Can the swelling and headaches of pre-eclampsia come and go?

This is my 2nd preg. With my first preg, I developed pre-eclampsia at 37 weeks. I am now 36 weeks with #2 and had very swollen hands and a headache for 4 days over the past weekend, despite drinking extra water to help combat the swelling. Now the swollen hands have gone down a bit and the headache is mostly gone. I haven't talked to the doc yet. Is it possible for these symptoms to come and go and still point to pre-e?
----------

Did you go to see your doctor as soon as you had these symptoms since you had pre-eclampsia the first time around?

Of course the swelling and headaches will come and go but this does not mean you shouldn't see your doctor and have it checked out, especially if the headache lasted for 4 days.

Please be checked out by your OB or L&D  (+ info)

what causes pre eclampsia during pregnancy?

my son died from pre eclampsia and now its bugging me and i want to know what causes it.
----------

There are a number of theories ranging from too much blood flow to too little.

Some current theories include:
Uterine ischemia/ underperfusion - Insufficient blood flow to the uterus

Prostacyclin/thromboxane imbalance (ASA) - Disruption of the balance of the hormones that maintain the diameter of the blood vessels.

Endothelial activation and dysfunction - Damage to the lining of the blood vessels that regulates the diameter of the blood vessels keeping fluid and protein inside the blood vessels and keeps blood from clotting.

Calcium deficiency - Calcium helps maintain vasodilation, so a deficiency would impair the function of vasodilation (see above)

Hemodynamic vascular injury - Injury to the blood vessels due to too much blood flow,i.e. the garden hose hooked up to a fire hydrant

Preexisting maternal conditions - Mother has undiagnosed high blood pressure or other preexisting problems such as diabetes, lupus, sickle cell disorder, hyperthyroidism, kidney disorder, etc.

Immunological Activation - The immune system believes that damage has occurred to the blood vessel and in trying to fix the "injury" actually makes the problem worse (like scar tissue) and augments the process.

Nutritional Problems/Poor Diet - Insufficient protein, excessive protein, not enough fresh fruit and vegetables (antioxidants), among others theories.

High Body Fat - High body fat may actually be the symptom of the tendency to develop this disorder linked to the genetic tendency towards high blood pressure, diabetes and insulin resistance.

Insufficient Magnesium Oxide and B6 - Magnesium stabilizes vascular smooth muscles and helps regulate vascular tone. Too much magnesium acts as a laxative and is not absorbed into the body.

I had pre-eclampsia with my last child. What are the odds i will have it with this one?

I am 36 wks pregnant and so far i have had a normal pregnancy. I am pregnant with a girl.
----------

Depends

Usually it is a first time pregnancy disease, but if you've had it, chances to have it again go up, and go up even more if the baby is being fathered by another man.

36 weeks with no signs is a good sign that you may be in the clear. If it pops up again though, you'll be far enough to go ahead and induce.

Good luck. I am 35 weeks and borderline preeclampsia with my first!  (+ info)

Are babies born early due to Pre eclampsia born earlier each time?

My wife has had two babies, one at 37 weeks and the next at 33 weeks. We are worried the next baby will be born even earlier due to PE.
----------

I hope not, my daughter arrived at 26+3 and I am praying to get MUCH further with my next pregnancy! In my case the pre-eclampsia went undetected until 2 hrs before delivery. My consultant told me that because I have had the condition once they will watch me like hawks. The earlier it is detected, the better the chances of getting further, good luck xxx  (+ info)

What can I do for my Friend who has Pre Eclampsia?

My best friend lives about a seven hour drive away and has recently been hospitalized with a mild case. I have sent her flowers but I would like to do something else for her to cheer her up. She doesn't know if she will be sent home soon to be put on bed rest or if they will deliver the baby. It is very stressful for her either way because she is very worried, as she is only at week 30 of her pregnancy. Also, she is losing her mind having to stay in bed on her left side (to control blood pressure). I want to go there to visit and help her out, especially if she gets released from the hospital, but I have to go back to work in a week and a half (I'm a teacher) and I also have a toddler that would need to tag along. Can anyone give me some ideas?
----------

I had preeclampsia and was hospitalized a total of 12 days so that the doctors could monitor me and induce labor. Here are the things I was thrilled to have:

- Coloring book and colored pencils
- Puzzle books like crosswords and sudoku
- Baby/parenting magazines
- Snacks
- Propel bottled water and Diet Coke
- A DVD (I was fortunate to have my laptop with me)
- REAL pajamas (hospital gowns are AWFUL!)
- Comfy slippers instead of those stupid socks
- A fluffy bathrobe so that I could cover up on my daily wheelchair rides to triage for a non-stress test
- A REAL pillow (not those plastic ones the hospital uses)
- A book of kittens so that I had a "focal point" during labor  (+ info)

What can I eat if at high risk of gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia?

I guess I have to avoid sugar and salt - but by how much? Can I eat fruit and fruit juices? This seems to be all I can drink at the moment and due to the nausea I am already dehydrated so told to drink more!
----------

I have gest diabetes too. You should see a dietician . However.. You can have roughly 45 grams of carbs per meal , including yoru drink and 3 snakcs a day that contain about 15 grams of carbs... dont worry about sugars, count carbs. I was a BIG juice drinker too. I got crystal light packages that you pour in yoru bottled water. It has no sugar and no carbs.. It will make you feel like you are drinking juice!  (+ info)

Is Pre eclampsia associated with gestational diabetes?

My last visit my blood pressure was a little high, the nurse told me this but the doctor never mentioned anything about it. Yet now I am seeing spots when I get up and move or do sudden movements which I hear can be related to high blood pressure so I'm getting worried it might get to preeclampsia and wonder if it's also linked to gestational diabetes since I'm going for my glucose test in two weeks. Anyone else had high blood pressure, if so what happened?
----------

People who have gestational diabetes are more likely to have pre-eclampsia. However, no, not everyone who has gestational diabetes has pre-eclampsia, and not everyone with pre-eclampsia has gestational diabetes.  (+ info)

How does pre-eclampsia effect my baby?

I am 35 weeks and three days pregnant and yesterday my midwife told me that i have pre-eclampsia. She has told me that is i get blurred vision, spots in front of my eyes or a headache again i am to go to the hospital.

I understand this and i understand the different symptoms you can get but what i would like to understand is how pre-eclampsia is effecting my baby.

I really hope that someone can give me an insight on this or even a web page that explains it all in a easy to understand way.
----------

I found this on webmd I hope it helps you. Good luck.

Preeclampsia can prevent the placenta from receiving enough blood, which can cause your baby to be born very small. It is also one of the leading causes of premature births and the difficulties that can accompany them, including learning disabilities, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and hearing and vision problems.  (+ info)
