What is the difference between the regular flu and the swine flu? And if someone has the swine , how long does it take to recover from it , esp if there are no vaccines available ? What should one do in that case? I have consulted a doctor and even he does not know what i should do, he himself said he had the swine already and has not fully recovered and i have had it now for three weeks . I have congestion so badly that sometimes i simply can not breathe properly.

I am a bit astounded that doctors in minor clinics in Nova Scotia can claim to have diagnosed swine flu in four high-school students. Are they using some form of test like the HIV western blot, or are they just looking at these people weezing and in light of the present hysteria, saying OH MY GOD! SWINE FLU!
Hey don't worry its just like the flu its not that bad my boss had it like three weeks ago and he recovered and my bro works at the hospital were they have 8 cases and only one person had to be hospitalized because that person was of old age, I really don't know why there dieing in Mexico maybe it isn't true. most Mexicans in Mexico are ignorant they use stupid Mexican remedies for the flu and i know I'm Mexican American with family down there and they don't know about Tylenol extra strength which lowers the deadly fever of a flu . may I add they do have really good doctors. all i know is im washing my hands cuz i dont want to miss 1 weeks worth of work or school! and if you do get it get rest go to your doctor and keep hydrated its just a flu the good part is that if you do get it you will be immune to bird flu and other crazy flus' worry if old  (+ info)

Why is swine flu so widespread in Canada, the US and the UK compared to mainland Europe?

There are so few cases in France, Germany and even Spain compared to the US, UK and Canada. Do mainland European countries have different definitions of when people have contracted swine flu? Or do they just have better healthcare/hygiene? It seems like English-speaking countries are the worst hit.
Well gee, maybe it's because it started in Mexico and Canada and the US are on the same continent as Mexico? As for other countries, maybe they just aren't as open about reporting the numbers as Canada, the US, and UK.

H1N1 isn't actually that big of a deal. The media blew it way out of proportion. Far more people die every year from regular, seasonal influenza.

45 people have died in Canada from H1N1. Anywhere between 4000-8000 Canadians die ANUALLY from the regular flu and its complications.

Worldwise just over 700 people have died from H1N1. Anywhere between 250,000-500,000 people worldwide die ANUALLY from the regular flu.  (+ info)

I have swine flu and have just finished a course of Tamiflu. How long before I start to feel better?

I have swine flu and have just finished a five-day course of Tamiflu antibiotics. Up to now, I haven't noticed any change in my condition. In fact, I'd say I feel worse than when I started taking the pills. Typically, how much time should pass before a person starts to feel better from taking Tamiflu?
If you have been feeling nauseous, have had diarrhoea or vomiting this is probably side effects from the Tamiflu (which is an antiviral not an antibiotic).

Also, if you didn't start taking the Tamiflu within 48 hours of the onset of your flu symptoms then it's possible you are still getting over it. Tamiflu can only reduce the duration of symptoms by an average of one day if taken within that time frame. You might feel washed-out for a couple of days afterwards anyway.

Another possibility is that you didn't have flu, so if your symptoms haven't changed at all since taking the Tamiflu then go back to your doctor.  (+ info)

People seem to be panicked about swine flu so I'd like to know the differences between swine flu and other types of flu. What makes it more dangerous?
from what i understand, the swine flu and the flu that we are used to are very very similar, so one is not technically more dangerous then another.
the difference is our body's response to swine flu vs the flues that our body's have been exposed to. each strain of flu virus, no matter how similar requires our body's to respond and recognzie it. Even if you have never actually gotten sick with the flu (and many people havent ever actually gotten true influenza) you, most likely have some type of immunity (recognition). This may be from birth and/or breast feeding(mother's immunity), a previous flue shot, contacting the virus in small amounts, etc.
Recognition of a virus (or bacteria) is the intent of vaccines, giving a small amount of weak virus/bacteria or toxins or other various live or dead components allows the body to recognize it and therefore form a response to it.
The problem with a 'new' virus is that our bodies have no clue how to respond to it or fight it off. If the first exposure is an 'infective dose', it can overwhelm the body very easily.
The spanish flu pandemic of 1918 killed over 50 MILLION worldwide..it was unrecognized and 'new'. Now, that same flu and its descendants are the common flu. about a hundered years ago the flue that we are less concerned about now was a death sentence.  (+ info)
