Spina Bifida?/????????

I'm doing a school project for school and we have to take care of an egg and pretend it's our baby, and i drew a card saying my baby had spina bifida. Now I'm writing a log of the baby's daily activities and if a baby is born with spina bifida do you immediately know if it has the disorder? Or do you find out during the pregnancy? Or does it gradually make itself known over time?! Also, what are some tips on caring for a baby with spina bifida?
Also, are babies with spina bifida in a lot of pain?
----------

Pain no. A baby with sb usually undergoes a surgery within 24 hours to either close the skin on the back or to remove a fluid filled sac that contains the spinal cord and membranes. Another surgery if necessary is usually done within the first week if the child has hydrocephalus. A shunt is placed into the brain to drain the spinal fluid from the ventricles of the brain. After that, surgery depends on the child and lesion. Paralysis may or may not be involved. Depending on the lesion of the defect, bowel and bladder issues are more then likely going to happen. Some of us cath. Some of us have bowel regimens that we do. Some of us walk, while others like myself are in wheelchairs. I have the worst case and am paralyzed from the chest down. I have also had close to 50 surgeries in my 26 years of life.  (+ info)

Spina bifida?

I went to the doctors today to review x-rays of my hip and spine reviewed and I turns out that I have some sort of spina bifida or something. I can't remember exactly what she said it was but she said it wasn't serious. I just had deformed vertabrae in the lumbar region of the spine. But does anyone know what this is or how to deal with the pain?
----------

There are different degrees of this condition. From what you state it appears that you have the mildest which is deformed vertebrae. The back of the vertebrae may not be closed completely or just deformed. There is no statement as to what symptoms are found. Ask the orthopedist for a referral to a physical therapist. The therapist will work on reducing the pain and increasing mobility and strength. For pain control at this time use ice on the area for ten to fifteen minutes.  (+ info)

Does a premature baby with spina bifida have a higher chance of not making it compared to a healthy baby?

My sister is 32 weeks pregnant(baby has Spina bifida) and we were wondering would the baby survive if born now? and would the baby have a smaller chance of survival because she has spina bifida?
----------

At 32 weeks the baby is viable outside of the womb but susceptible to more complications, not including the added problems from the spina bifida. Typically, the longer in the womb the better for the baby but there are always exceptions to that.

I hope you have a healthy nephew or niece regardless! I know having a child with a disorder like that can be very stressful but will be more than worth it in the long run. Good luck!  (+ info)

How to prevent an unborn baby developing spina bifida?

I have just found out I'm pregnant, only 2 weeks. I take Epitunitan (Phenytoin), an anti-epileptic drug which increases the risk of spina-bifida. I have already been perscribed a higher than usual dose of folic acid (5mg per day) Is there anything else I can be doing? Diet-wise etc? The pregancy wasnt planned so my body is in no way prepared for it
----------

as long as you are on folic acid, there is nothing else you can do. They really don't even know if folic acid helps anyways. Plus if you are already 2 weeks then you are past the spina bifida forming anyways, so it doesn't matter much. What happens has already happened.  (+ info)

How likely is it for a woman who has spina bifida to have a healthy pregnancy?

I am a woman with spina bifida, and I am pregnant. I am wondering what the chances are of me having a healthy baby.
----------

an increased risk of urinary tract infection
a risk of pressure sores
an increased rate of lower pelvic pain.

The current recommendation is that pregnant women with spina bifida be encouraged to deliver vaginally as women who have vaginal deliveries have fewer complications, faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays.

Women delivered by caesarean section have a higher rate of complications, and surgery is often complicated if there has been past urological surgery for spina bifida. The presence of pelvic scarring often makes identification of ureters and other structures difficult

whether there is an increased risk of birth defects is unknown. another words from what i understand of that comment, it has not be proven in any birth defects of babies with mothers of spina bifida  (+ info)

what is the life expectancy for someone with Spina Bifida?

I am a thirty year old female with Spina Bifida. I want to know what the life expectancy is for someone who has Spina Bifida.
----------

76% of people born with Spina Bifida after 1975 are still alive today. medical advancements continue to improve the lives and health of these individuals. It is projected that some individuals could live well into their late 50s and 60s and perhaps beyond. The greatest cause of death with someone having spina bifida is a side complication that interferes with their general health such as pneumonia, or other illnesses.  (+ info)
