Scoliosis and Spondylolysis??? ?

Hi everyone,

I just obtained my medical records from 10 years ago and am trying to make sense of the xray/bone scans, etc.

It says that I have a "bilateral L4 pars defect" and the diagnosis was spondylolysis. I also have, according to xray report, mild lumbar scoliosis (dextrothoracic curve of 10 degerss and levothoracolumbar curve of 12 degrees). Is the scoliosis significant? I wasn't really informed of this 10 years ago and am just seeing it in the report.

I was being worked up for back pain which I still have. I get bad pain when I stand on my feet in one place or if I wear high heels. I'm fine normally but really can't stand in the same place for even an hour straight. The doctor told me he doubt I would get better but gave me a brace. It didn't help.

Does anyone here have experience w either condition and have some personal advice about what to do? I know technically what each are as I have done some reading but want more personal advice about how bad this is, what if anything can be done and if the scoliosis alone could be a culprit in the pain?

Thanks!

I cannot make much since of you details, considering the fact that I am not a Doctor nor a Medical Professional. I highly suggest that you see a Spinal Specialist, who should be able to review your records and assist you.

As for Scoliosis, I highly doubt that you have a serious case at all considering the fact that a 10/12 degree curve is not serious. However, this could have progressed as you have gotten older.  (+ info)

help with spondylolysis (scotty dog fracture)?

so about 2 years ago my back started hurting and i went to the chiropracter...i started going regularly and after 2 or 3 months nothing got better...but worse. he told me to go get an xray.

the xray showed i had spondylolysis in my lower back. i got reffered to a physical therapist for treatment.

i went there for about 3 months and all semmed well. so for the last year or so its been fine...playing sports and all. about 2 months ago i got nailed by this guy playing hockey. my back starting hurting but i just said ive just been checked so hard no wonder it hurts. after a week i was fine.

a week ago i got hit really hard again and nowit hasnt hurt...i cant play and it hurts to just walk to the bathroom.

What should i do to try to get rid of this for good?

In spondylolysis, there is no slippage of the vertebrae...I would hope a chiropractor would know that!

I think you've recovered well and that anytime you get hit in the back, you may be experiencing soft tissue damage...just like anyone else might.

Do you know if your spondylolysis is on one side or both? If only on one side, there is almost no chance of forward slippage...if on both, you should follow up with a physician to make sure it has not progressed to a slippage (called a spondylolisthesis) which may or may not be relevant. If your spondylolysis is on both sides, you should discuss with an orthopedist if contact sports are in your best interest.

In summary, however, your description of your injuries is consistent with regular old soft tissue trauma...something to be expected by anyone. If it's not better in 1-2 weeks, follow up with a physician.   (+ info)

I have a Spondylolysis - will I be able to breakdance anymore?

I've had a Spondylolysis for the better part of 2 years. It ain't healin', I found out about it too late. My question is... If I strengthen my core muscles, will I be able to breakdance like I used to or am I out of physical activity like that permanently?

(Please be sure to tell me where your sources are from, or how you know this, thank you!!)
A spondylolysis is a stress fracture of the lower lumbar. I got it by falling on my ass when going off a jump, rollerblading... Most people get it from gymnastics and other sports.
I waited to long to get it diagnosed, so now it won't heal...

O.K., I've had some medical stuff but I'm not sure what Spondylolysis symptoms are. Could you drop me a short reply to them and I'll see if what I have can help you.  (+ info)

Spondlylolysis is a small fracture on part of the vertebrae...it's not serious, but it can be associated with pain. How does he know you were born with it? Had you had x-rays as a child? If not, there is no way of knowing whether this was a congenital defect, or if you aquired it sometime later. It common happens in female teenagers who are active in sports.

Physical therapy might be helpful, but in cases where the spondylolysis is acquired (ie, from activity), relative rest usually takes care of it...but it can take a full year of refraining from high impact sports.

The bump could be a bulging disc, which is really not that serious and might be an incidental finding.
It could also be a Schmorle's node which is a herniation of the disc into the vertebrae...it too, is nothing serious and is often not associated with pain.  (+ info)

Spondylolysis- a fracture..help?

Hi. I have Spondylolysis...a defect in the pars interarticularis of a vertebra. wish is basically a stress fracture in my L5 vertabrae. Its bilateral. so this caused mild spondylolysthesis(slippage of the vartabrae). The Dr told thre was nothing he could do..just do a fusion when the slippage got severe..or the pain was too much. The last time I saw him was in January.and the pain back then was horrible and every single day.. (I also experience radiating pain in both legs). So I asked him if he could order me a corset to deal with the pain..so I di get one and wore the the brace thingy for about a month or two. umm it did help with the pain but then the thing itself caused pain so I took it off and never put it on again. We were supposed to come back in February..but we never did. How soon should my mom make the appt.? she doesnt even want to take x-rays of it. she wants to take x-rays of my mild scoliosis, which is not necessary cus the dr. said it wasnt going to progress. But shes not convinced. And my second question is..was it a bad decision taking off the corset?

BTW Im 14.

I broke my L2 in a car accident in May and had/have a slipped L5. It was very painful, every day of my life I was screaming in pain and on a pill form of morphine. I was in a hard plastic padded brace that went from my arm pits to my hips all the way around my stomach and back. For 2 months I had to wear it no matter what I did. To shower, to sleep, to sit, to stand, to walk, no matter what. I hated going out in it.

If you were told that the brace could help the healing process then by all means put it back on as the pain of the brace is better than dealing with the life long pain of a break. If he was told that you didn't have to have the brace and that it was for sole comfort reasons then you shouldn't worry about putting the brace back on. Go back to the doctor for x-rays on your back to see how it is healing and see what should be done. You don't want to mess with a spinal injury because if they get severe you will need major surgery and you really don't want a fusion at your young age.

I am actually seeing a chiropractor now that my L2 is healed enough that it can be adjusted and the chiropractor adjusts my L5 putting it more into alignment.

Good luck!

Btw I'm 19.  (+ info)

Chronic Spondylolysis?

Went to family Dr. Friday for low back pain, had an x ray done. Dr. Called me the following Monday and said I have mild Arthritis in my back,I'm only 32. I have an apponitment with an Orthopedic for a second opinion. I picked up my x rays and the results were in the envelope. The results read:

Chronic spondylolysis at L5 is demonstrated. This is best seen in the sagittal plane and not well profiled on the oblique views. If relevant,CT could better evaluate this level. This is probably bilateral. No significant subluxation of L5 on S1 is seen. There is slight narrowing of the L5-S1 disk. Partial fusion of the prosterior elements of S1 is incidentally seen.

What does this mean to someone who is not a Dr? Why would my family Dr. not mention the rest of the results to me. She said that I need physical therapy. I have searched online as much as I could and only to find out that this is a disease and I could possibly be layed out in a few years. I sit all day at work and it is really effecting me. Could someone please let me know what this means????
----------

Yeah. I have spondylolysis which turned into spondylolithesis (L5 on S1). I recommend getting a CT scan of your lumbar spine if it is suggested. It is a better view and can tell you how bad yours is. Basically part of your L5 broke, and if it is bilateral, then there is a chance that the front part of your L5 will slip forward (spondylolothesis).

The chance of you having to be on bed rest is minimal. Based on the severity of mine, my doctor told me not to lift anything over 20 lbs off of the floor. But, I have moved three times since then so I did end up lifting stuff and I am still fine. It just increases the risk of a slipped disk, which could paralyze you.

When my spondylolysis turned into spondylolithesis it did hurt a lot and I spent about a month laying in bed whenever I got a chance. I still went to work and school and all, but laying in bed was the only way to reduce the pain.

I recommend getting a pair of good shoes to help with walking around. I bought Earth shoes and they definitely have helped my back pain. There isn't a whole lot I have found that works to reduce pain while driving, but try to not sit in the same position the whole time; move your hips or something.

This condition isn't the end of the world and there are things that can be done about it. Making sure your ab muscles are well toned helps too. And work on your posture, that will also ease the pain.

I'm going to a chiropractor once a week and she does wonders for my pain too. She is able to do things that will help get my L5/S1 slip back into place and I have noticed significant improvement.

Hope this helps.  (+ info)

Iam a college athlete and have a fracture in my L4 (Spondylolysis)?

I received x-rays in 2006 and discovered that I had Spondylolysis, I got trigger point for a couple months and it helped. My back did not realy hurt durnig high school it was just sore. Now iam a sophtmore in college and the last two weeks of my basketball season my back was having spasims and little movements such as brushing my teeth are difficult. Iam taking motrem and soma(pain killer) to help me get through but it still been difficult my doctor told me to take 10 days off and I did today was the first day back to a workout and my back is in pain like before the 10days. During this time I have been working on my core because i was told it would help me, and during the 10 days that I had off my back felt good and I thought I would be ready. I just want some advise that could help get better and continue playing at a level that I was before. if somone could get back to me with some medical advise I would really appriciate it. Thank you

You have a Par defect, probably caused by a fracture. We are now in 2008 so you need to get a UPDATE! You do not know if the fracture has healed, if the par defect has impinged on a nerve? Therefore you need to return to a Doctor and get the situation sorted, otherwise you will end up with Osteoarthritis at a young age and I promise you that is no fun! Best of Luck  (+ info)

Is anyone out there in pain?? I`ve tried everything but sometimes nothing helps! I`ve got spondylolysis..?

Do you have any options? A brace? Surgery? If you haven't found out a real answer, don't give up! There's no reason for anyone to have to live in pain today.
I have optical nerve pain, and after seeing every kind of doctor imaginable, all agreed that drug therapy is the only way to go. So I've been on Morphene and Codeine for 9 years, and wouldn't have it any other way.
If you're living with 10 pain, and can't be helped, find a pain doctor who's not afraid to give you the meds you need.
I wish you the best of luck. :)  (+ info)
