Is it possible to suffer a traumatic event and not even remember that you even experienced a traumatic event?

My friend's therapist thinks she suffered something traumatic as a child, possibly involving her father (whom she has 'hated' since her parents divorce).

She honestly doesn't remember anything traumatic at all of any type. Is it still possible that something happened? If so, how can she make herself remember?
What if she wants to remember, but doesn't know how--especially if she doesn't know what to look for?
----------

Yes, but the therapist shouldn't try to recall said possible event because it's highly likely he or she will create a "false memory," you should research that phenomenon.  (+ info)

How can I force myself to remember a traumatic experience?

14 years ago I suffered a traumatic event, but currently I have no memory of what happened. The weird thing is that I know what happened, and I have been able to make connections between current behaviors and problems to that particular event, but I can't specifically remember the event itself. Is there anyway to force myself to remember it?
I'm hoping to avoid the hypnosis route. Are there any other ways?
----------

No there is no way to force yourself to remember a traumatic event. Your mind is similiar to a camera. It has recorded what happened, but it is only going to release those events as your mind and your self can deal with what happened. So what I am saying is that it comes out in bits and pieces over time. Also, you might want to talk to a therapist about MPD or Dissociative amnesia, Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Even if you did do hypnosis there is no guarantee that you would remember then either.  (+ info)

What's the difference between bipolar and post traumatic stress disorder?

If you read my questions I post, you can tell that it's post traumatic stress disorder. Don't tell me you diagosis, but what the difference is, please.
I go through mad abuse.
----------

Bipolar disorder is a bio-chemically caused mental disorder that often results in episodes of mania and dpression in varied degrees of length and intensity...altho it hasn't been proven it tends to run in families therefore there may be a genetic connection...

Post-traumatic stress disorder is the result of an event or situation that the sufferer has experienced, lived thru...etc.
It is not genetic in nature....it is in response to an emotionally traumatic experience.....

racing thoughts.....insomnia....reduced inhibitions....rapid speech...thoughts that everthing is interconnected such as seeing obscure 'patterns' when patterns to things and situations are not there...promiscuity.....outrageous spending sprees.....these are some of the symptoms of mania....it can progress into halucinations and paranoia if not treated......  (+ info)

How does post traumatic stress disorder effect war veterans?

i have to write a paper on post traumatic stress disorder, and how it impacts iraq and vietnam veterans. so i really nee some help looking for articles, and some ideas, okay so please help me out guys
----------

well first off, everyone can get post traumatic stress from anything, its all mental, and i have it to be honest. Its not something you can control and its not something that is left unnoticed. You often catch yourself going through random flashbacks of a stressful situation. like I've noticed that when Im playing a video game, doesnt matter which game, but i was playing it and all of a sudden i was thinking about the stressful time that caused the post traumatic stress. and its like you re-live it temporarily, but some time had gone by because i had died on my game and my little sister had come in and asked me what i was doing. it causes bad dreams and makes you want to not sleep. depending on how bad it is. it just overall isnt something that is tolerable for very long  (+ info)

Subconjunctival hemorrhage - How fast should your eye get red?

Three days ago I woke up with a small portion of the white of my eye bloodshot. I assume this is Subconjunctival hemorrhage, but I have never had it before this incident. My question is, how fast does your eye get red? Should it happen immediately? My redness has stayed the same during the day, but each day since when I wake up there is more of it, so it appears to be happening overnight (three days running now).
----------

Is it bloodshot, meaning lots of big looking red vessels, or is there a patch of red, like a pool of blood? If it's a patch, it's a subconjunctival hemorrhage and it can spread over the eye and then eventually thin out and reabsorb. Generally it will run it's course within 7 to 10 days. If it's just bloodshot, it's something different. In either case, you should probably see your doctor for clarification and any necessary treatment.  (+ info)

What is it called when a streak of hair turns white after a traumatic event?

After an extremely traumatic event some people may have a white streak in their hair as they have loss the ability to hold the pigment. You can see it in the little boy in Sixth Sense for example. But what is that called when it happens?
----------

As with most medical myths, there is an element of truth to the notion that stress can lead to graying hair. For the most part, however, it is untrue. Because a hair shaft cannot change color once it has grown in (unless exposed to chemicals that change its color, a regular event at hair salons), hair cannot suddenly turn gray with or without stress.

However, alopecia areata and telogen effluvium can lead to pigmented hair loss, and stress has long been considered a trigger of these conditions (though not confirmed by recent research). As a result, an emotionally stressful event rarely can trigger loss of darker hair, leaving behind gray and white hair that is suddenly more noticeable. However, this is the exception, not the rule, and even this does not happen literally overnight. Much more often, stress (or lack of stress) has little known effect on one's hair — unless, of course, you're so on edge you pull it out.  (+ info)

What are some good things to do before going to sleep after a traumatic event?

This may sound like a question for almost general sleeping tips...

If someone wakes up every few hours being unable to sleep after a traumatic event what are some good things to do to calm down before bed? Anything particular they should eat, or drink? Would having someone they trust in the room while or until they sleep be helpful? Are there some positions more comfortable than others?
----------

It's all about what the person who has had the traumatic event prefers.
Personally I'd advise sitting with them, making where they're sleeping really comfortable and nicely lit, dimly lit and such, make them a nice hot mug of whatever they like (I personally like hot chocolate!) then read to them any book they choose. Even when they're asleep carry on reading just for 10 minutes or so after, just so while they're lucid dreaming they can hear your voice and it sooths them into a deeper sleep quicker.
I'd advise routines, not strict routines but nice routines that make the person happy, so they can concentrate on the present.
Maybe watch a film with them before they sleep also?  (+ info)

Lauren:
don't let these people bother you by calling you names. they do not know your situation and they have not walked in your shoes. they show their ignorance by the things that they say. you do not owe ANYONE an explanation and certainly no anonymous coward on the internet. I can promise you that each of them have skeletons in their own closets that others would gladly crucify them for. U don't need to worry about safety. It is completely safe-safer than childbirth. they DO NOT suck the fetus out in pieces either-not at that early stage. I guess ignorance is bliss for some of these people. At the stage you are in it is just like having a heavy period. That is all. Talk to your DOCTOR if you are concerned. DO NOT rely on scare tactics from people who have no information to start with.  (+ info)
