Advice for raynauds disease?

Me and my mum suffer from primary raynauds disease which is a genetic codition that affects blood flow to fingers toes and sometimes the nose and ears. The cold makes our hands go numb and white and mine go blotchy and then when they warm up it's really painful. We've tried thermals and hand warmers and wristbands and gloves but nothing really worked and I wondered if anyone knows of any methods we haven't tried yet .. Please help!
----------

Thank heavens my raynauds isn't as bad as yours although it can get pretty irritating. This group has some useful leaflets and sells some products. You maybe know it all by now but you never know.

Anyone been diagnosed with "Raynauds Phenomenon"?

I was recently diagnosed with "Raynauds phenomenon". I was really concerned that I had some sort of blood circulation issue, but my Dr. assures me that it is Raynauds Phenomenon. I would love to hear from people who have also been dianogsed with this and the symptoms you have......

I've already researched it and read on it.. I don't want another website on it, but just responses from people who personally have it themselves and their symptoms. Thanks!
----------

Raynaud's phenomenon is generally associated with an autoimmune disease. I got diagnosed with Raynaud's when I was twelve and after all my toes had turned black! They were considering partial amputation.

The doctors never worried about checking for any of the autoimmune conditions associated with it because I was 12 years old and that those disease typically don't happen to someone that young. It turns out I did have it and for the rest of my teenage years I was called lazy and irresponsible by everyone. I would have to ask to take naps at the nurse's office and when I would come back from school and go straight to bed...

Later when I was 16 I was finally diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome.

Personally, I oppose taking an kind of medication for any kind of illness. The medications that were given to me for Raynaud's are know to decalcify your bones and makes me wonder about the effects of giving that to a grown 12 yo child. The medications given to me for sjogren's syndrome were straight up awful and are probably one of the major contributor to the fact I got diabetes later on down the road (steriods, but I also suspect methotrexate).

10 years ago I stopped consuming wheat gluten and my numbers for sjogren's syndrome went down 50 fold. The numbers still indicated sjogren's syndrome but the levels were astonishingly lower. I did feel much better. About 5 years after I stopped consuming gluten I was still seeing improvements one of which was the fact that I no longer had Raynaud's phenomenon.

As an immediate treatment I would recommend to completely stop all caffeine consumption or any cigarette smoke (your own or second hand) as that has immediate effects on your condition. When your feet or hands get cold, make sure to take care of the situation immediately by going to the bathroom and warming them with warm water or the hair drier. If this happens on your feet, I suggest accepting the embarrassment and taking care of it.

Furthermore, you should get tested for autoimmune diseases associated with it and discontinue consuming gluten for a year. If you have not seen any improvements in your health, I suppose you could add gluten back into your diet...  (+ info)

ways to deal with raynauds disease?

i have an extremely bad case of raynauds disease, my hands are NEVER a normal colour, even wen im in a hot bath! gloves and keeping warm dusnt help, its really bringing me down, pls help !!!
----------

I have raynaud's myself and it runs in my family. In the winter at work I have to wear the gloves with the tips cut off so I can type they help. There is a cream a doctor can prescribe as well if your feet get to cold try to spray anti perisprent deordorant on your feet helps prevent them from sweating that will cause them to get cold with raynaud's. I have heated mittens I use while watching tv and heated booties as well and a heated blanket. At work you can get one of those heated bags that you put in the microwave the key for raynaud's is to stay warm and direct heat is the best way. I hope this helps it has for me.  (+ info)

In Raynauds disease, what is an ESR test? (erythrocyte sedimentation). What is a normal result - mine was 10?

is this normal? At what point would it be abnormal and what would it mean if it was higher than 10?
----------

Primary RD has no discernible cause and here the ANA and ESR are typically negative. RD may also be secondary or due to another disease which is generally autoimmune or connective tissue in type. Here the ESR will be elevated in porportion to the activity of the underlying inflammation and disease. Causes includ Lupus, Scleroderma, Polymyositis, Rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogrens syndrome to name a few.
An elevated ESR may be an indicator of active inflammation or the presence of tumor.  (+ info)

dry skin, odd scarring bumps on face, neck, back and raynauds syndrome.....what could this be!?

scaly hands and thickened skin on hands and feet
swelling of any possible joint
circulation problems and changes
abnormal amounts of grey hairs all of a sudden
weight loss
gastrointestinal problems
itchy skin!

etc! i cant get a diagnosis i wanna say its lupus but w/ a rash that is noticable to everyone else ...
----------

I've read your other question and answers.

Psoriasis have not been mentioned.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psoriasis

It commonly causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin, although some patients have no dermatological symptoms. The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, called PSORIATIC PLAQUES (scaly hands and thickened skin on hands and feet), are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production. Skin rapidly accumulates at these sites and takes on a silvery-white appearance.

(swelling of any possible joint)
Psoriatic arthritis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psoriatic_arthritis

You have also stated that, "your blood results are normal."
There are no special blood tests or diagnostic procedures for psoriasis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psoriasis#Diagnosis

Psoriasis can be drug-induced. Drug-induced psoriasis may be induced by beta-blockers, lithium, antimalarials, terbinafine, calcium channel blockers, captopril, glyburide, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, interlukens, interferons, and lipid-lowering drugs.

It affects the scalp too. Hair? I'm not sure.

It explains the itchy skin too.
Note: some patients have no dermatological symptoms, which means sometimes the rash is not noticeable.  (+ info)

raynauds phenomenon contagious?

ok so i have raynauds and i told my friends i swear its not contagious but i cant find out where to show them wrong cuz one of them thinks she has it...could anyone find a website or something and give me the link please?
----------

Raynauds is a circulatory issue. You would make medical history if you had a contagious circulatory problem.
If she happens to have it, it is coincidental.  (+ info)

medical people.my ana came back normal but my dr says I have Raynauds?

is this possible?
----------

Yes, in fact even necessary for the Primary Raynaud's diagnosis.

PRIMARY RAYNAULD'S - diagnosis criteria:

*Periodic vasospastic attacks of pallor or cyanosis for at least 2 years
*Normal nailfold capillary pattern
*Negative antinuclear antibody test
*Normal erythrocyte sedimentation rate
*Absence of pitting scars or ulcers of the skin, or gangrene in the fingers or toes

Compare with SECONDARY RAYNAULD'S

*Periodic vasospastic attacks of pallor and cyanosis
*Abnormal nailfold capillary pattern
*Positive antinuclear antibody test
* Abnormal erythrocyte sedimentation rate
*Presence of pitting scars or ulcers of the skin, or gangrene in the fingers or toes

A positive ANA is often associated with connective tissue/autoimmune disease which can implicate Raynauld's secondarily.

I hope this helps - good luck.  (+ info)

Raynauds Disease - how do you deal with it.?

Any personal details such as drug/cream treatment much appreciated
----------

Obviously you should keep warm by wearing gloves and socks. You can also buy handwarmers to keep in your pockets. They sell those at camping stores usually. You should also try to avoid stress, medicines that can constrict blood vessels such as decongestants and touching cold objects. Avoid foods and doing things that constrict blood vessels such as drinking caffeinated drinks and smoking. Also try to stay out of cold environments such as refrigerated or highly air conditioned spaces.  (+ info)
