Sleep Paralysis?


Hey I have been suffering from a condition called Sleep Paralysis. Is there anyone that has this that has consulted a doctor or uses any remedies to calm or eliminate this? It would be very helpful, I'm tired of dealing with this 2-3 times a week.

This is one confusing and awful condition(I think!) I had it since I was around 12 or so. Mine was awful and hard to describe to someone who had no idea what I was talking about. I never did go to the Dr. for it, but there were periods of time I wouldn't have an episode for months! Then I'd have many in a night(or day if I was napping), and sometimes every week or so. Then a year and a half ago, I was suffering from bad anxiety/panic attacks. I was put on Paxil CR and low and behold my sleep paralysis also disappeared! I may have one or two small episodes..but nothing like they used to be. I've read SP can be caused by lack of sleep, but the fact that my anti anxiety/depression medication all but cured it, tells me it is a chemical imbalance. I'm not sure if a Dr. would prescribe something like this for it, but it's worth a shot. Good Luck :)  (+ info)

Sleep paralysis?


I'm having sleep paralysis episodes more and more. Before I only had them once every few months, but now I'm getting them once every two weeks. I've noticed they happen if I take a nap in the middle of the day, but they happen at night, too. Are there any ways to make them less frequent, or help them?

I have episodes of sleep paralysis.
It was really bad in my late teens and drove me batty in my 20's. The themes that the brain comes up with when your experiencing sp is unnerving.
As I got older they became less and less frequent.
I was also diagnosed with refractory rls/plmd.
Have a sleep study done to find out whats going on.
If sp leads you to avoid sleeping see a doctor.
The anxiety that sleep paralysis causes may need to be addressed.  (+ info)

sleep paralysis?


I think its called sleep paralysis when you wake up but your eyes won't open and you can't move except breathe through your nose until you wake up. I've gotten that 3 nights in a row is it bad and it only lasted about a minute every time I got it.
Now it seems easier to control it so its weird also.

Is it harmful?

Sleep paralysis is most often associated with narcolepsy, a neurological condition in which the person has uncontrollable naps. However, there are many people who experience sleep paralysis without having signs of narcolepsy. Sometimes it runs in families. There is no known explanation why some people experience this paralysis. It is not harmful, although most people report feeling very afraid because they do not know what is happening, and within minutes they gradually or abruptly are able to move again; the episode is often terminated by a sound or a touch on the body.

In some cases, when hypnogogic hallucinations are present, people feel that someone is in the room with them, some experience the feeling that someone or something is sitting on their chest and they feel impending death and suffocation. That has been called the “Hag Phenomena” and has been happening to people over the centuries. These things cause people much anxiety and terror, but there is no physical harm  (+ info)

What happens if you get sleep paralysis and someone else is in the room?


I just looked at a few videos of Sleep Paralysis and I heard that you are paralised and you see visions and stuff. What would happen if a real person was awake when you were having sleep paralysis, what would the awake person see?

My husband has been in the room many times while I have had it and nothing happens he just thinks im sleeping normally ... I have asked him to wake me if he notices me breathing strangely because I breathe really deep and loud to try and signal him to wake me up.  (+ info)

What causes Sleep Paralysis and how can i cure it?


Once in a while I awake from a nap or deep sleep and i'm unable to move, i struggle with my breathing and it feels like there's an enourmous weight pressing on my chest. I feel terrified, and on top of this, everytime i have this paralysis, i can see a tall, shadowy figure at the end of my bed. How can i cure this terrifying sensation?

ive had that before. dont listen to anyone if they say ghosts or whatever lol. LOLLOLO. its just so f'ing stupid. and dont waste time praying. it doesnt work. all it is is your body is a sleep state but your mind in a semi concious dream state. first. dont be scared of anything. becuase theres nothing really there, its just the same as a nightmare... forget about anything like that and that will eliminate any "scary figures". and just meditate before u fall asleep and get yourself into a good state of mind. things like whats happening to you is usually stress related. so try to chill out.  (+ info)

What are some effective ways to get rid of sleep paralysis?


Since I started college in the fall I have been getting sleep paralysis episodes. Some where I know I'm awake I just can't move or open my eyes. Others when something is laying on top of me telling me its going to kill me and I can't get away and I can't move, open my eyes and breathing is difficult. Also, I even have ones where I can hear someone walking toward and into my room but I can't move.

Bad sleep habits can contribute to sleep paralysis, and it makes sense that your sleep schedule might have been disturbed since you began college. Try to find ways to make your sleep more restful, with fewer interruptions.

When you have sleep paralysis, the most important thing is not to panic. Everyone is paralyzed during REM sleep; most people just don't notice it, most of the time. When sleep paralysis happens, you have started to awaken but the paralysis that is a natural part of REM has not yet worn off. It's essentially a signal that your body is not quite ready to wake up, and if you accept that fact and be patient, the experience should be a lot less unpleasant. It's important to understand that what you're experiencing isn't dangerous. The feeling of something trying to kill you, and having difficulty breathing, is largely created by your mind. You may not be in the most comfortable position, but you are physically okay, and if there was something truly wrong, your body would wake you up. Your mind is exaggerating the discomfort your body is feeling, and you'd be surprised at the strong effect that a little positive thinking and self-confidence can have on the experience.  (+ info)

Does Sleep Paralysis have any deeper meaning then just waking up during the REM stage?


I understand what sleep paralysis is. I just want to know if there are any other beliefs out there.

What is the difference between Common sleep paralysis and Hallucinatory paralysis?


They are two different type of sleep paralysis, can anyone please tell me the BIG difference? I thought they were pretty similiar.

What is sleep paralysis and does it make u get sick?


I just experienced sleep paralysis yesterday for the first time, i dreamed about someone waking me up which is impossible cause i always lock my door. and when i opened my eyes i saw this black figure standing beside my bed. I freaked out and cant scream and move, the next day i got fever, runny nose and cough, am i being possesed?

I'd describe SP as the threshold between dreams and reality. Normally before you go to sleep your whole body paralyzes so that you don't act out your dreams. Most of the time we are already at an unconscious state at this moment, but if you are conscious you experience the SP.

Your mind is still "awake", but your body begins to feel strange and the mind associats this to danger most of the time, so you get a very spooky feeling most of the time. And yes you can open your eyes in this moment and you hear weird repeating noises sometimes.

Still it has its advantages because you can sort of "leave" your body and enter the dream state right away into a lucid dream, which is a transition that is simply undescribable in words.

And no you are not being possesed, although it is a scary feeling the first time, if you relax thorugh the process you can actually benefit from it.  (+ info)

What causes sleep paralysis and night terrors?


I'm 16, and completely healthy and normal in all other regards, but for the last several years (since I was about 8 or 9) I've experienced sleep paralysis and night terrors, at the rate of about 1 or 2 times a month for the paralysis and more often for night terrors. Does anyone know what causes this?

Sleep paralysis is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the bodily paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations. (strange shapes, faces, ect.)
some causes are:Sleeping in an upwards supine position
Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
Increased stress
Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode. Also conscious induction of sleep paralysis is a common technique to enter a state of lucid dreams, also known as WILD .
Artificial sleeping aides, antihistamines
Recent use of hallucinogenic drugs
low levels of melatonin, a hormone. Usually, melatonin peaks at its highest levels in the middle of the night, but low levels, especially at night, preventing the stimulation of muscles, causing the body to not have the ability to move during dreams, and even when they wake up.

night terrors also have to do with REM sleep. In adults and children over the age of ten, they usually occure because of some sort of trauma the person has experienced.  (+ info)
