Pre-eclampsia?

I posted a question yesterday about the baby being in my ribs because I've had pain in the right side of my rib cage for a couple of weeks (I'm 30 wks pregnant). Well, this morning I read in one of my pregnancy books that this can be a "non-specific" sign of pre-eclampsia. My OB is having me come in this afternoon. I don't have any of the other signs (high BP -although my BP isn't great, sudden weight gain, swelling), but my mom had pre-eclampsia with both me and my sister - I was born by emergency C-section at 36 weeks because my mom was about to have a stroke. Has anyone else had pain in their ribs like that? Did it turn into pre-eclampsia or not? They told me to try to relax today in case my blood pressure is high but of course now I'm scared to death!
The pain isn't unbearable. It hurts, but it's kind of a dull ache. It seems to get worse if I bend over or lean forward (which is why I thought it was pressure from the baby for so long). It's worst when I'm driving for some reason - it seems to wrap around my rib cage into my back then.

It's good that you are having this checked out, but it doesn't sound like preeclampsia to me. It would be rare that this was the only symptom present.

Upper right abdominal pain in preeclampsia is caused by liver distention.  (+ info)

pre-eclampsia?

34 weeks with twins. i have noticed seeing flashy silver spots in my peripheral vision. i asked a question a while ago about them and i have been doing some research online. all i can find is that the spots are a warning sign for pre-eclampsia and everything i read about pre-eclampsia is pretty serious...like bedrest and a battery of tests (possibly early delivery). have any of you ever had pre-eclampsia? if so were you ordered on bed rest? did you have to deliver early? please share your experience with me. i have an appointment in the morning and i will be able to talk to my doctor about it then...but im just wanting as much information about it as i can now. thanks!

oh and i have had no high blood pressure so far in my pregnancy. and i have no other warning signs for pre-eclampsia...so i dont even know if this is what i have or if it is something else. obviously i will let my doctor decide...but do you know of anything else it could be?
----------

First of all, try not to worry - as long as you are receiving regular pre-natal care your doctor will be watching for signs of pre-eclampsia/toxemia. I had severe pre-eclampsia with my first, and was hospitalized at 36 weeks. I had only slightly elevated blood pressure prior to the doctor's appt that ended up with my being admitted to hospital. I had severe swelling in my legs beginning at around 30 weeks (poke test - poke your leg, and if the dent stays, there's a problem), I felt generally ill and had loss of appetite in the days leading up to that last regular doctors appt. I don't recall visual disturbances, but I suffer from migraines and may have assumed any headache or visual disturbance was just another migraine. Your doctor may do a urine test to check for protein in your urine, especially if your blood pressure is elevated at all. A sudden and unexplained gain in weight can also be a sign or pre-eclampsia.

I was told if my blood pressure went down I would be put on bed rest at home until delivery. My blood pressure peaked at 170/110 and would not go down so after 2 days in hospital I was induced and my daughter was born at 36wks & 6 days. She was perfectly healthy if a little annoyed at joining the world early (she just wanted to sleep all the time)

My doctor assured me repeatedly that my daughter was in no danger, it was me that was sick, so don't worry about your babies - your doctor will do what is best for all 3 of you!

I'm now on pregnancy number 4 and have never had another problem with pre-eclampsia, despite being high risk for it, so just because it happens once doesn't mean it will happen again. Try to keep any stress in your life to a minimum.... I have no doubt stress contributed to my issue.

Good luck at your appt!  (+ info)

pre eclampsia?

I was just wondering if any one else who had pre eclampsia felt a bit 'high' after having the magnesium sulfate? Im not sure if it was that but I was definately not myself and I felt great while I was having it but extremely ill before and after. I remember telling the doctors and nurses repeatedly how good I felt. I kinda feel a little silly now.
----------

Well I just got out of the hospital and they had me on an I.V. drip of Magnesium Sulfate for at least one entire day, plus some of the next. It really made me feel like I was in an oven melting. Not only that it made me hot, it just made me feel like I was a pile of mush. I even had double vision on this medication. I really have to say I didn't like it that much. I am glad that you had a good experience.  (+ info)

Pre- Eclampsia?

I'm 30 weeks pregnant and I am retaining alot of water... I have swelling of hands, feet, and face. I gained 3 pounds in 1 week! My blood pressure fluctuates from really high to normal and my heart beat is always racing... Do you think this is the onset of pre- eclampsia...
----------

Hi - I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble...and I'm even more saddended by the misinformation that is out there about this disease. Your symptoms are worrisome and you need to contact your doctor. Have they checked your urine for protein? Also, your fluctuating blood pressures are considered "labile" and are another way that pre-e manifests itself.

Preeclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn baby. Affecting at least 5-8% of all pregnancies, it is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms; however, some women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms. It can be very dangerous. Know the symptoms and trust yourself! Wishing you all the best. Take care  (+ info)

Pre eclampsia?

I have a mate who is about 16 weeks. She is telling everyone she has pre eclampsia, that she could die, I asked her how they found out as they dont usually test that early and she said her blood pressure was 120 over 80. I dont thijnk that sounds high at all, and its amazing how many things she has had happen during the pregnancy. Its almost like she is reading a medical dictionary and quoting it or something. Am I being really unfair to not entirely believe her?
by reading a medical dictionary i mean, she apparently has been feeling it kick since 11 weeks, she had to leave work due to heavy bleeding (that she then forgot about) she saw its hand poke out at 14 weeks, she was showing at 8 weeks etc

i once knew someone like that,in the end nobody beleived her  (+ info)

Pre-Eclampsia?!?

I'm almost 39 weeks pregnant.
I went to my checkup last week and noticed that my blood pressure was 127 over something. That's pretty normal I guess, but at my visit before that, my BP was only like 120, and throughout my whole pregnancy it was only 119/70. My doctor told me to call them if I was getting headaches or feeling sick and all that kinda stuff. PLUS I've had a significant weight gain throughout my pregnancy, I went from a pre-preg weight of 120 to being 200+.
Well I've been getting pretty minor headaches since then, and I haven't really been feeling nauseous but I do have headaches. Since my appointment last week I've taken tylenol evrey day for a headache. My BP is still pretty normal but I don't know if I should be worrying about it. My feet and calves swell, but my hands and face don't. Doc said it was normal. I don't know what I should do? What happens if I've developed pre-eclampsia? I know what it is and does, but what happens to my pregnancy? Will I be induced?
----------

I doubt that you have preeclampsia..its totally possible but it just doesnt sound like it! I had it when I was pregnant with my twins and when the doctor is talking about a headache..mine told me that ones that you need to worry about are the ones that dont go away with tylenol and sleep and that last all day or more. Was your weight gain more at one week than the other. I was gaining around 5-7 lbs a month and then in the course of a WEEK I gained 12+ You see a lot of stars..black stars in my case. I had SEVERE upper stomach pain the kind where you roll in a ball and rock back and forth just praying for the pain to go away. Leg swelling is normal but when it goes over to your face thats when you need to worry. Your blood pressure sounds totally normal...but you kind of need to know what the bottom number is to tell you if it is high or low blood pressure!!!!! If the bottom number is really high thats when you start worrying..not about the top number so much.
If you are to develop it then they may induce..in my case I had a c-section because of the preeclampsia and because my twins were in distress. I wouldnt worry so much you are about to have that baby real soon!!!  (+ info)

How long should we wait before ttc 3rd after pre eclampsia and 2nd c section?

I have just recently had my 2nd child (8 weeks ago) and suffered with pre eclampsia again, the same as with my first. So both children were delivered by c section. I was diagnosed with PCOS while ttc my 2nd and so it took clomid and a year and a half to conceive him. With all this in mind, i was just wondering how long before we can start ttc again.
----------

You REALLY need to wait a year before ttc. My friend had GD and it took them over a year to conceive, yet 3 months into the deal BAM!! And she has been scared her whole pregnancy because of it. Just wait hun. It is NOT worth the risk, plus I'm sure your children would love some one on one time with their mommy. :)  (+ info)

At what point in pregnancy would a woman generally start developing pre-eclampsia?

If a woman is going to develop pre-eclampsia, at what point do symptoms generally start appearing?
----------

It can develop as early as 22 weeks. Most women get it in the third trimester.  (+ info)

Can previous heavy drinking before pregnancy make you more likely to have pre-eclampsia?

Can previous heavy drinking before pregnancy make you more likely to have pre-eclampsia?
I'm just curious.. They both have to do with liver functions. If you drink more than you should and perhaps harm your liver, without knowing. Would that show up maybe in pregnancy as a higher tendency towards pre-eclampsia?
----------

I wouldn't think so. I drank heavily before I got pregnant, and I didn't get pre-eclampsia.  (+ info)

How can i prevent Pre Eclampsia at home?

Ok I am just seven months pregnant and lost all my medical benefits so i cant afford to see a doctor, but i think i may have Pre Eclampsia. what can i do at home? i cant afford to go to the doctor right now and i am scared. i dont know what to do can someone offer me some good advice?
----------

You need to see a Doctor! Not only are you risking your baby you are risking your life as well. When your blood pressure get into toxic levels you could suffer a stroke that could endanger your life and the babies life. If you are 28 weeks gestation or later your baby has a very good chance of not being very sick, but still you need to see your doctor and have this checked out. if you are ok the cost will be minimal compared to the bill you will get if you have a stroke.

You have not told us why you think you have pre eclampsia, so I am not sure that you have it, but when something that serious is in question it is better to be safe then sorry.  (+ info)
