I think my daughter has a swayback?

My daughter is 9 going on 10 and she seems to have an unusual inward curve in her lower back. It makes her belly stick out farther than normal. Her lower back always looks like a "C" as if she were arching it.

I know little kids usually have that curve until they get older, but it is usually gone well before age 9! Anyone have any info on this? Should I make a special appt with her doctor or wait until her next physical?

It doesn't seem to bother her but if it's something that needs to be corrected, I don't want to wait too long. Thanks!
Thanks! I have a call in to my pediatrician. Waiting for her call bvack. : )

My sister had this...doctors said she'd likely have to have surgery...so my parents went to a chiropractor first, before exploring surgical options...it worked like a charm, she's got a perfect posture...doctors were very pleased with the result.  (+ info)

Any stretches to relieve back pain, possibly due to a swayback?

Middle to lower back pain after standing or sitting for prolonged amounts of time.

My stomach and back seem to bulge outwards.

When I lay flat on the ground, i can fit my arms on top of each other it the space between my back and the ground.

I have been laying flat of my back and hugging my knees then lowering my legs keeping my back in place. As I lower my legs back to the ground, I feel/hear 2-3 large 'pops', then my back seems flatter.
I said stomach and back, but meant stomach and behind seem to bulge.
I've done pilates before and I have a relatively strong core, I am a varsity cheerleader and only about 90 lbs. Does it need to be stronger?
----------

You need to learn Pilate's. The reason why your back is popping because your core strength, needs to be worked on. Pilate's teaches you to isolate the muscle groups first, you learn that and in tightening them and releasing them, you start to work the girdle. Only then are you allowed to try and lift a bent knee one inch off the floor. If you do this and your hips move, you go back to core strength. More people damage their own back trying to exercise without the correct muscle being 'engaged' than anything else. Good Luck  (+ info)

Any useful devices to improve posture?

I have horrible posture. Lots of back problems in my family. My sister has scoliosis, and I have what is called a "swayback" which means the curvature of my spine is more pronounced at my lower back. Because of this, my posture is horrible. I always have upper back pain in my muscles because slouching is much more comfortable with the curve in my lower back.

My question is this: I am in my mid-30's and now my upper back is starting to hunch over. I have tried yoga, excercises, and being mindful of my posture, but nothing is working. I need maybe some type of back brace, harness, or device to re-train my body back into good posture.

Anyone have any experience or suggestions? Thanks so much!

my yoga instructor said to tuck our tailbones under us, is that what you are supposed to do all the time?

it feels more comfortable to stick my butt and stomach out a little when i sit and stand, slightly swayback. but is it healthier to tuck my tailbone under me like they say to do in yoga?
----------

It really depends on your posture. In yoga in some poses we tuck the tailbone. In many poses we elongate the spine with abdominal support, to get our pelvis in a neutral position, not tucked. If you have lordosis or swayback, tucking the tailbone slightly at all times is helpful. If you don't, it's not, it may give you the opposite, where you have too little curve in the lower back. There are many back care books out there (Back Care Basics comes to mind) that will help you self diagnose the curve in your back, or talk to your doctor or chiropractor.

P.S. Many yoga instructors have had a career in dance where there is much more emphasis on the tucked tailbone. They tend to translate that into yoga, which is more pelvis neutral generally.  (+ info)

Can i fix my lordosis?

i have been looking all over the internet and i can never find a straight answer saying, YES!!! they all talk about how it is gonna be with you for ever and how you can treat it, but what does the treatment means? am i going to have a normal human posture if i fix it? if i cant fix it, then its a shame honestly ;( cuz im only 19 and i look like i have a monkey butt and im pregnant which is not funny :( my lower back hurts alot too. so all i am asking for is....... can lordosis (swayback) be fixed with exercises they recommend on the websites and get my normal posture back with no monkey butt?
----------

Lordosis in the normal inward curve in your spine. There is no reason to "treat" it and excessive lordosis is not linked to increased risk of low back pain. ...certainly, persons with very low muscle tone will tend to have excessive lordosis due to the inability of the abdominals to stabilize the pelvis and may be at an increased risk for low back pain. For these persons, yes...a series of abdominal strengthening exercises can help them increase their tone (but may not necessarily change their lordosis). But the mere presense of lordosis is not a cause for concern...there is a very wide variation in what is considered "normal."

However, in the end, posture is a habit. Even if you developed good abdominal strength, if you don't change the habit or standing with excessive lordosis, it will still remain...no matter how strong you are.

The notion that lordosis is a risk of low back pain and that it needs to be treated is based purely on theory...a pretty bad one at that...  (+ info)

how to strengthen lower abs?

whenever i do crunches, i only feel it in my upper stomach right under my chest, never in the middle or my lower abs. i went to a physical therapist for back problems and he said i had 'swayback' or something and it made my lower stomach muscles really really weak. well, he said to do crunches with my hips up, but that isnt working either? and i tried laying down and lifting my legs 45 degrees but i still only felt it in my upper abs. anything else i could do? or are they just so weak that i cant feel it working? =[

I got this answer from someone who asked the same question....The links below are great and show you a picture on how to do it.
There are two ways to do this
1. Off a bench or sturdy chair - sit at the edge - you will have to experiment to find the most comfortable position which still gives you a good range of motion. Keep your upper body at a 45 degree angle...support yourself with your hands at the edge of the chair or bench. Lower your legs, with your knees bent, as far down as they will go. Then bring them up slowly towards your upper body without swinging or jerking. Once you can do 12 strict reps - try and keep your legs straight while raising and lowering them.

2. Off the floor. This is less effective - lie on the floor, palms down, then raise your legs up , keep your hips down and legs comfortably bent until you build up some flexibility and lower ab strength.

Do these exercises as often as you can without tiring yourself. They only take a few seconds, try and shoot for 2 - 3 times a day.

Do I have this medical condition?

I have noticed for a real long time that my back is not 100 percent normal. My shoulder blades stick out farther than they should and myback seems to curve almost like a baackwards c (but not quite that extreme) towards the bottem. I think I may have sway back (a type of scoliosis)

When I try standing up totally straight my back looks awkward and my stomach sticks out farther than it should making me look big in the stomach even though I am very skinny (I weigh 70 pounds).

I have talked to my parents about my worries and they dont want me talking about it anymore because I have a past of being apperance "obsessed"

Anyone who can offer assistance telling me symtoms of swayback, treatment, if I have it, ect. would be mucho appreciated!

Thanks!
Whoa, dont worry! I Do NOT have an eating disorder or anything! I am 13 years old. I am very small! (:

I am four foot nine and weigh 70 pounds, which is the perfect weight for my small frame. (coming from my doctor)

I am one of those small chicks!! (:

I think you're describing something related to scoliosis called "lordosis". This is where the natural curve between the middle of your back and your rear is exagerated.

I googled "lordosis symptoms" and found http://www.cedars-sinai.edu/5725.html. This article seems to be exactly what you need.

Basically, if you're not in pain, you shouldn't worry about it. If you're having problems, a progression of treatment starts with pain meds and for major cases, ends up with surgery.

Take a look at the article, see if it answers your questions. If you need more help, please email me.  (+ info)

Is there anyone that used to be a cow mostly around the belly (pear shaped) and lost and in super shape now?

I'm a guy that has really low self-esteem, not many friends, and wants a buddy to email (NYC area preferably) who used to be a fat slob like me (54 inch gut/44 inch waist/5'7"/220 lbs-yuk) but is now in super shape and feels and looks fanstastic. I need support! If u can email me a practical diet that I can use no matter what - that would be great. I work a mid-shift (12 to 8) and it sucks - dinner always waits till I get home at like 10pm - only about 2 hrs before sleep! Help me please? I was a chubby teen (163 lbs, same height as now) - I took off 30 lbs in freshman year of college - kept off for like 5 years, then back to 160, then lost by jogging every day while in prison (again 30 lbs), then skyrocketed to 160, then 190, now 220 - in the course of 2 years. I have this swayback cuz my belly makes my whole mid-section pull forward, and it hurts my lower back when I take long walks. I walk like a fat person now like a penguin, I hate it cuz I totally got used to liking my body and now I can't get away with "it's just in my belly" anymore - it's in my legs, butt, chest, and neck and face now too! Help!

I know you know how unhealthy this is. Start by EATING SLOWLY. If you're eating with a fork, put the fork down between bites. The same with a sandwich. ENJOY EVERY BITE. Stop when you feel content. It takes 20 minutes to feel the fullness. You have to learn to eat to live, not to live to eat. Never mistake boredom or thirst for hunger! Drink lots of water. Cut out sugar, soda pop, fried food, fast food, and junk. Eat lean meat, skinless chicken, fish, fruits and veggies, whole grain cereals, bread, brown rice, and potatos with just a little margarine and pepper. If your blood pressure is high, try not to eat too much salt. Read the labels when you shop. Stay away from from words you can't pronounce! No hydrogenated oil ever. Try to shop a lot in Trader Joe's or any Health food store.
Walking and swimming are the best overall exercises. Swimming would be wonderful for you, but if you can't, walk as much as you can.
I want you to type in the white strip above: "How do I lose weight?" You'll get a lot of ideas that I didn't think of.
You know how fast time flies. Start this diet and exercise regime today, and in a year you'll be feeling and looking great!
Bless you and Good luck! :)  (+ info)
