Please don't listen to anything you read here if you are really in pain.. If you are really in pain the only one that can help you is a doctor. They don't hang out here much, except for the cyber-doc's.

Here is a link that can help you
http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/guide/pain-management-back-pain

this is good, free information from medical professionals.

Except for links I would ignore 99% of what you learn on Y/A

I hope you feel relief soon.  (+ info)

What kind of doctor treats ankylosing spondylitis?

You don't want or need to see an orthopedic surgeon/doctor for AS.

Specialized care should come from a rheumatologist and even then not all rheumatologists have the knowledge base.

Once the disease has stabilized, a well-qualified general internist can usually manage treatment.  (+ info)

Any suggestions for treating Ankylosing Spondylitis naturally?

I am a 31 year old female who has Ankylosing Spondylitis. I seem to be intolerant of NSAID's, as my digestive problems are exacerbated by them. My Rheumatologist doesn't want to try DMARD's yet because the disease is fairly mild and he thinks the risks outweigh the benefits at this time. Any suggestions?

this website claims diet'll do it... but i don't believe it. i am not, however, omniscient. i'd say, "it can't hurt", but it probably does.

What is typical treatment for Ankylosing Spondylitis for someone in mid to late 20s?

I'm looking for common paths of treatment for someone who has been diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis @ 27 years of age.
HLA B27 positive
Sed rate of 21

Pain started lower back, moved to hips, moved down legs and over the course of three years has spread to upper back. Some pain when breathing deeply.
----------

Hopefully you are being seen regularly by a rheumatologist, and hopefully that rheumatologist is one who is familiar with AS.

What you have is progressing, and that is not so good.

Note - the pain down your legs is actually referred pain from pressure on the sciatic nerve from the inflammation around your spine and sacroiliac joint.

I was diagnosed with AS nearly 15 years ago and have been symptomatic for more than 20 years. I am on a regime of indocin (high dose) and azulfidine (moderate) - not an uncommon combination.

Medication for AS

There are other treatments as well, but surgery is very rare.

Exercises to prevent spine curvature due to kyphosis or spondylitis?

Every member of my immediate family has noticeable neck spine curvature. (I am the youngest...they are middle aged and older.) One has been diagnosed with spondylitis.

I get bad neck pain and some jaw pain on most days of the week and believe that my neck and shoulders are starting to curve. It feels like the muscles on the back of my neck are "tight" and this makes it hard for me to keep my neck straight.

Are there exercises to protect the health of my spine and to maintain good posture? Can I stop the curvature process?

Also, with a family history of spondylitis, is it likely that I may have it? (I believe it's more common in men but I am a woman.) Thanks.
