Do you always go into shock after a traumatic event?

When something traumatic happens to you, such as getting shot or being in an accident, will you always go into shock? Or is the shock directly related to your blood pressure? If you are a chill person, are you less prone to go into shock than someone who is more uptight and tense?
You guys are great...I'm totally fine. I was just watching an action movie and I was wondering why the characters in the story never go into shock, despite being shot several times, falling off a building, and being hit by a car. I was wondering if it was at all possible for them to be like that.
I think it depends on the intensity of the trauma.
Sometimes people block out their feelings for a long time.
This helps the person be able to cope immediately after the trauma.

Pathologically, it's a collapse of circulatory function, caused by severe injury, blood loss, or disease, and characterized by pallor, sweating, weak pulse, and very low blood pressure.

It happened last night, very quickly. It was my very first accident. I was so scared, i had no idea of what had happened. I cried and a couldnt stop shaking. Luckily, i was only injured by the seat belt, like when the car jolted, and managed to get away with only a few bruises and sprains on my chest and ribs and neck. Both cars were totalled.

From what I see on TV, the men like me see so strong mentally and when they see someone die or bleed, they don't get scared or battle shocked, and only the women do. And also, do men ever get vulnerable to PTSD?

PTSD was considered, in the past, to be only experienced by soldiers who had been in combat. They called it "Shell Shock"

Stop thinking about the past and think about the future. You can't change the experience so turn it into a positive. What did you learn from this traumatic experience? I am sure its made you a stronger person. Learn to live with it. If you must talk to someone about it until you've accepted the experience and can move on and not let it hold you back from enjoying live. Lives to short to focus on the bad.  (+ info)

Definitely. OCD can be triggered by lots of different things. For example when my dad was young his dad died at the age of 33. Ever since then any task my dad had to complete had to be with in 33 minutes or he thought he was going to die. My OCD triggered years ago when I was in the 5th grade. I was watching a movie at a friends called "the others" and then became afraid of all old things such as our piano or grave yards. If anyone touched the piano they HAD to wash their hands. I was afraid of "death germs". Even though many things can trigger OCD, like a traumatic experience, that isn't the cause of it. OCD is caused by a low level of serotonin in the brain. This can often be genetic or can come from other disorders such as anxiety disorders. But there are many different stages of Ocd and can be triggered by different events depending on how the brain handles the events.  (+ info)

I'm doing a research paper on the shift from labelling people with shell shock in war times to now calling it post traumatic stress disorder. What's the differences between the 2? Why was it renamed??
They are the same. They changed the name because it just doesn't apply to veterans anymore. Many victims of childhood abuse and/or trauma also suffer from PTSD. Others suffer from this Disorder as well. Hope this helps. t.  (+ info)

How would a person react to the total traumatic amputation of the hand?

I know it's a little morbid, but I need to know. Please help me. I need to know how intense the pain is, if enough blood can be lost from the injury in five minutes for the person to go into shock, and what a person experiencing this will think. Please don't tell me about phantom pain and other long term reactions. I need immediate reactions.
The person might go into shock from the pain alone. It would be excruciating. The blood loss won't cause shock, but there would be enough blood loss for that person to die if the wound is allowed to just bleed. Unless the hand is severed with a light saber, in which case it will be instantly cauterized. But the pain might still cause shock, which can be fatal.  (+ info)
