Hi i understand how you are feeling. I am 29 and was also born with SBO. I am also a part time wheelchair user. I am also on means tested benefits in the uk and also want to work. The best advice i can give is keep knocking on doors (job centres) Keep ringing people up (local voluntary organisations, local government about work placements) but most importantly dont give up. YOU WILL find work and you will come out of the system everntually even though it will not happen overnight. Take care and i wish you and your son well  (+ info)

spina bifida occulta and cheerleading?

Could cheerleading cause injury and back pain in a teenager with spina bifida occulta?
I am asking because my daughter has recently been complaining about back pain & can not stand in one spot for long without bending over to stretch her back. Right now she is crying & experiencing her first pinched nerve in her neck. She can only turn her head to one side. She is a flyer, the one they throw in the air that does flips and twists, but she has been off all summer (except for rehearsals with her ballet company). She has been a ballet dancer since she was 4yrs old. And for the record, she does not have a predominant "hairy patch", or at least not noticable cuz she is blonde. She does have significant dimples in her lower back. She was also born with club feet and has had urinary problems her whole life. We do not live in an area with thorough doctors, as they barely remember you from one visit to the other. We were not even aware of the SBO until a CT scan after a scooter accident. No follow up was ever done, as they were concentrating on her fainting spells.

Yes... Spina Bifida Occulta is a very mild case of Spina Bifida. There are 3 types (Occulta, Meningocele, Myelomeningocele) You should be careful. There are some exercises to help strengthen muscles around your spine to help support and maintain mobility.
My daughter was born with Spina Bifida - Myelomeningocele.  (+ info)

please help!!!! spina bifida occulta s1?

i recently had an xray done for my back as i have back pain....on my findings sheet from the diagnosis it says all is normal but below that it says that spina bifida occulta s1 is noted...............does this mean i have spina bifida as my doctor wouldnt tell me anything......please help!
----------

No you do not have Spina Bifida!
Occulta is Latin for "hidden." This is one of the mildest forms of spina bifida although the degree of disability can vary depending upon the location of the lesion. In occulta there is no opening of the back, but the outer part of some of the vertebrae are not completely closed. The split in the vertebrae is so small that the spinal cord does not protrude. The skin at the site of the lesion may be normal, or it may have some hair growing from it; there may be a dimple in the skin, a lipoma, a dermal sinus or a birthmark. Many people with the mildest form of this type of spina bifida do not even know they have it. This was picked up on a x-ray, but if you had Spina Bifida you would have known since birth. Spina Bifida Occulta S1 Help Needed?

Hi, I have Spina Bifida Occulta S1, and it is really bothering. I have a 2 year old baby and another one coming in December, and I can't enjoy playing with her much because of the back pain. There are certain movements that hurt me a lot, and to carry her a little longer causes more pain. If I sit on a chair it hurts, driving it hurts.. gee this really is a horrible thing to have... I am tired of injecting my ass, and I hear there are some special exercises that help you deal with Spina Bifida Occulta. Can someone tell me where to find more info about these exercises?
Thanks!

You need to be seeing your neurologist or neurosurgeon. You need to have an MRI done to make sure you don't have tether cord.  (+ info)

Spina bifida Occulta and Hydrocephalus?

I was diagnosed with Spina Bifida Occulta along with Hydrocephalus when I was a baby, I am now 27 and suffering regularly with severe back pain and shooting pains in my head when i turn my head certain ways.

I have already had ICP monitoring done on my shunt back in December which revealed nothing unusual. It is only since this that things have seemed to get worse. Has anyone else had this problem? also, Can SB(O) get worse with age?
PROPER ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE!!!

have they done a complete spine MRI to check for arnold chiari or tether cord? Those both can cause problems.  (+ info)

spina bifida occulta effects after accident?

I was in a car accident and have been having back trouble since. I went today to have and epidural to hopefully relieve some of the pain I am having. I do have spinal stenosis since the accident and we were trying for our second time to get the epi to work. While looking on the screen today to insert the needle my Dr asked if I knew I had spina bifida occulta... I had no idea. I have been looking online and trying to see if this could be part of what my pain is being caused from. I just don't know about it enough to have any idea. I go back to see the dr in about 2 weeks and I will talk to him too... just wondered if anyone had any input. Thanks Much!!!

If nothing is herniating through the cleft in your spine, there is no reason to believe it is related to the pain you're having. I would ask if any other spinal deformity was noted, and if further investigation with a neurologist on the spina bifida occulta is advisable.  (+ info)

Hemivertebrae, fused vertebrae & spina bifida occulta?

During a chest x-ray for asthma, it was discovered my 12 yr old son has hemivertebrae, fused vertebrae, & spina bifida occulta. We are waiting to see the orthopedic surgeon. I have many questions. Will he need surgery? How will this effect my son as he grows? Why does he have this? Does it mean his siblings may also have it? Will he be able to play sports? My son since kindergarten has needed occupational therapy for fine motor skills. His doctors never looked into the causes of the delay in his fine motor skills, except saying it was neurological. They never sent him to any specialists. Could these spinal issues cause the fine motor skill trouble that my son has??
----------

I can't answer your questions in order, and this is an issue for your son's own doctors and specialists, surprised to see you here, but this is a major life event, and an issue for you and your son, going on 7 - 12 years. You deserve some consideration.

Yes, this is the reason for the neurological deficit and is combined with the motor skills delay or problems. He might need surgery, which is not risky, but all surgery is to be taken seriously. It would help him grow, to have the surgery, presumably. Surgery may be more than once and done in stages. He can play sports but never at full potential. He has it through genes or pure random fetal development. Siblings are very unlikely to have it, as it is rare, and and as I said, possibly random, very random. Thus siblings will be unremarkable, meaning normal, not to be offensive, rather to explain.

Usually, spina bifida is far more serious, detected at birth, and results in an open back, not closed spinal column, and/or immediate mortality. Your sons relative normalcy is why is was not detected.  (+ info)

Help!Does anyone know about spina bifida occulta in a 10 month old baby?

My 10 month old son can not sit up so our Dr. sent us for blood testing.Everything came back fine. Then today, she sent us to see a pediatric neurology Dr.. She tryed to sit him up but he could not do it without support. The Dr. said that it seems like his muscles are not strong enough in his belly.
My son can roll onto his belly, but he can not crawl. For the last 3 days he has been trying so hard to pick himself up to crawl and he can do it, but only for a few seconds.
The Dr. checked his legs , feet, and upper chest and everything is fine. She said that he is very strong in his upper chest. Then she flipped him over on to his belly and pulled down his diaper. He has a tiny bit of hair on the top of his bottom. Maybe 7 hairs and just a bit dark. She said she thinks he might have spina bifida and acted like it was no big deal. She sent us to do an ultra sound at the hospital but that didn't work. She couldn't see a thing and said the Dr. should have done an mri. The Dr. wants to see him back in Dec. and if nothing has changed, then she will do a mri. Should I call her and demand a mir now?
I came home and told my husband everything and that the Dr. acted like this was no big deal. I cooked, and tucked all the kids in bed. Then I looked up spina bifida occulta on the net. My heart is very heavy right now and I'm scared. Does anyone have a 10 month old that can't sit up and crawl?

I posted an answer on one of your other questions, but wanted to respond to what Emelu said. Spina bifida occulta IS A HUGE DEAL! It can and usually does cause bowel and bladder problems. It also causes muscle weakness and pain. A person with spina bifida occulta can also have tether cord and arnold chiari which are even bigger issues.  (+ info)

ATTENTION: Surgeons/Doctors/Nurses! Spina Bifida Occulta - help?

Completely clueless as to what "corrective surgery" involves. I have been recently diagnosed with Spina Bifida Occulta in L1, and am seeing a specialist surgeon in just over a week to discuss potential surgery. I'm 16.

Symptoms include: constant back pain (upper and lower), tension & pain in neck, severe hip and knee dislocation. Limited movement in all of the above.

Q1. What could I be in for if we go through with the surgery? How exactly does it work? What does the procedure involve?

Q2. Professional opinions please! This has been suggested to me for my hip:

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thankyou in advance.

Spina Bifida Occulta itself doesn't involve having surgery. Now if you have a tether cord, then you would have a surgery to release the spinal cord. You will need to have an MRI if you haven't already of your entire spine to make sure tether cord or arnold chiari isn't involved. If it is then surgery maybe required, but not always.  (+ info)
