts? Are the two linked somehow?

This happened to at least two famous people: Calamity Jane and Dylan Thomas. DOES heavy drinking sometimes lead to fatal pneumonia, or is this just a coincidence? Could it have to do with aspirating food into your lungs as a result of the heavy drinking?
----------

What happens is that they get Aspiration Pneumonia, when they are drinking heavily the swallowing process becomes less regulated, so secretions and saliva will go into lungs instead of going to stomach and causes the pneumonia which can be complicated by bacterial infection.  (+ info)

Can you get pneumonia from a child who has just gotten the Prevnar vaccine?

My son got his 1-yr old round of shots which included the Prevnar vaccine. 2 weeks later I got pneumonia and was very sick. Could I have gotten pneumonia because of my son's vaccine?

What are the chances of pneumonia with flu?

Hi,
I am currently 29 weeks pregnant. I tested positive for flu A (which in our area they are not testing further for H1N1, just assuming thats which strain you have).
I have been having difficulty breathing and a horrible cough (in addition to the normal flu symptoms). I also have yellow/white sputum.
What are the chances that it is pneumonia?
----------

Well it could be a secondary infection..just not necessarily pneumonia..but seeing that you are pregnant I would go to the doctor..if it is a secondary infection then you will need an antibiotic..But just go to the doctor to be safe for you and your baby..keep hydrated and watch your temperature..be extra careful since you are pregnant..If you are indeed short of breath then you need to go to an ER..hope you get better soon.  (+ info)

Can pneumonia or bronchitis be present without a cough or fever?

I've been having chest pain at the very top of my chest for 2 days now, and sometimes shortness of breath. I've felt more tired than usual this week too. But I don't have a cough at all and no fever. Could this still be pneumonia or bronchitis, or do those always include a cough or fever?

How long can I expect a cough to last after recovering from pneumonia?

I had pneumonia about three weeks ago. I've completed a full round of antibiotics and I'm feeling much better, but still have a pretty bad cough. Yes, I am calling the doctor, but she's taking her sweet time getting back to me, so I was wondering if anyone has had this before and could tell me from experience how long I could have this cough.
----------

I had pneumonia last year, and I had a cough that last for a little more than a month. You are just clearing out your lungs again. It does go away when everything is cleaned out. It varies for each person, and depends on how severe the illness was. If you've already completed the anti-biotics and feeling alright, it should only be another week or two.  (+ info)

What is the correlation between reactive airway disease and pneumonia?

My daughter has an exclusionary rider for reactive airway and we are being denied coverage for both a couple of office visits and ER visit for pneumonia. Never did the doctor say her reactive airway (which she has only had once....two years ago!!) was related to the pneumonia.
----------

There is no correlation except pneumonia can exacerbate her reactive airway disease. But, not every time she got reactive airway the cause would be pneumonia. The cause can be varied.  (+ info)

what are the chances of getting pneumonia or bronchitis from a seasonal flu ?

I have the flu and i am wondering what the chances of getting pneumonia or bronchitis because o the flu
rare? more than likely ?
----------

If I had to assign a number, I would say......Hum......70%.

Stay hydrated, take decongestants if you feel like your congested, hot showers always make me feel better, get plenty of vitamin C and wash your hands often. This can help prevent illness regardless if you the flu or not.

Good luck.  (+ info)
