Like what's a very easily spread, hard to fight, deadly disease? I was just reading a question about the Black Plague, which got me thinking, but even that (which was a huge problem hundreds of years ago) wouldn't be very hard to fight with today's medicines. Any ideas?

I have to do a powerpoint project for anatomy on a disease. I also have to write a 6 page research paper on it. I have no idea what disease to do though. What is an interesting disease that I can easily write 6 pages on?
I think that part of the reason for the fall of the Roman Empire was the fact that they started to travel to more distant places as they got wealthier and they eventually brought back a rat on a ship that was infected with the bubonic plague. I saw that on the History Channel on a show about the Dark Ages. The fall of the Roman Empire was followed by the Dark Ages. There was a lot of turmoil and war and whatnot because there was no stabilizing force controlling Europe.

How serious is getting a swollen brain from Behcet's Disease? My brother had a swollen brain after vomiting/fainting out of nowhere. He got surgery and after, doctors purposely put his brain to sleep (induced coma? I think). Doctors found out that what he has is Bechet's Disease. Is this disease serious? Will my brother be able to wake up? Will doctors wake him up?
Behçet's disease is an autoimmune disease that results from damage to blood vessels throughout the body, particularly veins. In an autoimmune disease, the immune system attacks and harms the bodies' own tissues. The exact cause of Behçet's disease is unknown. Most symptoms of the disease are caused by vasculitis (an inflammation of the blood vessels). Inflammation is a characteristic reaction of the body to injury or disease and is marked by four signs: swelling, redness, heat, and pain. Doctors think that an autoimmune reaction may cause the blood vessels to become inflamed, but they do not know what triggers this reaction. Under normal conditions, the immune system protects the body from diseases and infections by killing harmful "foreign" substances, such as germs, that enter the body. In an autoimmune reaction, the immune system mistakenly attacks and harms the body's own tissues. Behçet's disease is not contagious; it is not spread from one person to another. Behçet's disease affects each person differently. The four most common symptoms (as listed) are mouth sores, genital sores, inflammation inside of the eye, and skin problems. Inflammation inside of the eye (uveitis, retinitis, and iritis) occurs in more that half of those with Behçet's disease and can cause blurred vision, pain, and redness. Other symptoms may include arthritis, blood clots, and inflammation in the central nervous system and digestive organs.

well...lead is also toxic...it can be devastating. so...based on the argument that alcohol is toxic and cause you damage..are we all diseased because we can't take lead? drinking something toxic can cause a disease, but the fact of drinking it is not a disease...
what do you think?

Alcoholism doesn't fit this definition. As a consequence of alcoholism you'll have diseases that fit the definition (like cirrosis).
I don't think addictions are diseases. You drink because you want to. Nobody is forcing you, no virus is making you do that. You have to use a lot of will power to go get the booze and drink it. Same for drugs, same for too much food or unhealthy food. Socialist groups want to call addictions diseases and put government regulations to protect the public. No government program has ever done anything to improve the situation because you can't control the will of the population by law (on the long run). Addictions is something you do to yourself by your own will. You can control yourself, if you don't is because you don't want. When you have a disease, you can't control it.

There are several factors that are more common in people without Parkinson's disease and may actually protect them from the disease. What are the 3 factors and why do they seem to protect these individuals?
Well research shows that most do not smoke or drink- but I hate that one because most people who don't smoke or drink have that in common with every other disease. Those things just make you more susceptible to everything not just Parkinsons.

I can mention at least one thing. Dopamine levels in the brain. A lot of people don't know this but Parkinsons is actually the opposite of Schizophrenia. Parkinsons occurs when Dopamine levels are too low...Schizophrenia happens with Dopamine levels are too high. So if fluctuating Dopamine levels run in your family Parkinson's is a higher risk. Schizophrenics who take too much medication to lower their levels get muscular ticks like those with parkinsons... and those with parkinsons that take too much parkinson medication to lower their levels and control their ticks begin to see and hear things that are not actually there.  (+ info)

I believe they get it from contaminated water. The bird drinks the water and can spread the disease to other birds. I think that humans can possibly get it too.

I knew a lady who suffered terribly from a severe, deteriorating, disease, and over a few years the bones throughout her body broke and did not heal.
She eventually couldn't move at all and died from pneumonia.
