Why I have been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

I had a few violent relationships from age 20- 23 and find it hard to trust people so I keep people at a distance.
But I have had panic attacks and agoraphobia since the age of 9.
Post-Traumatic stress Disorder or something else ?
Also I have always had a hard time expressing myself in person to people I don't know well.

Do events you see that relate to it even if you see it through media sources, tv that will trigger problems and cause you now very hard times to view things that are close to what you suffered.

I ask this cause myself, I was in a severe accident, could have easily died, really could have with a C-1 fracture (broken neck) on cervical 1 with other issues that I don't even want to talk about witch is not like me, but points to PTSD and whenever I see on tv that resembles a accident, a bad accident with blood all over the victims of the accident. I just can't watch it, or have great trouble and triggers a lot of issues. Dreams use to come and really bother me,

I handle these issues the wrong way using diazepam too flood myself of all these triggers/thoughts and never experienced anything like this before.

Even though I will heal from all the injuries, I was lucky and could have even had temporarily or full paralysis so even though I feel lucky, I still get these attacks. what I am saying is if you don't think you have it, ask yourself if you experience any of the symptoms of it and really, experiences myself, something that you never really experienced before.  (+ info)

Can post traumatic stress disorder cause physical paralysis?

I thought I read somewhere that ptsd can cause physical paralysis due to the stress and such, but now I can't remember exactly where I found that information. I'm writing something where I was going to have a soldier lose feeling in his legs while suffering from ptsd, but I don't want to include it if it's not possible. Thanks!

Remember the brain is very powerful and we haven't even touched on what the possibilities are. In the same note physical handicaps are very different from mental handicaps. On the news lately there was a young girl that sneezes once every 5 seconds or something, while some think it's a "rare" disease, others think it's a tick. Physical properties in a disorder can fixed though physical cures but mental disorders are only fixable by verbal therapy. Sounds to me like a "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" when he thought he couldn't drive anymore hahaha.  (+ info)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder....what is it? What are the symptoms of it?

What are the symptoms of it? I know you have to go through something traumatic in your life to experience it, obviously, but I was just curious as to what sort of signs to look for in trying to diagnose yourself? How long does the stress disorder normally last for? Thanks
----------

Many people who are involved in traumatic events or witness them have a brief period of difficulty adjusting and coping. But with time and some healthy coping methods, such traumatic reactions usually get better on their own. In some cases, though, the symptoms can get worse or last for months or even years. Sometimes, they may even completely disrupt your life. In these cases, you may have post-traumatic stress disorder -In general, post-traumatic stress disorder can be seen as an overwhelming of the body's normal psychological defenses against stress. Thus, after the trauma, there is abnormal function (dysfunction) of the normal defense systems, which results in certain symptoms. The symptoms are produced in three different ways:

Re-experiencing the trauma
Persistent avoidance
Increased arousal
First, symptoms can be produced by re-experiencing the trauma, whereby the individual can have distressing recollections of the trauma. For example, the person may relive the experience as terrible dreams or nightmares or as daytime flashbacks of the event. Furthermore, external cues in the environment may remind the patient of the event. As a result, the psychological distress of the exposure to trauma is reactivated (brought back) by internal thoughts, memories, and even fantasies. Persons also can experience physical reactions to stress, such as sweating and rapid heart rate. (These reactions are similar to the "fight or flight" responses to emergencies described by Dr. Walter Cannon.) The patient's posttraumatic symptoms can be identical to those symptoms experienced when the actual trauma was occurring.

The second way that symptoms are produced is by persistent avoid  (+ info)

Do you think the death of a parent at a young age could cause traumatic stress disorder?

My mom died when I was 20. She was sick with cancer since I was 14. During that time, I wasn't aware of the seriousness of cancer, I was a kid. Now that I'm alot older, I wish I could go back, but of course I can't. However, I feel I have "issues" because of this. Do you (any professionals please answer, thank you) think that I could have traumatic stress disorder from something like this? I have serious trust issues as well as some other problems (depression, etc) Thanks in advance.
----------

PTSD-ummm nope. You don't seem to write about exhibiting any major symptoms and the time difference is pretty long. You maybe finally ready to deal with the pain as a result of her death that you supressed at your young age. Regardless i think you should talk with a professional. Losing someone at a young age and someone of such value will have severe affects on your psyche.  (+ info)

I have Nightmares and I also have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

I have Nightmares and I also have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and I have insomnia your thoughts any suggestions or ideas?
----------

Nightmares are a huge part of PTSD and not wanting to go to sleep because of these can cause insomnia. It's a cycle and therapy is needed to recover from it. Sometimes medication is given as well, but talking about the issue (with a professional) that caused the PTSD is the best way through this.  (+ info)

Is Post Traumatic stress disorder in anyway related to Phobias?

writing a paper for my psyc 100 class on phobias and came across PTSD and kinda would like to see how the two are related. Are they similar? Have kind of found that Phobias can be caused by traumatic events and obviously PTSD is too.
----------

both are anxiety disorders. There is also a pretty high co-morbidity between the two, meaning, basically, that many people have both phobias and PTSD.

It has been proposed (and supported empirically) that there is a trait underlying anxiety or that reflects a vulnerability to anxiety disorders--this is called anxiety sensitivity. Arguably, it could reflect vulnerability to any anxiety disorder.

You should be able to search for these terms and get a good bit of information.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms of 'post-traumatic stress disorder'?

Can depression, agoraphobia, and social anciety be symptoms of 'post-traumatic stress'?
----------

Yes those can be symptoms of PTSD. But, how does one know if they have the depression, agoraphobia, and social anxiety you mention?

A person who suspects the emtional problems listed should get counseling from a reputable pyschologist. One who has been recommended by others who have been helped. If a person can't afford counseling, they should invest in a good book on those ailments and try to work through it that way.

If the depression, agoraphobia, and social anxiety have already been diagnosed by any means, than yes they can be symptoms of PTSD. Be advised PTSD is caused by a traumatic event. It could be either abuse, a violent attack, a terrible car accident or fall or even witnessing a terrible event. I fear many of the people who survived the attack on the twin towers will one day experience PTSD, as will some of the searchers and rescuers.

With PTSD a person may or may not have nightmares about the actual event because the subconscious may be blocking it out. Other odd dreams can occur and sometimes no dreams. A person may find their daytime thoughts wandering and wonder why they can' t stay focused. They move things and can't remember where they put them.

PTSD can be emotionally disturbing and downright frustrating because the victim may not always know what is wrong.

Hope that helps..................  (+ info)

How does post-traumatic stress disorder in Vietnam War differ from war in Iraq or the two World Wars?

What effects of these wars are left behind on the soldiers in United States and how are they different from those from other wars? Why?
----------

PTSD is the same irregardless of the war or where it is held.

Each person has suffered a trauma that is specific to/for them.

'Nam was a war where we had no business sending the young to fight and it was in a country where the surroundings were totally different than most people sent there were used to and I believe it was more a wholesale killing spree than a controlled fighting issue.

Put anyone in another country or a totally different situation and have them kill and see horrors most people can't even begin to imagine and for some suffer physical injuries that they will never overcome and PTSD is a given. The Psyche is traumatized, usually for life.  (+ info)
