I found out today that I have spina bifida occulta.... My problem is that I have had severe chronic back pain?

since the age of 15. I am now 27. The pain gets so bad that sometimes I can not stand up and I have to crawl even to go to the bathroom. The Dr said they found in accidentally while looking for another lower back problem on my x-ray. So she said that there is nothing they can do and prescribed me muscle relaxers. Now am I going to be stuck taking pills the rest of my life? I read that if the Dr finds that on an x-ray they are suppose to send you for an MRI to see the extend of the spina bifida, however she has not done that. I am stuck as to where to go from here. My back pain is so bad that I can not sit for longer than 15 minutes or bend or pick up my son.

You need to be seeing a neurologist or neurosurgeon.  (+ info)

my 4 year old has Spina bifida occulta could this have been noticed before he started having problems?

My son is now almost 5 and since he was little he never moved his back much. He also never crawled like most babies do he would just go on his hands and feet like a little monkey. He also has had a very hard time with using the toilet. He has bowel and bladder problems that I have attempted to address with the doctor many times before now. I was put at a high risk level when I was pregnant and they did about 6-8 ultrasounds and they never said that there was anything wrong. Is it possible that this problem could have been undetected or is it something that they felt was not serious enough to address at that time? I was told that the bloodwork should have told them that there could be a problem and there were 2 times that they sent me into a specialist to have a more detailed ultrasound done. Is there anything that can be done now to help him so he does not have serious problems in the future. Or does he just continue to have more problems with his bowels and bladder?
----------

Spina Bifida occulta may only leave a small dimple in the lower back or even a patch of hair. A ultrasound would not be able to pick this up not like spina bidifa mylomengolcyle (the worst forms of spina bifida) But i'm pretty sure they should have picked it up with the afp test at 15 weeks or so, Thats how they picked up that my 6yr old has spina bifida mylomenigolcyle. If he has the occulta type he shouldn't have any back trouble to my knowledge, most people with the occulta never experiance any problems. I would definately take him to see a urologist and a gastointestional doctor they are a must have for spina bidifa children, my daughter pays them frequant visits once a month as she gets chronic constipation and utis. Good luck to ya..  (+ info)

Spina Bifida?/????????

I'm doing a school project for school and we have to take care of an egg and pretend it's our baby, and i drew a card saying my baby had spina bifida. Now I'm writing a log of the baby's daily activities and if a baby is born with spina bifida do you immediately know if it has the disorder? Or do you find out during the pregnancy? Or does it gradually make itself known over time?! Also, what are some tips on caring for a baby with spina bifida?
Also, are babies with spina bifida in a lot of pain?
----------

Pain no. A baby with sb usually undergoes a surgery within 24 hours to either close the skin on the back or to remove a fluid filled sac that contains the spinal cord and membranes. Another surgery if necessary is usually done within the first week if the child has hydrocephalus. A shunt is placed into the brain to drain the spinal fluid from the ventricles of the brain. After that, surgery depends on the child and lesion. Paralysis may or may not be involved. Depending on the lesion of the defect, bowel and bladder issues are more then likely going to happen. Some of us cath. Some of us have bowel regimens that we do. Some of us walk, while others like myself are in wheelchairs. I have the worst case and am paralyzed from the chest down. I have also had close to 50 surgeries in my 26 years of life.  (+ info)

Spina bifida?

I went to the doctors today to review x-rays of my hip and spine reviewed and I turns out that I have some sort of spina bifida or something. I can't remember exactly what she said it was but she said it wasn't serious. I just had deformed vertabrae in the lumbar region of the spine. But does anyone know what this is or how to deal with the pain?
----------

There are different degrees of this condition. From what you state it appears that you have the mildest which is deformed vertebrae. The back of the vertebrae may not be closed completely or just deformed. There is no statement as to what symptoms are found. Ask the orthopedist for a referral to a physical therapist. The therapist will work on reducing the pain and increasing mobility and strength. For pain control at this time use ice on the area for ten to fifteen minutes.  (+ info)

when an xray findings report says......spina bifida occulta of s1 NOTED....what does that mean.???...?

This means that the disease Spina Bifida Occulta has been found in a specific area of the spine.

"Occulta is Latin for "hidden." This is one of the mildest forms of spina bifida although the degree of disability can vary depending upon the location of the lesion.[5]

In occulta there is no opening of the back, but the outer part of some of the vertebrae are not completely closed.[4] The split in the vertebrae is so small that the spinal cord does not protrude. The skin at the site of the lesion may be normal, or it may have some hair growing from it; there may be a dimple in the skin, a lipoma, a dermal sinus or a birthmark.[6]

Many people with the mildest form of this type of spina bifida do not even know they have it, or symptoms do not appear until later in life.[6] People with spina bifida occulta may suffer from a tethered cord from diastematomyelia or the lipoma in lipomyelomeningocele, when the spinal cord gets trapped below the affected level of the growing spine. This may cause neurological problems of the legs and bladder.[6]

A systematic review of radiographic research studies found no relationship between spina bifida occulta and back pain.[7] More recent studies not included in the review support the negative findings.[8][9][10]

However, other studies suggest spina bifida occulta is not always harmless. One study found that among patients with back pain, severity is worse if spina bifida occulta is present.[11][12]"

spina a bifida occulta?? does any one have any advice?

i have this and as a child suffered urine infections and constipation then as i go older a bit of back ache, but since having my daughter it seems to have cleared my problems up! my daughter now 3 has severe constipation a few urine infections and is always complaining that her knees are hurting, i have been back and forth to the doctors and they fob me off with lactlose and tell me to keep pushing fruit and veg ect witch is very hard as she hates fruit and veg i am still trying tho! does anyone know anything about this and does anyone one else have the same i think she may have this too but am i just worrying over nothing?
----------

It does sound a bit like she may have a very mild form of Spina Bifida Occulta. Does she have a tuft of hair or a dimpled area at the base of her spine? If the answer is yes, then you should ask your doctor to refer her for tests. some of the symptoms of SBO are bowel and bladder problems and orthopaedic bone problems in the legs.  (+ info)
