Are there any diseases from reptiles that can infect humans?

I am interested in infectious diseases and i know we can catch lots of things directly or indirectly from mammals and birds, and insects can carry pathogens that live in humans durring other stages of tehir life cycles but are there any pathogens we can catch from reptiles.

I didn't thnk there were any but i saw some summary stastics somewhere recently that inferedthere were at least some.

If you know of any please let me know pathogen type (protist, fungi, bacteria, virus, or big parasite) specis and strain of pathogen, and the disease caused.
are they actually infected with the pathogen living in them or do they just cary it like soil?
I never asked about pets? This is more an ecology of disease question.

My 1.5 meter (nearly full grown) python is doing just fine I know a bigger one is a stupid idea. so of us have been bvitten but it's not too much of a problem because his teeth are only 1mm long and his head is only about 12mm wide. I always wash my hands after handling him (mainly because he eats whole dead rats which i know carry nasty germs).

stick to the question please.

Can someone be a carrier of the HIV virus, pass it on to others but never develop the disease himself/herself?

I know this can happen with other diseases, but what about HIV?
----------

Well, if they are HIV positive, they "have the disease." What you mean is can they carry the virus and not develop AIDS, which is pretty much a collection of possible other diseases that get out of hand because the virus suppresses the immune system. So, yes. Some people can carry and never develop the secondary AIDS or can develop AIDS year later.  (+ info)

Is there a link between disease containing food products, Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases?

I'm looking for good resources to find this information. Rendered feed has been linked to MCD but since this practice has been common for decades are we missing important information on this topic? Is anyone in CDC even asking this question? Many new slow acting viruses and prions have been identified in recent years but are we doing any sampling to identify new ones before they cause disease, possibly an epidemic? What new protocols are being discussed by professionals in these disciplines to investigate high risk food processing practices that can produce new diseases?
----------

I can't possibly even try to distill all the science in the below articles. You would obviously understand them better than me, since your question is intelligent and articulate (thank you!)
My dad has AD and I never thought of that, so thanks for opening up a new line of reading for me.  (+ info)

can you give me some information about papora virus?and what is the the diseases?

That's papyrus virus. You get it from old scrolls. Alright, I'll behave now.

It's HPV, human papilloma virus, and it causes genital warts and cervical cancer. It's because it can also cause cancer that they've made a vaccine. In some cases it can also cause penile cancer, and in gays it causes anal warts.  (+ info)

Can you catch diseases (hsv) by using someone elses chapstick or lipgloss? What if you clean the tip before?

Can you catch diseases (such as herpes simplex virus) by using someone elses chapstick or lipgloss? Does it help if you clean the tip before use?
----------

of course you can. cleaning the tip may help but it is just a better idea to use your own. it is not worth the risk  (+ info)

How do diseases and illnesses start? Have these bacteria, viruses, germs, always been?

around and we don't notice them until humans get them? Have animals died from AIDS before humans were found with it? Do some remain dormant until climate changes occur and they become 'alive'? There have been many plagues, diseases, illnesses through time (Yellow fever, the black plague, HIV/AIDS, flesh-eating virus, etc) and I'm wondering how they begin.

Some theories say they were originally seeded here when the planet formed, or by meteorites that have crashed in to the planet over millions of years.  (+ info)

A person exposed to a new cold virus would not feel better for one to two weeks because?

A person exposed to a new cold virus would not feel better for one to two weeks because
A. no memory cells can be called upon, so adequate response is slow.
B. antigen receptors are not the same as for a flu virus to which she has previously been exposed.
C. it takes up to two weeks to stimulate immunologic memory cells.
D. V-J gene rearrangement must occur prior to a response.
E. specific B cells and T cells must be selected prior to a protective response.
----------

(A) is the correct answer.

Recall that antigens are foreign molecules that are specifically recognized by lymphocytes. When T-cells recognize antigens they have an increased response rate, however, that is not the case here. In this scenario, it does not matter that the antigen receptors are not the same for a previous pathogen because recognition is specific. (A) is correct because it is more direct than (B) which refers to another pathogen, answer (B) might as well be referring to ice-cream it does not impact how the system responds to (A).  (+ info)

Is it possible for two separate but similar diseases to breed or fuse and form a new disease?

Replace the word "disease" with virus or bacteria if you prefer. A simple yes or no will do.
----------

Bacteria are capable of absorbing bacterial plasmids from other organisms thus assuming some of there traits. They can also Sexually reproduce trading plasmids and creating organisms with traits from both organisms  (+ info)
