would the Latent Syphilis stage do damage?

I read early Latent syphilis stage is less than 2 years, and it says Latent Syphilis isnt dangerous really until you get to tertitary stage. Im getting tested in a few days but have possibly had syphilis for 1 year and 10 months, it was a lifetime movie that made me realize I could have it. So if im in Latent stage I shouldnt have organ damage yet right? Thanks
----------

you asked this question twice already, if you 're that worried go take a test---for ALL STD'S just to be safe!!! if you test positive for syphilis---and are in the latent stage---any decent doctor will give you proper cardiac examinations--and CT scans....

Latent stage: This stage is often called the hidden stage of syphilis because usually no symptoms are present. The latent stage is defined as the year after a person becomes infected. A person in early latent stage may be contagious. Many times, latent-stage syphilis is detected in a mother only after she gives birth to a child infected with syphilis (congenital syphilis).
Late (tertiary) stage: If syphilis is not detected and treated in the early stages, problems can develop because of damage caused by having the syphilis bacteria in the body for so many years. These may include heart disorders, mental disorders, blindness, other problems associated with the nervous system, and even death.  (+ info)

How is Latent TB different biologically from the active TB since they need different treatment?

I do understand what latent TB is but what I don't understand is why it needs different treatment than active TB. Why don't we use the same antibiotic treatment in latent and active TB since the antibiotics will kill the bacteria anyway?
Latent is formed when the bacteria enters the body but it is controlled by immune system. How immune system is able to control it but not eradicate it?
----------

TB can manifest in all kinds of ways but I think you are interested in the way TB can go dormant. The immune system fights the infection in the lungs and then surrounds the surviving bacteria with white blood cells. These cells form a ball around the clumps of bacteria and then are covered over by calcium leaving little calcium balls with TB centers in the upper lobes of the lungs. The TB organism is very slow growing and can stay alive an extremely long time. When something happens that causes one of the balls hanging in the lung to fall and break open, the bacteria are released and may manifest an infection again. This can happen years after the first infection. A chest X ray will either show these calcium balls (guma) or the places where they were because the lung tissue is destroyed in a ball pattern. When the inrfection is latent in the little balls it is much harder to destroy since it's walled off from the body. Hope this helps some!  (+ info)

Show one treat a latent tuberculosis during the pregnancy?

I made a PPD test and it gave a positive result. But I have no symptoms and feel myself well. So, I probably have a latent tuberculosis. I am on the eighth week of pregnancy. Should I treat this latent tuberculosis or it is better to do that after the delivery?

When someone contracts syphilis, how long do they have to receive treatment?

Meaning, once syphilis is contracted, how long do you have to get treatment before it kills you? Also, is it possible to receive treatment when symptoms and conditions are at their worse?
----------

yes you can get treatment anytime but why wait. It is a miserable debilitating death that can be easily eliminated. If you wait until the latent stages dementia is an inevitable part of that.  (+ info)

I say Syphilis was acquired by European settlers in the new world, am I correct?

I say Syphilis was acquired by European settlers in the new world from the natives and transferred back to Europe where it spread rapidly. My friend says Syphilis was known to Europeans since antiquity.
I say she's wrong and confusing Syph with Gonorrhea.
Who's correct?
----------

During the 16th century, it was called "great pox" in order to distinguish it from smallpox. In its early stages, the great pox produced a rash similar to smallpox (also known as variola). However, the name is misleading, as smallpox was a far more deadly disease.  (+ info)

Can a woman pass on syphilis to her newborn without passing it on to her mate?

She tested negative for any STD's and VD's during her testing cycle with her OB/GYN. But, back in May 07 when our newborn was born, Syphilis showed up in his system. She then told me that she had contracted it 7 years earlier but was treated and cured. If that's true, then why didn't she pass it on to me? We did not have sex between Feb 07 and May 07. Could it be possible or likely that she contracted it during that time period since we did not have sex with each other.
----------

if i am correct...syphillis is never really cured. it's treatable but not cure-able. so, maybe she just had a reoccurance of it.

i hope your boy is fine.  (+ info)

How long does it take for SYPHILIS to show up in a blood test?

After sex, how long should you wait until you get a syphilis test to make sure the virus has already shown up??
----------

Syphilis is caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum and is characterized by 3 sequential clinical, symptomatic stages separated by periods of asymptomatic latent infection. Common manifestations include genital ulcers, skin lesions, meningitis, aortic disease, and neurologic syndromes. Diagnosis is by serologic tests and adjunctive tests selected based on the disease stage. Penicillin is the drug of choice.
Venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test
A negative test is normal and means that no antibodies to syphilis have been detected. The screening test is most likely be positive in secondary and latent syphilis. During primary and tertiary syphilis this test may be falsely negative.
Rapid plasma reagin (RPR)- False-negatives may occur in persons with early- and late-stage syphilis. More testing may be needed before ruling out syphilis.
Fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) test- A positive FTA-ABS usually indicates infection with syphilis. This test result will remain positive for life even if syphilis has been adequately treated. Therefore, it cannot be used to monitor the treatment of syphilis.  (+ info)

What is the earliest age someone can get syphilis?

I am just curious. Does someone need to have gone through puberty in order to catch syphilis?
----------

It's possible of getting if from your mother during pregnancy if the syphilis was left untreated during that time.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is spread through direct contact with a resulting sore. These sores can be found around the genitals, anus and mouth. Similar to other STD’s such as Chlamydia, a person that has syphilis can not show any symptoms or the symptoms can go unrecognized. You can transmit this disease during stage 1 and stage 2 when the sores are present.  (+ info)
