How much larger can a ring be re sized in proportion to its original size?

I found a gorgeous vintage ring that I simply adore, but it's much too small for my fingers. I was told that most jewellers won't do a resizing if it's more than 0.5 or 1 size up - and I'd need more than that for the ring to fit me (it's tiny). Does anyone know what the process is, and whether or not it can be resized any larger than 1 size?

Yes, it could probably be increased up to 3 sizes. But it may depend on what the ring is made of, and what the setting is like.

If a ring has a thick band and the metal is still soft, I have tapped the band out on a steel ring mandrel, to get it a half or full size larger. I'm not so sure that the metal would be that soft in an antique ring; it would likely cause the metal to crack.

When a jeweler increases a ring's size, they cut the band of the ring apart and solder in an extra piece into the band. If they can match up the gold color, it can be very hard to tell.

It does depend on the condition of the ring and the way the stones are set, if the ring is pulled too far out to make up for larger circumference, it could distort the stone setting or the design.

In sterling silver it depends on the stone and the design, because the whole piece needs to be heated up to same temperature to get the solder to flow. I'm not sure if a professional jeweler can work around this or not. Gold only needs the area where the heat is located to get the solder to flow to insert a new piece for the ring band.

I've had just a couple jewelry classes in college, your best bet is to get appraisals from a couple of qualified local jewelers.

I'm getting my lip pierced and I'm planning on doing it with a captive bead ring. I don't like studs at all but people are saying that the ring hurts a lot more than the stud. REALLY??!!
Sunshine, when you mean "uncomfortable" do you mean painful? Cos uh.. pain and discomfort are different in my book.
I really don't see how it would be - I think a labret stud would be more painful during insertion, just because it's externally threaded & a cbr isn't. Also, who is saying that rings are more painful? Unless they work in a tattoo shop, you probably shouldn't listen to what they're telling you.  (+ info)

What happens if you wash a ring with soap?

I just got this really cool Kingdom Hearts Ring (ingore if you dont know) and i dont want to shower with it but the only way it would come out is if i wash it with soap them pull gently (have it my thumb) So. Anything Happens to the ring after you washed it a lot of times with soap?
Depends what it is made of... Use toothpaste to take it off since toothpaste is used as a mild jewellery cleaner. Then you can clean it at the same time whenever you take it off.  (+ info)

Hey, There is these little shops which has silver rings and other different stuff and you can let the man write her name on or the promise ring you wanted, but this is a cheap thing. you can get your troy ounces and silver and go to a jewelery shop let them make her a promise ring, I t is a bit pricey I guess, It depends on the shop and I am sure your GF deserves that. Use a' brass cleaner' on your ring. (and if you do use the clear nail polish only use it on the inside of the ring) it will eventually wear off

Can a tongue ring cause your lower front teeth to shift forward by the pressure from the barbell?

I've had my tongue pierced for four years. In the last 6 months I've noticed that my front bottom row of teeth has shifted forward and now have a couple gaps behind them. You can't see it when I smile or talk, but it still worries me that it's going to get worse.

Do you think this is happening because of the tongue ring or something else? (I do not have wisdom teeth on the bottom so it's not that.)

I can guarantee it isn't from the tongue ring. The only thing a tongue ring will do to your teeth is chip them up. Teeth are always shifting, until they find an equilibrium from the force of your tongue, your lips on the other side, and your opposing teeth which can push them either way depending on what type of bite you have. How old are you? you could still be growing. 6 quarts water
10 cups brewed tea
5 cups sugar
4 (12 oz.) cans frozen orange juice concentrate; thawed
4 (12 oz.) cans frozen lemonade concentrate; thawed
1 (12 oz.) can frozen pineapple juice concentrate; thawed
4 liters ginger ale; chilled

In large container, combine first 6 ingredients; stir until sugar is dissolved. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Just before serving, transfer to punch bowl; stir in ginger ale.


"Ice Ring Wreath"

4 cups cold distilled water; divided
3 large limes
1 (12 oz.) pkg. fresh cranberries

Pour 1 cup of the distilled water into a 4 1/2-cup ring mold lightly coated with nonstick cooking spray. Peel limes, keeping peel in large pieces. Using miniature tree cookie cutters, cut trees from the peel. Place shapes upside down in top of ring mold. Save lime pulp for another use. Place cranberries between tree shapes. Rearrange if necessary before freezing; freeze until solid.
Gently add remaining water; freeze. To use, wrap bottom of solidly frozen mold in a warm towel until loosened or dip mold in pan of warm water. Float ice ring, fruit side up, in cold punch.  (+ info)

How can I keep a silver ring from turning green?

I have a ring that not only turns me finger green but the intricate band is turning green as well.

I have tried silver cleaner, jewelry cleaner and clear nail polish but I can't get the green out of the ring!! UGH!

True silver will not turn green, or turn your finger green. It must be costume jewelry. The material in the ring is reacting with the oils and natural chemicals of your skin.

But try some toothpaste and an OLD toothbrush. The brush will help get into the nooks and crannies of the intricate band, and provide a good scrubbing and the foaming action of the paste should get everywhere. Rinse well with water and pat or air dry. This should help get the green gone. I know it worked for me. Might take some time and effort.

Afterwards, when clean, you can then apply the clear nail polish to make a barrier so that the reaction can't happen as easily again. Good Luck!  (+ info)

What would it cost to have a ring repaired?

My grandmother gave me a ring with 2 pearls, one of which has come out. I have no idea if the ring is actually worth anything but I treasure it was a gift from her. I have the pearl that came out and would like to have it repaired. Any idea of the cost?
most jewellers will (if they do repairs) give you a free quote on a repair.
