The charge nurse observes a new graduate performing a dressing change on a stage III sacral pressure ulcer.?

Which action by the new graduate indicates a need for further education about pressure ulcer care?
a. The new graduate uses a hydrocolloid dressing (DuoDerm) to cover the ulcer.
b. The new graduate inserts a sterile cotton-tipped applicator into the pressure ulcer.
c. The new graduate irrigates the pressure ulcer with a 30-ml syringe using sterile saline.
d. The new graduate cleans the ulcer with a sterile dressing soaked in half-strength peroxide.
----------

D. Using peroxide is not appropriate and no longer acceptable way of caring wounds as per latest evidence. So, it does require a further education.
Using hydrogen peroxide on the wound is no longer a practice as it disturbs the epithelial migration within the wound during the healing process. It does also affect the granulation.  (+ info)

Hmm, it sounds like you're in a lot of pain! Poor thing!

It really doesn't sound like an ulcer to me...but I'm not a doctor, yet. :)

Have you considered an upper endoscopy? It's a pretty painles proceedure where a doctor takes a teeny, tiney camera on a tube and puts it down into your stomach to take picture of your insides. (You will be completely asleep during the proceedure, so you won't feel a thing!)

The images can be looked at by your doctor or a specialist to determine what is going on inside of you. You could have something seriously wrong, or mild, or maybe you're pregnant? :)

I'm sure your doctor and you can figure out what's wrong, it just might take a little time.

Good luck, Hun. I'm so sorry you are feeling icky. Hope you feel better soon!  (+ info)

What are the effects of low eye-bal pressure in the long-term?

My eyes will get really red and it hurst a little, but that's pretty much it.... it goes away after a little while...

Can this cause anything serious in the future?

I have an appointemtn with a doctor soon, but I was hoping that some of you guys would know something.

PS: I had an ulcer due to overusing contacts (don't use them anymore) about 1 year ago.

Effects of low eye-ball pressure in the long-term?

Hmm... in theory, your eye balls may get deflated! Yes, deflated like a balloon.

In practical that never really happens.

If your eyeball pressure (scientific term = Intraocular pressure) remains low and there are trauma to the eye, the eye doctor may suspect a penetrating eye injury i.e. someone stuck a stick thru your eyeball and left a gaping hole! Fluids are drained off from the eye and that results in low eye pressure.

In this case, you will need to do a ultrasonic scan or MRI to rule out ocular injuries.

If there are no history of trauma, it is probably OK to have low eye pressure. Low pressure is definitely better than high pressure, which will increase the chance of getting Glaucoma

How much licorice root would you need to consume in order to significantly raise your blood pressure?

Just wondering, because I take 900 mg of licorice root gelcaps for ulcers and my blood pressure is fine...it has been proven medically to change your blood pressure, however.
----------

There is no easy answer to this because the concentrations of the phytochemicals in the root are going to vary from one plant to the next and even from one part of the plant to the next.

An extract or a tincture might be more potent than eating the direct food. A freeze dried sample might be more potent as well because the removal of the water concentrates everything else.  (+ info)

Can Amoxicillin cause increased blood pressure?

Well basically my blood pressure reading is usually around 102/52 with a heart rate of 45 bpm and I measure it once a week.

Now I have started the course of medication because of a painful mouth ulcer and it has increased to 116/74, but my heart rate has fallen to just 40 bpm (Which is lower than I have ever seen before).
----------

No it doesn't. The difference between the numbers aren't really that significant.  (+ info)

Does anyone have any upper abdominal pressure?

I've been having upper abdominal pressure for the last 2 years and it is only getting worse. It started before I started having severe anxiety 9 months ago. I've had every GI test possible done, I've even had some tests repeated recently but my doc couldn't find anything not even ulcers. I feel it most when I sit up for too long or bend down too much. Does anyone suffer from this because even though it is not painful, it is very uncomfortable.
----------

If you feel bloating, please see an OB-gyn. Abdominal pressure could mean many things, one of which could be endometriosis, etc. etc. Make sure these conditions are ruled out.  (+ info)

What is involved in debridement of pressure ulcers or decubitus?

There are two different kinds of debridement- one is done by the physician with a sharp implement to remove dead tissue and the other is done by certain ointments/medications to accomplish the same thing. The reason they do this is to help expose the good tissue underneath and help it to heal by filling the area where the old, dead tissue was.  (+ info)
