Spondylolysis is a mechanical disorder of the back. Spondyl meaning spinal. It is a stress fracture of the spine. Here's a great and easy reading article about it:
http://www.clevelandclinic.org/health/health-info/docs/3900/3912.asp?index=10303&src=news&ref=3900/3912.asp?index=10303

Syncope is the official word for fainting and it's caused by insufficient blood reaching the brain. Presyncope is exactly what you've described, dizziness and lightheadedness. It's not a full out syncope episode because you haven't actually fainted.

Here's a list of 28 items that can cause presyncope:

However, in MOST cases, it's almost impossible to determine the cause. Glad you got over it!  (+ info)

Something natural that I can take for muscle pain and pain related to bones during pregnancy?

I have a lot of back pain and muscle pain do to bad scoliosis and spondylolysis (two of the bones in my back didn't grow together right), along with knee and shoulder pain from various dislocations, hyper mobility, and the curvature of my neck is faced in the wrong direction. I have a lot of pain daily and realize I won't be able to take pain meds while pregnant. What else could I take? I would prefer something natural and it has to be pregnancy safe.

My daughter broke her back when she was 16 and was in the Stoke Mandeville Hospital for spinal injuries for two years. Now she plays National League Wheelchair Basketball, cycles hundreds of miles on a handcycle because she can't use her legs, and goes cycle camping in the mountains. She makes beautiful toys and cushions of a highly profesional standard. She has a good degree and a well paid job in a high-tech industry....She does a lot more than most people who are able-bodied .....Good for her...she's a winner!......Life seems rough now,but when they get things sorted you'll be fitter than my daughter is,so it's not going to ruin you're life unless you let it. It's hard waiting, but it will build your mind and character, and you could still be an Olympic Champion if you wanted to go that far. You're right how you think...it needn't rule your life...You're a winner too! .I just saw your response to another Q...brilliant! Helping straight away...that's a sign of a real winner. .The pain relief has to be controlled by the doctors, but if it isn't working let them know. There's a limit to how much they can give you or the drugs will do more damage...it's difficult, but at least there is something to help people with, thanks to all the people who spent their working lives researching and testing new and better drugs. We owe them a lot. ....Have you got contact with other people with back injuries? There's loads of forums on the Web,and local groups. Try to contact them and you can share advice and tips..Here's a couple to start with, just search 'spondylosis forums' for more.....Best of Luck.... http://www.experienceproject.com/group_forum.php?g=99671 ... http://ehealthforum.com/health/spinal-spondylosis-t130283.html ... ..  (+ info)

Spondylolysis and Kickboxing?

15 years ago I was diagnosed with Spondylolysis. I deal with it and it doesn't rule my life. I have a good mattress and wear comfortable shoes, etc. I haven't had a major flare up in 9 years. I've been researching ways to beat the belly fat and cardio workouts keep coming up. A local karate school offers kickboxing classes for adults. Their claims include one woman going from a size 14 to a size 5. This seems like the best route for me and my "rolls" but I'm concerned that joining the class could cause my spondylolysis to flare up again. How do I beat the belly fat without killing my back? I went into the studio but all of the instructors were too busy to even speak to me let alone answer any questions and they don't seem to answer their phone.

Spondylolysis-How much longer?

I learned I had this injury May 31st, 2008 and am a college baseball player (P). I have struggled greatly over the past year with not only not being able to compete last season, but not being able to work-out, run, hike, or do many of the things I am passionate about. Forntunately I have tried to make the best of it by getting my grades where they need to be for med school and finding the time to coach a HS team this summer. I felt like everything was almost healed until I made my 2100 mile journey home from School to my home-town for the summer. I saw my doctor last week and after taking a set of X-rays and a bone scan I was notified earlier today that It has not healed at all. What do I do? I would love to play ball again; I am a competitor. However I would much rather just be able to go out and hit the links with my family or go on a nice long run. Anyone else ever have such a problem with Spondylolysis?
----------

No but I think you should listen to your doctors advice. It is terrible to be unable to do the things you love but it's better than never being able to do them again.  (+ info)

Spondylolysis/ Spondylolisthesis?

I have a vertebrae that protrudes farther than any of the others. There is swelling around this vertebra and I experience severe back pain and very tight hamstrings (although I've been told I'm hypermobile in all other parts of the body). I also have pain in my legs with the slightest bit of exertion.

A physical therapist said I might have spondylolisthesis and I've been reading a lot about it and noticed my symptoms fit.

I've had X-Rays of my back within the past 5 years and all they said was that I had an extra lumbar vertebra. Could they have mistaken spondylolysis with an extra vertebra? Is it possible to miss this condition on X-rays? Should I request an MRI or ct-scan?

What type of doctor should I see for this problem? Any other info would be appreciated.

I also see a neurologist for other issues. Should I let her know about my concerns? Would a neurologist be helpful?
----------

A spondylolisthesis should be caught on x-ray. In fact, it would be easier to see on an x-ray than a CT scan because it's easier to observe the alignment.

However, the majority of spondylolisthesis are are benign, incidental findings that really have no correlation with pain. You really have to get to a grade III or IV spondy before symptoms can radiate down the leg. This would be blatantly obvious on an x-ray.

However, spondylolisthesis is also different than spondylolysis....the lysis is the fracture, the listhesis is when it slips forward. When they are fresh, a spondylolysis can cause persistent grumbling back pain, but should never really cause leg pain. However, if that were a concern, spondylolysis are often hard to pick up on an x-ray and CT or MRI is often needed to pick them up.

Regarding the L-6 vertebrae...again, this is thought to be an incidental finding and is usually not correlated with back pain.

If you are having back and leg symptoms, I do think further investigation is necessary. You did not mention if what you were doing in PT, but I would recommend that if your PT is not certified in mechanical diagnosis and therapy, an MDT evaluation can be very helpful in sorting through these things without costly imaging. If your problem is thought to be irreducible or is in need for further workup, that will become evident upon evaluation. You can find a PT who is certified in this by going to www.mckenziemdt.org

However, if you need to see a physician first because of your insurance or state laws, I would actually recommend a neurosurgeon (or even your PCP who might be willing to do some initial work up) as opposed to a neurologist. If it's a non surgical problem related to your medical condition, your neurologist can prescribe nerve medication, but that's about it.

...in your case, I'd be more concerned about spinal stenosis or disc related disorders.  (+ info)

Reoccurent Spondylolysis in my L5 vertebrae?

Hi my names kevin i'm 16 and i was diagnosed with spondylolysis last year and i was put in a back brace for 6 weeks. (was this enough time?) I had a good recovery and i was playing sports non competitively in the summer. then soccer came around and i got the pain again. My doc authorized an mri and the doc said that there was inflimation of the L5 vertebrae. Then my doc looked at the old mri that told me i was clear to play and he saw that there was actually inflimation of the bone in that mri. Did i leave the brace too early last time, or is this going to be a reoccuring thing? I need to get better basketball season's coming up and i'm sick of watching people play.
----------

If there is any inflammation, then the cause needs to be determined, and treated. It may be harmful to play sports with this problem. It could lead to more problems later down the road.
I am currently recovering from fusion, decompression, and laminecetomy surgery for spondylolistesis, L5/S1. If I took care of this sooner, I might have been able to avoid this whole situation!
If you followed your doctor's instructions and kept up with all appointments, physical therapy, if applicable, and follow up care, then you did nothing wrong. Back problems like this can be chronic, so there is a possibility that you may need further care, such as injections. Only a doctor can determine what you need, so if you are experiencing pain, it is time to head back to the doctor to see what needs to be done. Take care of it now, before your spondylolysis can get worse. This way, you are more likely to be able to compete in the sports that you enjoy.
Good luck!  (+ info)

Symptomatic Spondylolysis?

I went to the doctor last week thinking that I might have Compartment Syndrome because my shins fall asleep and then I don’t have any control over my feet. It also feels like the inside of my shins are literally on fire. It’s horrible! But then the 2nd doctor that I went to said that I have Symptomatic Spondylolysis. It wouldn’t be a problem except that any time I do any type of activity my shins burn and tingle and its at times, unbearable. Sometimes I won’t even be doing activity and will just be standing there and the symptoms will occur. Does anyone know how to fix this? How long is the recovery before I can run again with no pain? Etc. I am going to the doctor to get a professional opinion soon but I just want to be semi-prepared. Thanks so much!!!
And please, only answers that you at least kind of know what you’re talking about.
