Why do people lose weight when they have short bowel syndrome?

We had discussed short bowel syndrome in class the other day, and touched on the topic of how it causes people to lose weight. What are a few reasons why? Atleast two different reasons would be very much appreciated. :)

Most people don't realize how much waste can be trapped inside our bodies. Experts estimate that most people have 10-15 of waste trapped to the inside of their colon walls. Imagine how unhealthy this is with all these toxins sitting inside us. Oprah had a guest on her show that talked about how we need to make sure that we clean our bodies of this rubbish.  (+ info)

In Short Bowel Syndrome, why is it necessary to use a Central line?

why do we use a central IV line for TPN?
i know oral route cannot be used, but for clarification, my question is more about central vs. peripheral route.

----------

TPN is a very concentrated nutritional formula and cannot be given through peripheral veins as it is irritating to the vein. By giving it through a central line into a central vein the TPN gets diluted quickly as there is a greater volume and flow in a central vein versus a peripheral one.   (+ info)

After having surgery for colon cancer, how do I best handle short bowel syndrome, malabsorbtion of nutrients?

I have been using codine to control my bowels but I would prefer some other product as this leaves me very tired and it doesn't do much good for me. Any other ideas?

Short Bowel Syndrome

Short bowel syndrome is a group of problems affecting people who have had half or more of their small intestine removed. The most common reason for removing part of the small intestine is to treat Crohn's disease.

Diarrhea is the main symptom of short bowel syndrome. Other symptoms include cramping, bloating, and heartburn. Many people with short bowel syndrome are malnourished because their remaining small intestine is unable to absorb enough water, vitamins, and other nutrients from food. They may also become dehydrated, which can be life threatening. Problems associated with dehydration and malnutrition include weakness, fatigue, depression, weight loss, bacterial infections, and food sensitivities.

Short bowel syndrome is treated through changes in diet, intravenous feeding, vitamin and mineral supplements, and medicine to relieve symptoms.

Treatment options:

Cases of short bowel syndrome that don't resolve in time need lifelong treatment. The aim of treatment is to provide symptom relief. Strategies may include:

Special diet - including high kilojoule, high nutrition, low fat and low residue foods.
Vitamin and mineral supplements.
Medications to slow peristalsis.
Bile salt-binding medications.
Medications to reduce stomach acid, if too much acid is a contributing factor.
In severe cases, a liquid diet given intravenously.
In severe cases, a small intestine transplant operation may be considered.

Hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless!  (+ info)

short pieces of flat stool....could it be Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

I never noticed until now that from time to time in my bowel movement I have short pieces of flat shaped stool or close to flat shaped. This usually occurs if I have a stomach cramp after I eat and it goes away if I make the bowel movement or if I get the feeling in my stomach and I kind of force it out when I don't really need to. I've made an appointment to see the Gastroenterologist. But what do you think it means? could this be irritable bowel syndrome? I don't have a family history of colon cancer an my family claims they've had this kind of bowel movement too. Aren't I too young to have colon cancer so wouldn't this most likely be IBS? If I eat greasy foods or dairy products I usually get stomach pains afterwards
I'm 26 years old

It could be that you have a polyp or hard stool in your rectum causing your stool to flatten as it exits. If it does not get better I would definately call a doctor.  (+ info)

i suffer from short bowel syndrome and i now have a blockage what will happen now?

had major surgery january this year to emove 6 metres of my bowel and the bit of bwel i now have left is now blocked, because i was in hospital for 4 and half months i am now afraid to go back into hospital. i know i need to but i was wondering if anything else could be done to prevent me having to go back into hospital
----------

How do you know it's blocked if you haven't been seen? My point is.....you need to be seen right away. They may be able to clear the blockage (if that's what it is) with antibiotics. If you don't get treated, you could end up with a colostomy bag.  (+ info)

What is short bowel syndrome?

This syndrome is a group of symptoms that occur when half or more of the small instestines have been removed, such as with a disease like Crohn's. Some of the symptoms that occur are diarrhea, malnutrition and dehydration. The small instestine, in a healthy body, absorbs a lot of the water, vitamins and other nutrition during food digestion. When a large portion of the intestines are removed, the absorbtion is hindered...thereby causing the dehydration and malnutrition. The "syndrome" can be treated with nutrtional supplements and other medication.  (+ info)
