where is rheumatoid arthritis most common in the world?

and i have a few more questions how do you prevent rheumatoid arthritis and if you anyone knows any websites where i can find out these answers it would be really helpful. because i need to do a project on this and this is all i need. oh and what is the life expectancy if someone has r.a.
----------

I have RA (rheumatoid arthritis) and I found that reading real people stories and get advice from is the biggest help.
One place I got to all the time is:
http://rawarrior.com/
Her name is Kelly Young and she and her website have been a blessing for newbies like me.

The other one I visit is:
www.WebMD.com.
They have lots of info on RA too along with message boards that you can talk to real people about what is going on with RA.

P.S. I also agree with what Heather said.  (+ info)

Is there a organization that helps people with rheumatoid arthritis?

I have a friend that has RA. She needs her medications, but the doctor she use to go to will not give her a prescription for it. She really needs HELP! Is there an organization for people that have rheumatoid arthritis?
She is on Medicare and Medicaid and totally disabled, with a fixed income.

Should I have my right side of my thyroid removed due to a bothersome nodule?

I have a 1cm thyroid nodule on the right side of my thyroid. The doctor says it is probably not cancerous. But it does bother me. I have pressure in my neck all the time that is bothersome. It also effects swallowing meats and large vitamins. Should I have it removed? What is the surgery like? Will I have to stay in the hospital?
----------

check into radiation therapy as well. My doc highly recommended it instead of the surgery. I had a goiter that went almost all the way around my neck. Radiation therapy is easy you take a couple of pills and your thyroid no longer works. If you do it though you will take a pill for the rest of your life in place of your thyroid. I'm not sure if the treatment will help your situation or not. Ask your Dr about it to be sure.  (+ info)

Can one contact fibromyalgia if one has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis?

For the past several weeks I have had pain in my muscles as well as my joints. I take 10mg of prednisone daily and methotrexate injections once a week for the rheumatoid. For the first time ever, I have had pain in the area of my clavicles today.
----------

One can have Fibromyalgia alone or with any other illness one can be diagnosed with.

I'm not sure what you mean by "contact fibromyalgia..." or if you meant "contract fibromyalgia..." Either way, it doesn't really matter. There seems to be as many theories as to what causes fibro as there are symptoms.  (+ info)

Should a 30 yr male old worry about a subcentimeter lung nodule on the lower left side?

The lung nodule was found accidentally during a CT scan of my chest. I was told not to worry because of my age and the area the nodule is located, but I'm still worried. Can anyone with knowledge on the subject help please?
----------

"Nodules" in the Lungs are common. While I understand it can be daunting to hear that you have something growing in your lung, they are quite common. I normally see SPNs at around 2-4 CM and considering yours was sub centimeter, I really wouldnt loose sleep over it.

And you are thirty. I would find it hard to get a thirty year old who did not have an SPN.

You can compare it to a polyp in your colon, lots of people have them ,and as long as they are small (and your SPN is tiny) you should be ok.

If it really bugs you, got back to the physician who did the CT of your chest in 7 months and ask for another. Then you can compare for changes. Or get a Biopsy if it makes you at ease of mind. But honestly, you are ok.  (+ info)

I have a nodule on my little finger that when squeezed thick clear stuff comes out of it. What is this?

My doctor says this is the beginning of arthritis. My finger does hurt sometimes because I type a lot. The finger is a little bit bigger than the one on the other hand. This nodule has been there for quite sometime and I would like to get rid of it!
----------

It may possibly be a cyst. Talk to your Dr about getting rid of it.  (+ info)

What can help my mom's rheumatoid arthritis pain?

my mom has had rheumatoid arthritis for about 9 years now, and she had a knee replacement about 6 years ago... lately her arthritis has been causing her a lot of pain that she loses sleep over... medications that her doc gives her do not help. Are there any natural remedies or vitamins she can take to help ease the pain?
----------

My sympathies to your mother (and you). I know all too well the pain of RA...

At the moment, I am in the same predicament. Lots of pain, loss of sleep. The pain makes sleeping impossible, and the loss of sleep makes the pain greater. It's a vicious cycle.

All I can suggest is that your mother speak with her rheumatologist and/or family practitioner and tell them everything that is going on. They may be able to prescribe a sleep aid along with the pain meds.

Vitamins and supplements? I don't know of anything that eliminates pain, although I *do* notice some lessening of pain when I eat fresh or frozen pineapple, or tart cherries. The bromelian in pineapple is an anti-inflammatory, and can be obtained as an OTC supplement. Ditto the cherry supplements. Both of these seem to be perfectly safe.

Some people swear by melatonin as a sleep aid, but I've heard also that it shouldn't be taken with certain meds and for lengthy periods of time, so I hesitate to recommend this. Your mom should probably speak with her doctor about this. Perhaps a glass of warm milk?

Deep breathing, relaxation, prayer, meditation, white noise (a fan in the background) and sounds of nature (cd's of waves crashing and waterfalls) can also contribute to a relaxed state and a restful sleep environment. It's important that your mom be able to relax, as pain causes stress and stress increases pain ... I know, it's so hard, and my heart aches for her.

If your mom is able, a good long soak in a hot bath would do wonders, but 9 years into her disease this may no longer be a possibility. I know I can't sink into a tub, and oh, how I wish.

Maybe your mother would appreciate a gentle massage from her very caring daughter. That or a hug would do wonders.

Hope I was able to help in some small way, and only the best to both of you.  (+ info)

How is Rheumatoid Arthritis found in the blood?

I was tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis, I don't understand how it is found in the blood because i was blood tested for it.
----------

They usually just test for what's called RF (or, rheumatoid factor). It is not really specific to rheumatoid arthritis, but many people with rheumatoid arthritis will be positive for RF. Anti-CCP is another substance in the blood that can be measured. Again, it is not specific to rheumatoid arthritis, but it is a pretty good indicator that you may have rheumatoid arthritis if the anti-CCP is positive.  (+ info)

Is it possible that people with no swelling in their joints to have rheumatoid arthritis?

Do all the people who has been diagnosed for rheumatoid arthritis had swelling in some of their joints?
----------

No. It is the general rule, but not always. Over 80% of juvenile cases don't.
"Less than 20% of juvenile rhumatoid arthritis cases begin with fever and swelling in the joints, arthritis rash, swollen lymph nodes, GIT or gastrointestinal track disease, liver disease (non-infectious hepatitis), and a swollen spleen.

For these children, flu-like symptoms may precede the onset of the arthritis for months to years.

The child’s temperature may spike just over 100 F once or twice daily, often in the late afternoon or evening and then it quickly returns to normal. Chills are common. These children can be apparently well between attacks of fever."

And adults can have rheumatoid arthritis a long time before swelling appears. "For most people, joint symptoms develop gradually  (+ info)
