When a block of calcium in the cervical neck area breaks apart what damage does it cause ?

I was in an automobile accident.Somrthing sounded like it snapped in half in my brain. The doctor said that a block of calcium caused from arthritis, located in my cervical neck area broke. Now when I turn my head left or right I hear a crunching sound. Can anything be done about this and will it cause irrepairable damage?
----------

There's nothing you can do about it on your own, but it can and probably should be treated if it is causing problems. The calcium will eventually dissolve on its own, but continued presence of the calcium will eventually lead to arthritis in the joints if it causing the bones to grind together. A shot of cortisone may be all that's needed, or maybe ultrasound to break up the calcium.  (+ info)

How will I know when to replace my Braun foil and cutter block?

I purchased a Braun Activator Shaver model 8585 last year, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it got very noisy. It still shaves OK, but makes a ton of noise compared with about a week ago. I am thinking it it too early to replace the foil and cutter block as one website suggests one should replace them every 18 months. It has not been near 18 months yet, and you know they tell you to replace them sooner than needed just to make more money. I went to the Braun website, and it was useless. I am wondering whether I need to replace the foil and cutter block or send it in as it is still under warranty? I hate to send it in as I don't want to be without it for long.
----------

I used to work in a drugstore and I sold these items to men regularly. In my experience I noticed in talking with these customers, that how coarse their beards were, and how long they went in between shaves, determined when they changed their elements. I suggest that if you are experiencing any nicks and cuts, or any other abnormality it's time to replace.  (+ info)

What is the difference between sun screen and sun block?

I always thought it was the same thing, but when I went to the store to buy some, I noticed that they were in different packages and at different prices. The sun block was in a bottle and more expensive and the sun screen was in a tube and was cheaper.

Is one more effective than the other?
----------

Most people use the terms sunblock and sunscreen interchangeably. They are not the same though.
Sunscreens are made of chemicals that absorb ultraviolet light( UVA and UVB) so that it doesn't reach your skin.

On the other hand, sunblock physically blocks or deflects the sun's UV rays . This includes sunblock with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

Do not used micronised titanium products. Smaller particles of titanium tend to enter the skin and cause damage. Stick with the un-micronised stuff

Use sun block rather than sunscreen. Sunblock lies on top of the skin rather than getting absorbed by it

Use broad spectrum sunblocks.
Eat for sun protection: load up on natural anti-oxidants in your diet. Include fresh berries, green tea, spirulina and as many other natural anti-oxidants as you can.
Cover up in the sun: the clothing, hats and glasses with afford lots of protection.
Use natural sunscreens like shea butter.
Use natural anti tanners like real lemon juice.

Broad spectrum sunscreen;

If the sunscreen is broad spectrum with an SPF ( Sun Protection Factor) of over 15 it is likely to shield the wearer against UVB and short UVA rays

If it contains avobenzone, zinc oxide, or titanium dioxide it is more likely to be effective against all UVA rays

The American Association of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that a "broad spectrum" sunblock with an SPF of at least 15 that is applied daily to all sun exposed areas, then reapplied every two hours. However, in some recent clinical trials, sunblocks with SPF 30 provided significantly better protection than sunblocks with SPF15. Therefore at UCSF, we recommend sunblocks with SPF of at least 30 with frequent reapplication.

What reduces the effectiveness of sunscreen?
How much protection your sunscreen offers depends on many factors, including how likely your skin is to burn (your skin type), the amount and type of sunscreen used, how often the sunscreen is applied, and how intense the UV rays are.

In addition, many factors can make sunscreen less effective. These include:

High humidity
Sweating
Drying or rubbing your skin with a towel
Swimming, showers or other contact with water

How can I block light and noise in my baby's room?

I have a 3 month old and her room is very sunny and noisy, so she keeps waking up during naps. Her room has bay windows so I need to cover 4 of them. I would like to find an affordable blind that can block light and noise that is affordable (since we are renting and we'll stay here only for a year) and still look cute. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!
----------

I don't know what kind of curtains would be good on a bay window, but as for the noise you could put a fan in your baby's room. It's a very inexpensive way to block noise. My daughter is almost 9 months and she has had a fan in her room since she was born. I turn it on every time she takes a nap or goes to sleep at night (just make sure it's not blowing directly on her) and she never wakes up from noises in the house and we don't have to worry as much about being quiet. To block the light in her room I just hang up a princess quilt her aunt made her whenever she's sleeping and take it down the rest of the time because it blocks a LOT of light.  (+ info)

Is there anything to block your sense of smell?

I work as a CNA and as such we have to deal with changing the elderly if they have and accident. We're not supposed to react badly to it but sometimes it smells really bad. I've seen on certain crime shows when they are doing an autopsy that they use some kind of gel under their nose to block out the smell. Is there really something like that I could buy. I'll take any other suggestions.
----------

Vicks works, as someone else has said. Another thing that works well is to take a wipe before you get started and smell it, sometimes the perfumes on it will hide the smell for me. Also, the longer you let someone sit in urine the worse it smells, so changing them more often will def. help with that part. As for BM's theres not too much you can do other than change it as soon as you notice and try the vicks trick.  (+ info)
