Lumbar radiculopathy...Can someone share their experience with me?

I have chronic lumbar radiculopathy, which i was told is a form of sciatica. If i don't take my back meds as scheduled i have pain and not a little discomfort. I do mean pain if i wait too long! After p/t on monday afternoon i was in so much pain.
I went home took my meds and went to bed. On tuesday was a day of nothing but pain and meds. On wednesday, was to the doctor who ordered me to the emergency room because of being in so much pain.
The ER doctor diagnosed me with Lumbar Radiculopathy. Through it all, no one can tell me why i have constant anti-inflammitory muscles in my lower back that sometimes trigger down to the back of my left leg and foot.
PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME THIS: WHY DO I HAVE CONSTANT MUSCLE SPASMS AND LOW BACK PAIN THAT THE ONLY WAY IT CAN BE CONTROLLED IS WITH MEDS?
Why would two MRI's show 2 different things. The first one showed clumping in the nerve root, the second one showed nothing. My doctor referred me to a nuerologist but workman
comp wont approve.
My doctors MRI showed a clumping in the nerve root. When I went to the emergency room before they gave me an MRI the gave me 2 injections for anti inflammatory and muscle relaxer.
I feel as though they should have done the MRI first before the swelling went down so they can see where the problem was exact.
Why wait when the meds are in me? My first MRI I had no meds in me and I was in pain during the MRI procedure..

See my point? The meds are a mask over the real problem that is causing spasms and inflamed lower back that really hurts all the time.
Was my MRI performed with contrast? what is that?

For the person that responded first.
the MRI was performed without contrast.

I have the same issues. They have a number of medications that are not pain killers. Also, have you gone to Physical therapy yet? It works a lot of the time, but is not used enough in my opinion.

In my opinion, the doctors really don't know what is going on most of the time. MRI's don't always show the problem. By the way, was your MRI performed with contrast?  (+ info)

Is it because of my C5 radiculopathy?

Hi.

I'm a college student diagnosed with chronic C5 radiculopathy (right upper extremity) and bilateral CTS. I'm right-handed and play guitar a lot and I've noticed that I can hardly palm mute anymore. I can't get through a whole verse without my right forearm feeling very fatigued. I experience a similar problem when I brush my teeth. I even brush my teeth with my left hand now.

My doctor says it's probably due to the radiculopathy and that the CTS is mild. However, after a couple of weeks of therapy, I still feel easy fatigability in my right arm. Could it be that it's just not my C5? Is there another possible neuropathy or is my palm-muting the problem and not the nerve impingement? The only test done to me was an EMG-NCV and the radiculopathy and the CTS were all that was found.

Thanks for reading my problem and thanks in advance to anyone who's able to help.
----------

I've got a C5 disc herniation with ostephytes and cervical degenerative disc disease. I often get the same fatigue. I hear the old "don't worry it's mild" cliche often as well....that doesn't stop it from being painful or difficult to live with does it? . If the tests you had didn't reveal anything further I'd suggest pushing for an MRI AND a second opinion. If your doctor isn't hearing your concerns then perhaps its time to find one that will.  (+ info)

What kind of doctor should be treating me?

Pulled muscle in back. Nothing revealed on MRI or X-ray, but something found in EMG test. There was electrodiagnostic evidence of radiculopathy on the right in the L4 region affecting my back and right leg. Orthopedic dr I have now suggested injection in spine. Don't care for him.
----------

I have completely crushed my L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs, I have never had any other treatments other than back exercises and stretches. Occasionally, my back acts up (usually after I've done something stupid) but it always subsides.

So here are some suggestions. Go to a physical therapist and learn how do do proper back exercises and stretches. Learn proper lifting technique. And, unless you develop intractable pain or muscle weakness, avoid anything invasive. I've seen too many people who have developed chronic pain, even after injections and surgery.  (+ info)

Any cure for C6 and C7 Radiculopathy for my spine?

Hi,

I recently encountered lots of neck and back pain.

Since my air bed was leaking and broke down in December 2008, I was sleeping on a very very old mattress which is very soft and sagging.

I slept on this old mattress only for two months, I already noticed a huge change on my back. That is, the aweful neck, arm and upper back pain.

I am a middle aged person. At this age, I know my muscle is no longer in my youth condition which is tight and supportive.

The pain just getting worse and worse everyday. So, I decided to sleep on air bed again. I purchased another new air bed just few days ago.

After sleeping on the new air bed, the pain condition improves. The pain is diminishing but on my upper and lower arm, I still can feel tingling and numbness on and off, and sometimes minor pain.

I research over the internet today, and my pain is probably due to C6 and C7 Radiculopathy of my spine.

Taking pain relieve drug can only temporarily stop my pain, and it will return to me the next day.

Does anyone know how to stop my left arm pain effectively without taking drug?

Of course, I know I should go see a Chiropractor, but this costs money.

Please help.

Thanks!

What can I do about early signs of thoracic radiculopathy?

I have pain in my upper thoracic region on my left. Worse on right and left lateral flexion of my cervical spine. Worse on sneezing and depression of my scapulae on the left. Tender in the rhomboid and infraspinatus and pecoralis muscles on the left too. No sensory motor or reflex changes. It's currently a dull pain and I believe exacerbated by using my laptop in bed and driving more often. I'm worried it's possibly a radiculopathy the physios I've seen at the hospital and privately are absolutely useless, the gp keeps pumping me full of cocodamol and ibuprofen which although gave me constipation and helped initally have now become non effective. I don't want this to progress further and I want the correct treatment any ideas?

What can I do for income while waiting for a hearing for my compenstaion case?

My Jobs insurance company doctor says I am ok to work and nothing is wrong with me.I have been diagnosed with lumbosacral- radiculopathy
according to my Mri and Emg
----------

You will forever have to change your lifestyle and/or the type of employment. For instance, I cannot tolerate sitting more than an hour or so without pain issues, thus having a job that requires sitting will not be suitable. Excessive bending at the waist also aggravates my back. When I was hurt on the job, my employer basically did not want me anymore and would not take me back and the court did nothing about it. You can do anything job you want and/or can find, so long as you follow the restrictions given to you by your treating physician. Been there done that. Good luck.  (+ info)

how serious is lumbosacral radiculopathy?.?

I had a 50 pound box fall on my back a year ago .I aggrevated the condition in september and I am now out of work because I have frequent spasm down my leg and back
I had know back problems before this accident
----------

look...
the story of the fallen box may not be the cause that resulted such a medical condition if being properly diagnosed..
anyway radiculopathy in general is a vague disease affecting a branch of the main nerve trunk ,it is easily diagnosed and treated...
but it takes some time,do not worry..  (+ info)

what is degeneration and radiculopathy?

I believe your question is eye related so I will try to answer as best I can.
I don't think you have the correct terminology to begin with.
Macular degeneration is degeneration of the macula where your vision come from. It is a spot in back of the eye in the retina.
They do not know what causes this,it is often times considered to be heredity.
I think you are refering to Maculopathy.
This too refers to a condition of the macula.
Both of these terms are difficult at best to describe on line in a few paragraphs.
Both conditions can lead to partial blindess or even total blindness over the years.
As far as I know there is no cure for macular degeneration though there are some eye specific vitamins available and though they can not prove they work, they can't prove that they cause hard so on the outside chance that they do work I recommend that you take them.
I do believe that Maculpathy is medically managable.
You need to help your doctor with your treatment by using an Amsler Grid.
Let your doctor know if you see even the slightest change in that Amsler Grid when you use it . . Properly and Regulary ! !
Opthalmologists (Eye Surgeons) deal with these diagnosis better because of their ability to treat them if medically treatable whereas optometrist(Eye Glasses doctors) who can only diagnose them so I suggest that you visit an Opthalmologist who is better equipped to diagnose and manage either problem  (+ info)
